STATUS OF SARUS CRANE IN MADHYA PRADESH:

FOURTH & FIFTH SURVEYS

A two Member Team from ENDEV comprising Dr. Sucitra Ghosh and Mr. NN

Chaterjee, undertook the fourth survey to determine the status of Sarus Crane in

Madhya Pradesh from 7th August, 2014 to 9th September, 2014. During the month long

survey special focus was given to the 23 targeted districts besides other districts in the

state of Madhya Pradesh. Wetlands and agricultural fields being preferred habitat, such

areas were more intensively surveyed. A total of 80 birds were seen by the team and 54

birds were reported by the local community.

The fifth survey was undertaken from November 28, 2014 to December 24, 2014.

During the survey, a total of 57 adults and 08 juveniles were spotted by the team;

reports from the local community showed presence of 08 Sarus Cranes in the area.

NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT AWARENESS CAMPAIGN (NEAC):

PROJECT

ENDEV has been awarded a NEAC Project on the theme “Combating Desertification, Land

Degradation and Drought” for the year 2014-2015. The project entitled “Reclamation and

Reuse of Degraded Coastal Land” would involve a Stakeholder Workshop which would be

carried out in Tazpur, Ramnagar Block of Purba (East) Medinipur, besides publishing

resource material.

FELICITATION OF PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS: PROJECT ON

“ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE FOR FOOD SECURITY

IN THE INDIAN SUNDARBANS DELTA”

On 19th September, 2014, ENDEV felicitated its partner organizations for their

participation and contribution in the success of the project on “Adaptation to Climate

Change for Food Security in the Indian Sundarbans”, for which it was also awarded the

‘Judge’s Award’ by the Nature Conservancy in 2013 and also the 5th Earth Care Award of

the JSW-ToI-CEE in 2014. The Partners included Tagore Society for Rural Development

(TSRD) in Gosaba block, Joygopalpur Youth Development Centre (JYDC) in Sandeshkhali I

& II blocks, Lutheran World Service India Trust (LWSIT) in Mathurapur I & II blocks

WWF-I in Namkhana block and Paschim Sridharkathi Jankalyan Samiti (PSJKS) in

Hingalgunj block. The event took place in Dhamkhali, South 24 Parganas, Indian

Sundarbans. The programme was attended by Dr. A.K.Ghosh, President ENDEV, Dr.

Swapan K. Sarkar, Vice President ENDEV and Members- Ms. Sunita Dey, Ms. Clare Lizamit

Samling, Ms. Jennifer Alam, Ms. Sukanya Bannerjee, Ms. Farah Naz from ENDEV and also

representatives from the partner organizations. (See photographs below)

attended the Deltas, vulnerability and Climate Change: Migration & Adaptation

(DECCMA) India Partner’s Meet at Barkul, Odisha during October 29-31st, 2014

Dr. Ghosh also acted as a Resource Person in the Training Program on Human

Rights at St. Xavier’s College on November 1, 2014

President was invited as Chief Resource Person to speak on the theme of Climate

Change Adaptation & Mitigation organized by Asian Zone Emergency and

Environment Cooperation Network (AZEECON) hosted by Lutheran World Service

India Trust (LWSIT) from November 18-21st, 2014 at Puri, Odisha.

Dr Ghosh was invited for the National Consultation on E-Flow by IUCN at Jadavpur

University on November 22, 2014

He was invited to chair a session on Sustainable Solution for access to safe water at

TERI/IISWBM on December 18, 2014 and also delivered lecture on “Transboundary

share of water”

He was invited as the Guest Speaker on the theme of Climate Change Impacts; What

we can do?, at the University of Kalyani on December 12, 2014. The meeting was

chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Hangloo and was followed by screening of “An

Inconvenient Truth”.

Members of Inner Wheel of Rotary Club, Kolkata through initiative of ENDEV

donated 25 beds, mattresses, mosquito curtains and other accessories and 25 chairs

and 25 reading tables for the orphanage currently being set up by our partner

organization, JYDC at Sandeshkhali in Indian Sundarbans Delta.

Ms. Sreemanti Dutta Gupta, Member-ENDEV, also rececived first class M.Tech degree in Biotechnology from Jadavpur University.

Ms. Jennifer Alam, Ms. Sukanya Bannerjee and Ms. Farah Naz, all members of

ENDEV, received First Class M.A degrees in Human Rights from University of

Calcutta.

ENDEV providing drinking water in the arsenic affected area of Boral, South 24

Parganas by mobilizing peoples’ participation for Rainwater Harvesting in re-

excavated ponds by chlorination, protecting the pond area with four feet wall,

testing water quality for portability with local collaborating NGO- Economic Rural

Development Society. The system was used by the community for five years till

piped water was made available by PHED. (1999)

On being invited by West Bengal Renewable Energy Agency (WBREDA), to solve a

problem of supplying wood based biomass, for installing a 500 KW Gasifier power

plant to supply electricity in the island of Chhotomollakhali, Indian Sundarbans

Delta, ENDEV planned and executed setting up of a Energy Forest with peoples’

participation and successfully created a plantation of 40,000 trees, spread over five

land parcel covering 25 ha. This is the first of its kind in India and it was recognized

by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India. (1999-2001)

Preparation of the first People’s Biodiversity Register in the state of West Bengal in

10 villages- 05 in Nadia district and 05 in South 24 Parganas district, with

participation of 200 students- 100 girls and 100 boys and 20 teachers. The project

was highly appreciated by UNDP-GEF, the funding agency. Two permanent

Biodiversity Resource have also been set up, one in Ushagram Trust-Nadia district

and the other in Asurali Gram Unnayan Parishad-South 24 Parganas district.

(2000-2002)

In order to revive traditional Indian medical health-care system, ENDEV on the

basis of a household survey identified the most common diseases in the island of

Chhottomollakhali, inhabited by 30,000 people. It had only one Primary Health

Centre with one qualified medical practioner. On a leasehold land in the village,

ENDEV team set up a medicinal plant nursery and a herbal garden, organized a 100

member womens’ group and established Acharya Jagadish Bose Medicinal Plant

Research Centre and also published a handbook on the usage of the same. (2003)

ENDEV was invited to be the State Coordinator for 11 non-coastal and hill districts

of West Bengal to take the all India programme in the Year of Scientific Awareness,

2004, a total of 550 programmes were carried out on the themes of Environment

and Biodiversity, Soil Conservation, Health and Nutrition, Disaster Management and

Rainwater Harvesting and Use of Information Technology in daily life. The

programme was supported by Department of Science and Technology, Government

of India. (2004)

ENDEV was selected as one of the 20 organizations out of 2500 by The World Bank

in 2007, under a programme called India Development Market Place-07, for its

most innovative project on promoting Soil nutrition, Food productivity and

Conservation of aquatic biodiversity in a Project entitled “Surviving Man and

Nature in Indian Sundarbans”. The programme was carried out in the Bali Island in

collaboration with Bali Nature and Wildlife Society. Out of four Indigenous Rice

varieties introduced by ENDEV, at least one variety is being extensively cultivated

by more than 5000 farmers across the Indian Sundarbans Delta. (2007)

ENDEV was selected by DFID-Government of UK, for promoting a programme on

Biodiversity and Livelihood in one of the most backward districts of India viz.,

Purulia. With local community participation, a Peoples’ Biodiversity Register was

prepared for the Bagmundi area and a Farmers’ Seed Bank was set up at the Mandra

Lions Club. The District Magistrate of Purulia organized a meeting with the BDOs of

all 20 Blocks, wherein representative of the State Biodiversity Board and President-

ENDEV, Dr. Asish Ghosh had urged the local community to form Biodiversity

Management Committee in each Block to ensure the mechanism of Benefit Sharing

for any commercial utilization of bio-resources from that area. (2009)

In 2010, ENDEV with the help of National Council of Rural Institutes, Government

of India initiated a project on “Sustainable Agriculture through Microplanning”;

five Salt Tolerant Rice Varieties were re-introduced in 07 Blocks of the Indian

Sundarbans Delta and with participation of five CBOs in Sandeshkhali Block I & II

(JYDC), Mathurapur Block I and II (LWSIT), Gosaba Block (TSRD), Hingalgunj Block

(PSJKS) and Namkhana Block (WWF-I). With farmers’ participation by using 10 Kgs

of seeds of five salt tolerant varieties, the project succeeded in achieving production

of 2000 Kgs of seeds. In all the blocks, Farmers’ Seed Banks have been established.

This work received the ‘Judge’s Award’ out of 37 countries from Washington based

‘The Nature Conservancy’ in October, 2013 and subsequently the 5th Earth Care

Award, along with its partner from JSW-ToI-CEE in April, 2014.

In the Urban sector, ENDEV was entrusted by the Commissioner, Kolkata Municipal

Corporation to prepare the first ever Report on “Parks, Gardens & Open Spaces in

KMC Ward 1-141” in the year 2001.

Subsequently, ENDEV was assigned to prepare a Report on Wetlands in added areas

of Kolkata Ward no.101-141 by Commissioner, Kolkata Municipal Corporation in

the years 2003 & 2005, in two volumes.

The first Peoples Biodiversity Register (PBR) for the city of Kolkata was prepared

under the aegis of ENDEV with participation of hundred students from five colleges

and two universities, being supported by West Bengal Biodiversity Board, in the year

2012.

2014. for interviewing President-ENDEV, for news coverage on success of salt

tolerant rice varieties for an US online journal Ensia.

Ms. Marianne Landzettel, Former Correspondent BBC, and Dr. Martin Kunz from

London, UK, accompanied President-ENDEV to Sandeshkhali on 30th December,

2014 to cover the story on the “Adaptation to Climate Change by Salt Tolerant Rice

Varieties in the Indian Sundarbans Delta”.

Ms. Lindsey Fransen and Mr. David Kroodsman, from San Francisco, California

visited ENDEV in their journey across the countries of Asia under the project ‘Ride

for Climate Asia’ and interviewed Dr. A.K.Ghosh, President-ENDEV on Sundarbans

and Climate Change and Kolkata and Climate Change on 31st December, 2014.

They also interacted with the research scholars, Ms. Sunita Dey and Ms. Clare

Lizamit Samling.

ENDEV IN THE MEDIA

ENDEV led the initiative in the preparation of Peoples’ Biodiversity Register

involving 100 students, teachers and researchers and although the Report was

completed on time, in 2012 and it was officially released by Honob’le Minister of

Education-West Bengal, till date no Biodiversity Management Committee has been

formed for the city of Kolkata. This was pointed out in a new item in ‘Ey Somoy’, on

11th August, 2014.

The impact of conversion of water body on the Migratory Birds was also flashed

through a news item in Bengali daily ‘Ey Somoy’ based on ENDEV’s study on 18th

August, 2014.

In a separate media coverage dated 20th August, 2014, in the Bengali daily ‘Ey

Somoy’ , 60 species of vanishing trees from Kolkata were reported based on

ENDEV’s study. The same news item was also published in the Times of India on

August 21st, 2014.

Times of India published a news item on more than 100 vanishing birds from East

Kolkata Wetlands, on the basis of a study carried out by CED- Sister Organization of

ENDEV on August 25th, 2014. .

The Times of India, Kolkata published a new item on the large scale tree felling in

the Basanti Highway on 28th December, 2014, being alerted by ENDEV team.

India TV, New Delhi interviewed President-ENDEV, on the incidence of White Tiger

killing a visitor in New Delhi Zoo and what precaution should be taken for better

zoo management on 24th September, 2014.

Akash 8 also interviewed President-ENDEV, on the issue of disappearing winter

birds from Kolkata Zoo and the programme was broadcasted on 26th December,

2014.

2. Welcome Address

The meeting started with an inaugural address by Dr.A.K.Ghosh, President, ENDEV, who

welcomed all the members to the 17th

AGM on 9th

August, 2014.

3. Secretary Report

The Secretary, Mr. Sujan Pandit, read last years’ Minutes of the Meeting, followed by the

Annual Report of the current year and elaborated all the activities carried out by ENDEV in

the present year.

ENDEV won the ‘Judges Choice Award’ from the Nature Conservancy, USA and

RARE on the theme of ‘Adapting to a Changing Climate’, in October, 2013.

The Society also won the ‘JSW-Earth Care Awards’, jointly with LWSIT in the

community category for the success of its project on ‘Adapting to Climate Change

with Salt Tolerant Rice Varieties’, in February, 2014.

ENDEV moves to East Medinipur to assist coastal farmers for food security.

ENDEV also played an active role in preserving Dankuni Wetlands.

Field Survey for the project on Tribal Rights and Impact of Panan HEP and Teests IV

Hydel Power Projects in Sikkim has been completed and the findings of the project

were also presented by the President, to the members of the NHRC on 24th

April,

2014.

First, Second and Third Survey Reports have been submitted to the MPBB and the

findings were also presented before the Research Committee of MPBB on 25th

April,

2014 by the President.

The Status of Environment: Second Citizen’s Report, 2013 was given to the

speakers in a Conference organized by BESU.

Ms. Rosamarie Hille, German Consul, visited ENDEV’s Centre and interacted

with the members there.

The Society has now started its affiliation with St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata and

TISS, Hyderabad.

Paribesh Unnayan Parishad has also joined the network to extend the work on Salt

Variety to Sagar Islands in Indian Sundarbans Delta.

There were also some suggestions made by the President:

Felicitation of Partner Organizations, who assisted in the project on ‘Adaptation to

Climate Change’.

Monthly meetings to be held to discuss on the activities which each of the members

are engaged in.

6. Resolution

The felicitation programme of the partner organizations would be held on 19th

September, 2014 at Dhamakhali, Sundarbans.

It was decided that the said meetings should be on every second month between

4:30 pm- 5:30 pm.

Creation of an updated website.

Digitization of the Library.

The meeting was concluded by a vote of thanks given by the President.
