In August 2015, SFC received a $986,000 Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant to implement a large-scale audiovisual preservation and access program
~5,000 files already streaming online~200 audio files per sprint (2 weeks)~3500 video files in 3 yearsTotal = 15,700 files in 3 years
= 20,700 item-level records in finding aids
That’s a lot of scrolling…
Gaining Perspective
November 2014 – Humanities Advisory Committee Faculty members and independent scholars from UNC-Chapel Hill,
Emory University, UC-Santa Barbara, and the Alan Lomax Archive
Take away = Support opportunities that build the scholarly audience through faculty/student research funding while alsosoliciting feedback on our discovery and delivery approaches.
SFC Research Fellowship Program 2016 – Gladys Delmas Foundation
Travel funds of up to $1,500 per fellow, for three artists, graduate students, or scholars who plan to make use of the SFC for a major project.
Projects may include dissertations, theses, articles, monographs, composition, artistic work, and performance
2016 – 2018 Andrew W. Mellon Foundation $2500 to support travel and lodging for a one-week residency in Chapel Hill.
Scholar will work with the curator to define a universe of materials that would be most useful for the Fellow’s research.
The SFC will allocate studio time or funds for outsourcing to fulfill requests for digitization and online access of audiovisual materials
Scholar will play a role in communicating if/where we fall short in providing them with the tools to effectively conduct research on our collections
Other Opportunities
Partner with local radio news producer to develop series revolving around particular themes or aspects of southern music Researched and hosted by local folklorists Using SFC archival recordings culled through consultation with the
curator
