A Company with Principles…

At Meindl we are motivated by our tradition. In its 11th generation this family business draws its innovation and drive from its tradi-tion. It’s based on values such as ecological conservation, con-nection to our home and respect for our employees. And there is always just one over riding goal: Quality.

combination, the valuable experience of long-time employees, the constant striving for optimization of our products that makes them distinctive and gives the customer a very good feeling. Of course the vitality and activity of the company requires investment: consequently last year about a million Euros were invested in the production.

There is a reason that Meindl boots are of the high-est German quality. The secret is the employees’ hands - depending on the model from punching to packing the process can take up to 150 to 200 separate working steps - or perhaps better, “manipulations by hand”. Their claim is durability, safety, reliability, excellent quality plus a discernible attention to detail. National and international prizes for many Meindl models demonstrate the high quality standard that will continue to be the real Meindl.trademark.

For the Meindl history please refer towww.meindl.de

Those who have been in the business of making boots for 300 years, know that quality is always critical. It ultimately ensures success through customer satisfaction. What began as a one-man shoemaking operation, today is a company produ-cing more than a million pairs of boots and shoes each year. Year after year more than 300 models are brought to market with over 50 percent expor-ted. Although Meindl is at home around the world, we have never lost touch with our roots – they are in Kirchanschöring, near the Waginger See, with a view of the Berchtesgaden and Chiemgau Alps. Meindl has always been here, and year after year has set the pace for “controlled growth”. That’s how the company has grown; that’s how the com-pany has attained longevity. Today there are about 250 employees at the head office, some of them have been working with us for 30 or 40 years, sometimes across more than one generation. Naturally this contributes to the vigor characteri-zing the German location and something to which Meindl has always been committed.

Authentic, traditional and yet unbelievably innovati-ve - for Meindl, these things are not mutually exclu-sive. To the contrary, it is exactly this dependable

We are glad you’re reading our new Movements

2010. Because we at Meindl want you to expe-

rience nature, mountain- or hiking trips at their

best, it is once again full of product innovations

and inspirations for you. We design Meindl boots

with attention to the best technology, comfort

and design.

As a company with tradition focusing on conti-

nuous innovation, we continue developing and

improving our models year after year to ensure

that you’ll always have the right boot for any trip –

because we have always believed that for hiking,

mountain and trekking only the best quality is

good enough. For you that means superior boots

you can rely on.

Our numerous awards speak for themselves,

for example the Editor´s Choice Award 2010 for

the Meindl Island MFS Active. This is one of the

most prestigious and coveted awards in the out-

doors industry. Every product undergoes hard

testing in practical and laboratory tests allowing

for standardization and reproducibility of quality

comparisons across the years. On one hand

we are very proud of our many awards, and at

the same time driven onwards to maintaining or

exceeding this high level of quality.

In this context we maintain a close and conti-

nuous information exchange with climbers and

outdoor professionals all over the world. On

behalf of all of them, in this issue we introduce

the nature filmmaker Andreas Kieling, who has

worn his Meindl boots in Africa, Australia and

Alaska, in the most severe heat and freezing

cold. All alone on a 1400 km hike along the

former border dividing West and East Germany.

Andreas Kieling has worn Meindl for over 10

years. That makes us very happy, and we would

appreciate it if you would also wear our boots –

wherever you would like to go.

We make boots and shoes for you.

Enjoy every step!

Lars and Lukas Meindl

Let´s go!

Surviving witness of quality made by our grandfather. If boots could talk, there would be a lot we could learn from them. This model, made by our grandfather Lukas Meindl, was kindly bequeathed to us by the wearer helping this “old Meindl to find its way home again.” Its appearan-ce tells us a lot about this boot – above all about its life and particularly its “activities”. The quality and reliability of our boots are of particular interest to us here at Meindl. That’s why this witness from approximately 1920 is as important as it is amazing, and that’s the reason we’ve given it a special place in our head office.

The tour begins here…

There is always a bit of prideAlois Jauk, shoe technician and production manager

“I have been with Meindl for 15 years and am responsible for the entire production. It was the careful, conscientious handing of the materials, and the “shoemaker mentality” that I appreciated about Meindl right from the start. The traditional handwork, in combination with constant innova-tion - which Meindl constantly brings to market naturally has a direct impact on fit and use. Today we know that every customer is most of all looking for individuality. Their boots should be a perfect fit for their chosen activity. That is his/her requirement and also ours, of course. That is the reason for the sheer size of the Meindl collection. The quality of workmanship also plays a large role at every step of the process, right up to packing and shipping. Prior to being introduced to the market place Meindl boots receive pro-fessional care. And quite honestly, I am proud every single time when I see a perfect pair go into the shoebox, and then I think about what the new wearer will experience while wearing them.”

It takes more than 200 working steps, an exacting eye and years of expe-rience in our production facility at Kirchanschöring before a Meindl boot is truly finished. The best leather, perfect raw and finished materials, precise cutting, a sharp eye for detail, masterful handcrafting and optimal operation of the machines, “made by Meindl” has meant and will always be something special. That is our and each and every Meindl employee’s mission. All of us are convinced that we owe it to our tradition and to our customers.

Successful Climate Research.

More ventilation, more pump effect

Pushing-off phase: warm air will be squeezed from the boot Stepping phase: fresh air drawn into the boot

More than just a sock. With its carefully coordinated air passages, tubes and padding the Air Revolution® Sock from Meindl perfectly supports the climate function. Of course, this must include the perfect fit that is crucial for hiking of any kind.

❚ balanced temperature environment

❚ waterproof and breathable

❚ slip- and wear resistant Meindl-Multigriff®-Soles with Vibram®

❚ superb wear and climatic comfort

❚ low weight and good support

Wherever you go, breathing correctly is impor-

tant. With the objective to ensure the optimum

climate inside the boot, we have applied this

principle to our boots, as well. Consequently

we developed Air Revolution®, a never-before-

seen unique and superb* “air conditioning in

the boot”. With every step air is pumped out of

the boot, and at every step it draws in fresh air.

While it sounds so natural, it is based on an intel-

ligent mix of materials: A 3D mesh tongue and a

permanently cushioning perforated sponge pro-

vide the decisive pumping effect and ventilation.

Quite simply, step by step.

* Air Revolution® was developed by Meindl in 2000, and consi-stently was awarded a prize for its trailblazing technology.

Air Revolution models are available for ladies and gentlemen in sixteen different versions ranging from usage A to D. All models are pictured at www.meindl.de

6 | interview – andreas Kieling

movement:Andreas, you are really one of the most intense Meindl-wearers we know. How long are you on the road on average for a project?

A.K.:I need about a year and a half to make a one-hour documentary. To do the diving grizzly it took me two months alone just to get him to tolerate my being near him. In the finished film the story is told in just over two and a half minutes. My approach to animals is the same anywhere in the world: I try to get the animal used to my presence. Often this takes longer than the actual shooting. I’m not one of those patient filmmakers, hiding for weeks in one place.

movement:Wet, cold, endless paths with heavy equipment on snow and ice. We know you are well-trained. But how do our boots hold up?

He is the world’s first person to have filmed a diving

Grizzly Bear - from up close. His passion is filming

animals and nature. He has worked for National

Geographic for sixteen years, the ZDF (Wonderful

World) and ARD (Expeditions into the Animal

Kingdom). Thuringia´s Andreas Kieling sets out

again and again to bring the world of animals into

our homes. In his very own special way!

On the trail and lying in wait.

A.K.:Under extreme climatic conditions, men and equip-ment are often stretched to the limit. The best is often just good enough. That’s why I took the North Cape Pro GTX, with genuine sheepskin to Alaska.

movement:For your latest book, “My Expedition to the Last of Their Kind”, you clearly exposed yourself to some dangers – isn’t that sometimes risky work?

A.K.:Absolutely, but when in the field I always try to weigh possible dangers, and in advance to prepare escape routes for the worst case scenarios. For that secure footing and a good sole are imperative.

movement:You’re now in the process of preparing a 3000 kilo-meter trek through southern Africa...

A.K.:I’ll be taking Meindl shoes and sandals with me. Cleo, my faithful female companion, will also be along. It is impossible to escape Africa’s magic. The unbelievable diversity of species, incredible sceneries and intere-sting people – I can hardly wait to get going.

movement:Bon voyage!

2008

ABC of Cleaning❚ The footbed should be removed and dried in the open air.

❚ The footbed may be washed at up to 30° C.

❚ Remove the laces in order to make it easier to wash and care for the tongue area.

❚ The heaviest dirt should be brushed off under running water, remove dirt and stones from the sole.

❚ DO NOT clean your boots in a washing machine.

❚ You may clean the inside of your boots with lukewarm water or Meindl Cleaner In & Out, and rinse well. When cleaning GORE-TEX®-lined boots, use water only! The boots leather lining can be re-conditioned with skincare cream.

❚ Never dry your boots in direct sunlight or on a radiator. Wet leather will become brittle, hard and crack.

❚ If the inside is wet, simply stuff it with crumpled newspaper and change it occasionally. Maintain the shape of shoes with wood shoe trees.

❚ Spraying: As long as the boots aren’t quite dry and the pores aren’t closed, the impregnation will penetrate more deeply. Textile materials should be sprayed only, regularly care for leather with Meindl Conditioner & Proofer or Meindl Sportwax.

❚ Smooth leather boots should be cared for with Shoe Cream or Meindl Sportwax. Nubuk , velour boots may be treated with Meindl Sportwax or Meindl Conditioner & Proofer. Nubuk and velour leather will become smoother and darker in colour. This care will keep the leather from split-ting and drying out.

❚ To prevent corrosion hooks and eyes should be treated with wax or Vaseline.

❚ Finally, polish the boots.

❚ By the way: Storage is part of proper care. Never store in humid areas, a closed box or plastic bag – always in a place that’s airy and dry! Longtime lack of use and poor care will age your boots much more quickly. Therefore it’s most important for your safety to check your boots and soles carefully before going on your next hike. If in doubt, take your boots to your nearest Meindl retailer.

➀ Cleaning ➂ Waxing ➃ D ring care➁ Spraying

Care for your Meindl bootsOur boots come to you well cared for. Nevertheless, prior to the first

use wax should be applied by hand or by spraying for additional

protection and safety. .It is also very important that you continue

caring for them after they have been worn. In that way they’ll stay

waterproof and breathable on one hand, and the leather will stay

supple, durable and keep its shape, on the other. When buying them,

please think of the correct care product. If you do that, your Meindl

boots will be your best friends for a long, long time.

Trying them on, and the first steps:The correct decision for the right boots takes a bit of time. In the end, you want your new Meindl boots to accompany you on many rewarding hikes. It is best to decide where and how you are going to use your Meindl boots (using the Meindl A through D grading), then you can make the right choice. Our retailers are well trained and will be able to advise you. First of all not every model is right for every foot, and secondly there is more than just the first impression that matters. A comprehensive fitting session with the correct Meindl socks (completing the perfect combination of boots and socks) will give you confidence in your decision right from the start.

Proper lacing is absolutely essential!

1. Slide your foot firmly into the heel. The tongue must be exactly in the center. Include the tongue hook when you lace.

2. Starting from the front the boot should be laced comfortably “tightly” at least as far as the first hook, then a little more loosely from there up the ankle.

3. Preferably walk along the test track and pay close attention to the fit around the heel (no slipping!) and that there’s enough room for your toes (walking downhill). Always try both boots, and sit quietly with them for at least ten minutes, so the material can warm up and adapt.

Make sure you try out the test track in the shop. Afterwards nothing should stand in the way of your personal outdoor or mountaineering experiences.

Intelligence in adaptive fitting looks like this:

You step into a Meindl MFS Vakuum®. You lace it up

and let your body warmth go to work. Thanks to the

vacuum foam in the ankle, interior frontal section,

cuff and tongue areas and also in the footbed the

boot quickly adapts to the exact shape of your foot!

Now the Meindl adaptive fitting reinforced by a

GORE-TEX® stretch lining without a seam in the heel

area turns into the perfect Meindl fit. This allows the

vacuum-foam to develop correctly and more freely.

You notice that your foot is held softly but firmly in

place. With the leather providing optimal stability,

protecting the foot and providing it with a soft bed.

➊ Perfect adjustment to every foot and optimal pressu-re distribution over the entire tread.

➋ The footbed absorbs the foot moisture and releases it downward away from the foot.

➌ Durable and absorbent upper.

Oh wow, what great shoes and Boots! The 6 reasons to choose MEINDL Children’s Shoes and Boots❚ Removable insole for a comfortable and

perfect fit.

❚ Soft padded finishes provide children’s feet with comfortable stability.

❚ Special supports for guaranteeing children’s toes plenty of room.

❚ A non-slip sole with a soft cushioning insert provides stability and security on any surface.

❚ Reflectors increase safety by keeping kids safely visible.

❚ Sturdy heel caps and shockproof rubber or lea-ther protection, resists even the worst stress.

Fun instead of wet feet!Meindl has completely redefined wearability for the youngest: the 2010 collection is all about “dry feet and overall well-being”. This was our develop-ment priority. Whether you’re discovering the great outdoors, hiking on easy trails or even going on small mountain climbs, children should always be experiencing something – and definitely not cold and wet feet!

With Meindl, kids’ play makes sense! Children

should feel their most comfortable when

they’re playing, doing activities and exploring

nature. Here the young feet assume a special

significance. No other part of the body is more

important than the feet, because no part of

the body of children and adolescents is more

stressed. Perfect stability along with safety in

every step giving full freedom of movement,

and their own special soles with special

rubber compounds: all of this should be

standard for children’s boots and shoes. Soft,

durable, flexible, shock-resistant, long-lasting

and multi-functional are properties the Meindl

Children and Youth Shoe Specialists achieve

with high-quality materials. And we, as kids,

are always ahead of the latest technology.

Now about socks ...... if you want to give your children the perfect feel for moving, make sure you give them our Trekking Junior socks. They represent the latest development in function and comfort. And what’s good for adults, should be good enough for kids.

Whether velcroed or laced, with moisture protection or GORE-TEX® – our children’s shoes are up to any challenge! All models can be viewed at www.meindl.de
