1 Design and principle ofoperation
The limit switches are attached to pneumaticcontrol valves as well as to Type 4765 andType 4763 Positioners.
These limit switches have with either induc-tive, electric or pneumatic contacts. They is-sue a signal when the valve travel exceedsor falls below a limit, especially when a con-trol valve has reached its final position. Thissignal is transmitted, e.g. to an alarm or in-dicating system.
1.1 Principle of operation
The valve travel is transmitted either directlyto the pin (1.1) and lever (1) of the limitswitch by the plate (10) or by a coupling pinwhen a positioner is attached. The lineartravel is converted into a rotary motion bythe shaft (2).
1.1.1 Type 4746-x2 Inductive LimitSwitch
In this version, the shaft (2) carries twoswitch cases (3) with adjustable metal tags(4.1) for non-contact activation of the inte-grated proximity switches (5).
For the operation of inductive limit switches(except for Type 4746-0281), appropriateswitch amplifiers must be integrated into theoutput circuit.
The switching function and switching pointare continuously adjustable using theadjustment screw (3.1).
1.1.2 Type 4746-x3 Electric LimitSwitch
In this version, the shaft (2) carries twoswitch cases (3) with adjustable cam discs(4.2). Each cam disc activates an electricdouble-throw switch (7) over the roller (6.1),which is attached to the switch lever (6).
The switching function and switching pointare continuously adjustable using the adjust-ment screw (3.1).
1.1.3 Type 4746-04 PneumaticLimit Switch
In this version, the shaft (2) carries twoswitch cases (3) with adjustable cam discs(4.2). Each cam disc activates a nozzle/flapper system in the pneumatic switch (8).
Whenever the cam disc (4.2) activates theswitch lever (6) over the roller (6.1), the noz-zle in the pneumatic switch (8) is openedand the supply air is switched through toport A1 or A2 by the microswitch (9). Thenozzle is closed in the pneumatic switch (8)and the supply air applied to the mi-croswitch is cut off first when the cam dischas released the switch lever (6). As a result, pressure is no longer applied to ports A1 orA2.
The switching function and switching pointare continuously adjustable using the adjust-ment screw (3.1).

4 Operation
4.1 Adjusting the switching point
The limit switches attached to the controlvalves are usually adjusted in such a waythat a signal is issued when the final travelpositions are reached. Optionally, theswitching point can also be adjusted to anyposition within the travel range, e.g. if an in-termediate position is to be indicated.
The adjusted switch positions can be re-corded on the supplied adhesive labelsmarked A, B and C, and assigned to thecorresponding switching elements.
4.1.1 Type 4746-x2
Move the valve to the switching position andturn the adjustment screw (3.1) until themetal tag (4.1) reaches the switching point.
Always move the valve to the final travel po-sitions from an intermediate position to ad-just or check the switching point!
Note: The switching elements and the leversrequired to activate them react to tempera-ture fluctuations. To ensure reliable switch-ing, the switching hysteresis between themechanical stop (e.g. plug in the seat) andthe switching point of the limit switch mustbe larger than the displacement of the

Distance between switching points for100 mm lever:
Contact SC 3,5-NO 2 mm,Contact SJ 3,5-SN 0.75 mmWith other lever lengths, adjust the switchingpoint to the changed lever length. For example, if the lever length changesfrom 100 mm to 160 mm, the distance bet-ween the switching points is increased from2.0 mm to 3.2 mm correspondingly.
Simplified adjustment of the inductive limitswitches:
Valve CLOSED:Close the valve until the plug sits in the seat
Valve OPEN:Move the valve to the desired travel position,e.g. final position.
Turn the adjustment screw (3.1) to slowlymove the metal tag (4.1) towards thecontact until the switching point isreached.
Turn the adjustment screw in the oppositedirection to achieve that the switchingpoint reaches the stop aftercontact SC 3,5-NO = 1/6 turn andcontact SJ 3,5-SN = 1/16 to 1/10turn.
If the adjustment is performed carefully, thedistances between the switching points spec-ified above apply.
4.1.2 Type 4746-x3 andType 4746-04
For adjustment, the cam disc (4.2) has to bepositioned in such a way that its cam movestowards the roller (6.1, Fig. 2) in accor-dance with the direction of travel.
Move the control valve to the desired switch-ing position (e.g. final travel position "valveOPEN" or "valve CLOSED").
Adjust the switch which is assigned to theupper or lower switching point.
Turn the adjustment screw (3.1) until thecam of the cam disc (4.2) reaches the roller(6.1, Fig. 2) and the switch changes over.To accurately check the switching point, move the valve slightly backward and moveit to the switching position again.

5 Servicing explosion-protectedversions
If a part of the limit switch on which the ex-plosion protection is based needs to be ser-viced, the limit switch must not be put backinto operation until an expert has inspectedthe device according to explosion protectionrequirements, has issued a certificate statingthis or given the device a mark of confor-mity.
Inspection by an expert is not required if themanufacturer performs a routine check onthe device prior to putting it back into oper-ation. The passing of the routine check mustbe documented by attaching a mark of con-formity to the device.
Explosion-protected components may onlybe replaced by original, checked compo-nents from the manufacturer.
Devices that have already been used outsideof hazardous areas and are intended foruse in hazardous areas in future must com-ply with the safety demands placed on re-paired devices. Prior to operation, they mustbe tested according to the specifications stip-ulated for "Servicing explosion-protecteddevices".
