Theworkshopstartedonthe19thof Februaryandisintendedtoberepeatedeverythreemonthsinordertocontinuouslyimprovethestaff ’scustomerserviceskills.

Thetrainingprogramwasorganizedbytheassistantmanagercustomerservices&frontdesk,YasserTarabay;withthemaintrainers;seniorsupervisorsIyadIsmailandHabibTarekseniorsupervisor.

Regardingthebenefitsof suchinvestment,Mr.YasserTarabaystatedthat“Itiscommonlyobservedandacceptedthatemployeesworkbetterwhenmanagementprovidestheirneeds.Employeetrainingisonesuchneed.Thoseworkersthatqualifyfortrainingprogramsbecomebetterequippedtodotheirjobsinamannerthatbenefitscustomers,andinturnthecompanyitself.

Theeventwasbasicallyintendedtoeducateandtrainmedicalstudents-class2011/2012”-onfirstaidstechniquesincludingwounds’treatmentwiththemostminimalequipmentavailableandinthefastestpossiblemeans.Thetrainingwasperformedbyspecializedprofessionalsenablingthestudentstoholdacertificatethatentitlesthemtopracticevolunteerworkandtreatthewoundedinthefuture.

Uponarrival,Iveryquicklyrealizedthatthiswouldbenoholiday,asIwasalmostimmediatelyaskedtoseesomeof thestaff whoworkedontheshipwhohaddentalissues,astheyhadbeenwaitingformyarrivalanxiouslytoseeif Icouldhelptreatthem.Whatthenfollowedwasaverybusyscheduleof workfortherestof theweekfrom9amtillabout6pmdailycontinuoustreatments,withonlyanhourforlunch.Whatsurprisedmewastheamountof patientsthatwouldstartqueuingoutsidetheshipfrom5aminthemorning,inorderforthemtobeseenbymefortreatment.Iwouldseeonaverage30-40patientsperdayandwiththe

17helpof mynursewhodidallthetranslatingforme,wemanagedtogetthroughthetoughfirstweek.Mydentalclinicconsistedof averyoldandbasicdentalchairandequipment-butatleastitallworkedandwasgoodenoughtocarryoutmytreatments!Theshipwascomfortablebutverybasic,thesleepingquarterswerecleanandthefoodwasfreshlycookedeverydayandservedtousatthecaptain’stablewherehewouldjoinusformeals(CaptainQudus).Thepatientswereverypooranduneducatedpeoplefromtheslumsof thecity,oftencomingtomebarefootandwithnobasicidea’sof whatisneededtokeepyourmouthhealthy-e.g.dailybrushingandnoteatinglotsof sugaryfood(basicknowledgethatwetakeforgrantedintheWest).

DuringmyfirstweekIhadafewafternoonswhereIwasescortedbythestaff thatworkedontheshipandallowedtowanderaroundthestreetsandslumsneartheship.ThesewerequitedangerousareasandhenceIwasnotallowedtowalkalonehere,anddefinitelynotafterdark!

Manyof thelocalslookedatmeandstaredheavilyasIstuckoutlikeasorethumbwithmyWesternstyleclothesandlooks.Theinnercityslumswereverydirtyandpollutedwithnocleandrinkingwatersuppliesorproperhygienicsewagedisposal.Itwasovercrowdedandsmellywith

oftenanentirefamilylivinginnomorethanoneroomof space.IwasluckytoseethemanygarmentfactoriesthatlinedtheriverfrontasBangladeshisoneof theworld’smostfamousgarmentproducers,manufacturingclothesforthelikesof multinationalcompaniessuchasNext,GapandZara.Dhakawasastrangemixof eitherextremelyrichpeoplewithlavishlifestylesandimmensewealthorthecompleteoppositewithpovertywaybelowtheredline-peoplewholiterallyhadnothingandwerepreparedtostealandloottofeedthemselvesandtheirfamilies.Iwouldsaythesplitwasabout98%verypoorandonly2%veryrich.

Eventhoughmyworkschedulewasexhaustingwithnoorminimalbreaks,deepinsideIfeltafeelingof prideandachievementthatIcouldhelpbringasmiletothefacesof thesepeopleandgetthemoutof painandtreatthem.Onboardtheship,thereweremanytimeswherethebackupgeneratorfailedandwascutoff,hencenofanswouldworkandnowaterwaspumpedthroughthepipesmakingitveryhotanduncomfortable,butthiswasallpartof theexperience!

MysecondweekwasplannedsothatIcouldtravelwiththeorganization’sstaff andwithotherdoctorsfromtheUSAtocontinuemycharityworkdeepintheruralregionsespeciallyintheRiverineislands(orcharsastheycallthem)andtheriverbanksof northernBangladesh.Bangladeshisthelargestdeltaicplainwithhundredsof riversveiningthroughit.Itsuffersfromannualfloodingduringmonsoonseasonmanyareasareonlyaccessiblebyboats.Wedroveovernightforabout9hoursupnorthonasmallminibusalongwithothermedicalcolleaguesandstaff fromthecharity,toanareaupnorthcalledGaibandha.

Asmysecondweekof hardworkfinished,Ihadadaptedtomynewsurroundingsandenvironmentanditwasasif Ihadneverlivedinthewest.AndasIfinallyleftBangladeshIhadahugesmileonmyfaceandafeelingthatthiswon’tbemylastvisittoBangladesh.Ihadfalleninlovewiththecultureandpeopleof thismagicalland,anabsoluteadventureandanexperienceof alifetime!
