POTHOLES IN roads are be-ing filled more quickly, sayLeicestershire County Coun-cil.

Improved maintenance techniqueshave reduced the number of potholes, and they are being dealt with morequickly.

Improvements introduced by thecouncil include a shift from reactive toproactive maintenance, including tack-ling cracked patches of road, beforethey become potholes and better reactivemaintenance, such as sealing of jointsaround potholes.

More patching in the spring andsummer and a 60 per cent increase inthe amount of surface-dressing is alsohelping as are hotboxes, which ensureasphalt is available every day

Due to these improvements, thenumber of potholes has fallen from

more quickly.“While we can never prevent all pot-

holes from forming, we’re determined totackle them more effectively.”

Tony Brooks of Kingfisher Road willbe riding the 140km Velothon in Waleson June 14 and the Prudential LondonRide 100 on August 2.

Tony (58) will be riding with workfriend Simon Wilkinson (53).

“On last year’s London ride 100 wehad to put up with the remains of hurri-cane Bertha so hopefully the weathercan’t be as bad this year” said Tony.

“The course was shortened slightlyfor safety reasons as a result of the atro-cious weather conditions. We’ve decidedto go back for more punishment thisyear in the hope of better weather andbeing able to tackle the full 100 miles!”

I travel on the bus sometimesBut boring? Oh, dear noFor just as soon as I’m aboardI hear those mobiles go…

Behind me: “Course I won’t forget…In front: “I held my tongue…”Beside me, silence reigns supreme!Oh, no, her phone’s just rung

It seems her friend has been stoodup.

However will she cope?Their conversation rambles on,Compulsive as a soap.

I know I shouldn’t listen inBut how to stop my ears? I cannot help but hear it allTheir lives, their hopes, their fears.

He’s got the sack!” “She’s just hadtwins”

“I knew they’d make a fuss”I sit bemused, confused, amused –All life is on the bus.

She’s got her finger on the pulseOf all that’s going onAnd turns disaster into smilesAnd cheers up everyone

I wish that I could write like thatIt must be such a joyTo put her humour into verseAnd such rhyming words employ

Perhaps if I practise long enoughAnd work hard for a whileMaybe I could touch a funny-boneAnd make somebody smile!
