Conventions of movie

posters

The biggest convention with Movie poster is that they always have an image of the main character or characters on in. can be anywhere from a medium long shot to a

close up, the most common seem to be medium long shot or medium shot. They seem not to follow the rule of thirds with movie poster had have the main subject in the

centre third.

Another convention I analysed is that the title of the movie always comes at the bottom of the poster as it makes people look at the whole poster before seeing the title as read thing from top left to bottom right. The title is also always the biggest pieces of text on the poster so the audience eye is drawn to it, either making them

what to see it or do some research about what the film is about.

A convention between some movie poster is that some have a sell line in them, this is too big up the movie to the audience and drawn them in.

It is also important that the poster has the right colours on it as it informs the viewer before the film released or they have seen it what the atmosphere of the movie is

going to be as bright colour suggest happy tone or comedy were as dark colour suggest dark tone, tragedy.

If the movie is directed by a world famous director like Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg or J.J. Abram then the poster might have the director name above the title

again this is meant to draw an audience in as it will draw fans of the director or people who believe the film is going to be good as the director has a good reputation.

Also some poster like the Avenger poster on the right have some of the actors who star in the movie again to draw fans of the actors to the movie. Also if the actor has won or been nominated for an academy award they sometimes have this above their name to show the audience the quality of actors in the film, suggesting to them the film is good

to be good. The names are normal located at the top of the poster or just above the title.

It is important to not over load the poster with information, just the key detail to inform the audience but still leaving them wanting more. This either makes them

research the movie or want to go and see it.

The whole purpose of a movie poster is to draw the audience in so more people will see the movie and the film companies will get more profits to spend on other films.

Synergy Between film and

poster

(Left) The Mad Max poster is very manic and confusing as they seem to have put an image upside down above his head. This

links in nicely with the nature of the movie which is all crazy and mad as people are going insane trying to live in the wastelands. It

as fits in with the sell tags which say “Only the Mad survive”. They have also highlighted the work “Mad” to show it has special

place in the movie and after seeing the movie there is a lot of madness within the movie. They have also only put the main character on the poster to show the audience clearly which

character the story with revolve around, also he is holding a shot gun in one of his hands telling us that this character is a killer but also that he might be in danger. Within the film he does indeed

kill but only because he has to protect himself as he is in danger. You can partially see two car on the poster showing other

elements that will appear in the film and as the man character is holding one showing that cars will play a key element to his story.
