May 27, 2020 Dear Class 2020 and Parents: I write to update you on your graduation celebration beginning at 4:00 pm on Friday, June 5. As much as we all want an in- person ceremony befitting of our seniors’ achievements and decades of Palma tradition, we are not permitted to host a gathering of any kind, even if we were to obey social distance norms as they are currently required. Thanks to help from friends of Palma, the attached logistics of a drive through event at Palma School were recently approved by the Monterey County Health Department. Please note in the attached: specifically assigned windows of time (20 minute segments) when families should be present to participate faculty and administration will be present, robed in gowns, with hoods and masks in the parking lot, only the graduate is permitted to 1) exit the vehicle to pick up his diploma, 2) to pause at the center of stage (he may remove his mask at this time) for a photo by a professional photographer, and 3) to pick up a keepsake gift bag before reentering his vehicle opportunity for families to shoot pictures at the baseball field with their graduate before, during and after the drive through Families may take photos from their vehicles. Masks must be worn at all times, except when shooting a photo. A virtual commencement ceremony with presentations for each graduate will be aired on Friday, June 5, ideally throughout the drive through event palmaschool.info/sr2020. A pre-recorded Baccalaureate Mass will also air online on Friday, June 5 at palmaschool.info/2020mass. The Mass is coordinated by the Campus Ministries of Palma and Notre Dame High Schools, celebrated by Bishop Ryan, with participation from select senior representative graduates, due to required norms. This is a unique ceremony, the first of its kind at Palma, and all of us are doing our very best to make it a memorable and meaningful one. While we regret that we are not permitted the large traditional gathering typical of our school’s legacy, we are excited to have this opportunity approved to celebrate our graduates and their achievements. We look forward to seeing you, but if for some reason your family cannot attend the drive-up ceremony on June 5, please let us know. Gratefully yours, Mr. David Sullivan Principal
