“I have many years’ experience as avolunteer on pilgrimages to Lourdes andmy career in business involved travellingthe world. So meeting the challenges oftravelling, and of supporting those withspecial needs while travelling, is secondnature to me.”

and can be life changing for them.“After a member of my own family

PERSISTENT RAIN fell during most ofAugust’s Mountsorrel Revival butdidn’t spoil the event with many ac-tivities carrying on as planned.

Event organiser; Ian Shonk said: “The MountsorrelREVIVAL was seven months in the planning, with theidea to bring a ‘carnival’ back to the village after manyyears, based on an old style village fete but with amodern twist.

“I decided, if I was going to organise the event, I’dhave all the things I like – hot-rods and custom cars, longbow archery, river trips, swing jive, live music, vintage stalls, and the centre-piece of the day – soapbox racing!”

With relentless rain all morning, and the river start-ing to flood, the decision was made to close down theoutside parts of the Revival. The river field and soapbox race track had to be closed for safety, but, saidIan, “people just wouldn’t give up!” Visitors still cameand the sun finally came out. There was even an im-promptu soap box race and hot-rod show outside theYouth Cafe.

Local band ‘Lockdown’ played in the Buttermarket, belting out rock numbers and creating a real ‘vibe’ inthe street as visitors took in the stalls and attractions.

‘Chicas Locas’ Burlesque performed on the Memori-al Hall stage, and gave burlesque workshops demon-strating how to ‘walk with style’

The American Civil War Society commandeeredCastle Park, setting up camp with their

Cannon, the firingof which openedand closed theRevival.

Radio Leicester’s‘Clueless’ reporter;Julie Mayer came toRevival to find thefinal clue of theprogramme - in thebarrel of the can-non, which she hadto fire live on air towin her challenge.

One visitor said:“I really enjoyedmyself and you couldsee the scale of Ian’svision for this event,it was obviously wellorganised and wouldhave been a big hitwith the public if onlythe weather had beenbetter. I congratulateIan and I think Ispeak for many peoplewhen I say I hope wecan have the event nextyear.”

Ian said: “The whole communitycame together in support of the Revival.Marshall Honda cleared their entire

Some people are like larks, and wake upearly

Before the cockerel’s even finished crow-ing –

They leap out of their beds, invigorated,All bright eyes and quite eager to get go-

ingBut other folk prefer the evening hours –

These ‘owls’ are more productive late atnight.

They need to set a very loud alarm clockAnd wouldn’t dream of rising till it’s lightOf course, we all adapt to life’s requirements:

Our waking time depends on our routine,And every person’s body clock is different

– We’re larks or owls or something in be-tween!

I’m wondering which group I now fallinto – a lark? an owl? I simply cannot choose,

I realise as I doze off by the fireside, thesedays my body clock is set to SNOOZE!

Held at Mountsorrel libraryfrom August 4-9, the exhibition wasjointly organised by the Mountsor-rel Heritage Group (MHG) and theMountsorrel Royal British Legion.

It featured portraits of the menwho left the village to fight andwhich battles they were part of andsadly in some cases where theygave their lives and are now at rest.

At the outbreak of war the pop-ulation of Mountsorrel was 2,417(according to the nearest census,in 1901) and 83 village men werekilled in the conflict, 3.4% of thetotal population. “You can imaginethe impact on the families left be-hind, some of them containing asmany as seven fatherless children”said John Hingley of the MHG.

There were also many photo-graphs of the village as it was inthe early 1900's to underline themany businesses both large andsmall which would have been af-fected either directly or indirectlyby the reduction in the numbers ofworking men either for the dura-tion of the conflict or permanentlybecause they didn't return from thebattlefields.

The Mountsorrel Heritage Groupand the Mountsorrel Branch of TheRoyal British Legion would like toexpress their thanks for the supportof all who attended the exhibitionand their contributions for the saleof books and fridge magnets etc.

This photo was taken in France probably mid 1917 – there’s no date or any annotationsbut it is known that one of the men was killed that autumn. Thanks to visitors to theexhibition we can now name three of the men and believe that we know the family of afourth but are not certain which particular man from the family it it is as several servedin Quarry units. Obviously we’d dearly like to be able to put names to them all. Theyare all serving in a mix of Royal Engineer Quarry units in and around the Marquise areaof north-western France. The board in front of them says “Mountsorrel QuarrymenRE.... doing our bit”. From service records we can say with certainty that there’s a mixhere of men who went in August 1914 with 5th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment andwere later transferred as their skills were needed in the quarries behind the front, andmen who were enlisted directly from home to work in the quarries. From MountsorrelHeritage Group.

Remembrance SundayAlthough we have just marked the

outbreak of World War I` with the eventsdescribed above we will in a few weekstime be launching the 2014 Poppy Ap-peal. The Appeal benefits service peopleand their families from all the cam-paigns from the 1st World War to today– remember there has only been oneyear (1968) since the end of 2nd WorldWar when a British Service person hasnot been killed on active duty some-where across the world. The long termlegacy of support that is needed for ourservice personnel and their families as aresult of operations in Afghanistan aloneis stark. There, since the start of opera-tions, we have suffered 353 killed inaction and a further 51 have died subse-

quently from wounds. In additionwe have several thousand woundedin action many of whom will carrywound and disabilities for the restof their lives. The Royal BritishLegion, with your support, and inco-operation with partner charitiesincluding, Help for Heroes andindividual Service and Regimentalcharities is leading the way in de-livering that support.

Nationally the Poppy Appealraised over £34 million last yearbut we spend at least £1.7 millionevery week of the year on ourlongstanding welfare support initia-tives which include:

• Running our Care Homes andBreak Centres

• Providing a Benefits and Mon-ey Advice service which has helpedover 11,000 individuals to date;

• Making direct Grants totalling£24 million awarded to 42 organi-sations;

• Making individual grants total-ling £18 million to over 22,000beneficiaries.

TO MARK the centenary ofthe start of the Great Warthe Royal British Legion inMountsorrel organised ashort series of commemora-tive services.

The first, a village interdenomination-al church service, was held at St Peter’schurch on Sunday 3rd August and wasled by Reverend Canon Derek Goodman.A congregation of some 80 people at-tended the service which had a theme ofCommemoration and Thanksgiving forthe sacrifices made by villagers duringand in the aftermath of the Great War.

This was followed on Monday by

services, led by Mr E Stacey of Christch-urch and St Peter’s, of commemorationand re-dedication at Castle Hill WarMemorial and later at the Peace Garden. At both memorials wreaths were laid byMiss Ellie Neal, the great great grand-daughter of a local soldier who foughtwith the village territorial company ofthe 5th Battalion the Leicestershire Regi-ment.

The Exhortation at both was read byCol R Martin OBE, County President andBranch President of the MountsorrelBranch of the Royal British Legion, whose grandfather, Major WF Martin ofthe Leicestershire Yeomanry, is one ofthose remembered at the Castle HillMemorial. These services were eachattended by some 70 villagers togetherwith Councillors from Parish, Boroughand County.

Throughout the week the ParishCouncil marked the occasion by flyingthe Union flag at the Parish Rooms andarranging for the Castle Hill Memorial tobe floodlit.

The Mountsorrel Branch, Royal Brit-ish Legion also supported the week longexhibition, “Mountsorrel 1914 – Thevillage and the Men Who Went to War”,organised by the Mountsorrel HeritageGroup and held in Mountsorrel Library.

THE FUTURE of Leicester’s park and ride network, which includesthe site in Birstall, is under discussion after the costs of subsi-dising the service rose.

The Birstall, Enderby and Meynell’s Gorsenetwork is jointly run by the City and CountyCouncils and last year they subsidised theservice with £664,000 – up from £526,000the year before.

The scheme cost £l.737 million to runlast year and generated £1.073 million in

income. In 2011 there were 700,000 pas-senger journeys rising to 830,000 last yearbut the rise in usage has not been sufficientto eliminate the subsidy, say the City Council.

The City and County Councils have jointlydrawn up a number of options for the serv-ice:

• mothballing one of the sites• improved marketing and promotion• increasing ticket prices and charging

for concessionary travelPeter Osborne, County Council cabinet

member for transport, said: “We are work-ing with our colleagues at Leicester CityCouncil to determine the best way to fundthe Park and Ride services to the city. Wehave jointly drawn up a number of optionswith the City Council for the service and weare carrying out an assessment to determinewhich approach will give Leicester’s Parkand Rides a sustainable future. The CountyCouncil has not yet met to publicly discussthe future options for the Park and Ridefacilities.”

• In August, Leicestershire was one ofseven areas in England to benefit from addi-tional government funding for sustainabletransport schemes, receiving £160,000.

The money will not contribute towardsthe park and ride scheme. Peter Osbornesaid: “The funding will be used to continuea range of successful initiatives includingimproved information at bus stops, encour-aging parents and commuters to choosemore sustainable ways to travel and loaningmopeds to young jobseekers to help themfind and access work.”
