Clients requesting fewer operating system releases; and longer support cycles– Major release upgrades can be disruptive for a business

Interim technology refreshes will provide new functions and I/O support – Simpler to install on a current release and less disruptive

2012 does not have a major release, because key capabilities have been delivered using Technology Refreshes and similar functional updates

Improve Integrity

Eradicate any altered programs that already exist

Extend unique ability to remove any future code corruption– Any runnable MI application, without program

source– No ongoing updates needed

Prevent load of non-i5/OS "system state" program– Make system more robust

Page 20: Moving 5.4 to 7.1 AB

IBM Power Systems

Improve Performance

• Faster activation, procedure calls, pointer use• More efficient memory handling

– Use more hardware facilities– Remove software teraspace limit emulation

• Generate processor-specific code– Can “opt out” of adaptive code generation

(ACG) if desired• New create options, no source changes required:

– Optimize procedure call argument passing, between modules (up to +20%)

– Defer service program activation (can significantly improve application startup)

© 2012 IBM Corporation40

IBM Power Systems

Improve Functionality

• Theme: ease application development, deployment• Teraspace:

– ALL programs now enabled– 100x larger

• Add thread local static storage– Ease thread-safe programming

• RPG H spec ‘THREAD(*CONCURRENT)’• Individual variable declaration qualifiers:

RPG: ‘static(*allthread)’• C++,C: ‘__thread’

• Improved coverage: Performance EXplorer, trace – No need to recompile first with different options

IBM i Program Conversion Program conversion will be required to run with IBM i 6.1 or IBM i 7.1 – Program conversion automatically upgrades software to exploit latest

system enhancements– Not required for POWER6, which can run IBM i 5.4– Required for POWER7, can run on IBM i 6.1 or IBM i 7.1 Conversion requires program's creation data (observability) – Note that all programs created for V5R1 or later releases have had their

creation data automatically saved during program creationTool available now to analyze program conversion for i5/OS V5R3 & V5R4 – Identifies potential issues, if any, and estimates

conversion timeProgram conversion is performed during install/restore of applications, at first use or at scheduled time

Many ISVs have gone through the conversion process already– Feedback is positive

145 ISVs participated in the beta program– 831 applications listed for i 6.1 in the Global Solutions Directory as of July 23,

2009– 2,182 applications listed for IBM i 6.1 in the Global Solutions Directory as of

April 29, 2010 – 108 applications listed for IBM i 7.1 in the Global Solutions Directory as of April

Objects that Cannot Convert? What next? Analyze Objects reveals some programs with no observability and source cannot be found? 1. determine which program objects are part of vendor packages which can be

replaced by newer versions2. determine which program objects need to be replaced

• Examine "last used date" in object itself *** If suspect vendor packages are not being used, run the "last used"

inquiry before deciding to update vendor packages3. from remaining objects, determine which ones have source

• inside each source member, the "last changed date" is stored• Similar information is stored in the object itself • Run a "match" program for "source code name, type, source file, and last

changed date" with the program object "source file, source member, type and last changed date"

• Matches mean 95% certainty that source and object match4. find a code de-construction product

• Often costly; may be unpredictable

PowerVM is tied to the hardware and stays at the donor system.

Operating system licenses are tied to the hardware and are staying with the donor system.

PowerVM and operating system licenses must be ordered for the new system.

With the new configuration there is an initial order of the SWMA for the operating system.

Additional Software can be transferred within an enterprise.

Transfer has to be done through the ESS Webportal.

Several additional Software products are having an own SWMA (eg. DB2 WebQuery, …).

For these products ensure that SWMA is moved to the new system.

What is the IBM Pre-Upgrade Verification Tool?

• ‘As-is’ tool developed by IBM to help ensure a successful IBM i (i5/OS) upgrade

– Tool checks to see if key required pre-upgrade steps have been successfully completed

• If not, the steps that were missed or completed incorrectly are flagged

• YOU then have the opportunity to successfully complete the missing/incorrect steps

Important – the tool itself does not automatically perform any corrective actions/missed steps

• Useful to ‘anyone preparing for an upgrade’– Source: OS/400 V5R2M0 and above– Target : up to IBM i 7.1

Pre-Upgrade Verification Tool (PRUV) verifies:

Prepare for Install steps– Prerequisite PTFs applied – Acceptance of Software Agreements– Allocation of additional LIC space– System values– ANZOBJCVN PTFs applied ( IBM i 6.1)– etc.

Checks for other items that may prevent a successful upgrade– Damaged system profiles– Duplicate/extension files in system libraries– etc.

Optionally performs other steps, including checking for the existence of useful items prior to the upgrade including

– Performance data– BRMS recovery report– etc.
