Mountain Village Charter School Vegetation & Spatial Analysis Michael Skolnick | Environmental Planning | Remote Sensing Application Question When working with topography, vegetation health and unsupervised vegetation classifications, which areas on Mountain Village Charter School property are best suitable for new infrastructure? Background Mountain Village Charter School is a state funded nature oriented school on Tenney Mountain Highway in Plymouth, NH. While they are up and running as a fully functional education organization this day, to fulfill their vision of growth, much infrastructure must be added to the land. This presents the problem of where to build additional infrastructure. With the main focus of the school to promote nature education, we must figure out how the school could work with nature to become both fully functional, yet sustainable. This project is focused on how implementation of infrastructure throughout the of vegetation health and land cover, could best benefit the vision of Mountain Village Charter School. Data & Sources Methodology Conclusion & Discussion When looking back on the maps, you can really get a good idea of the specific areas both that could be good areas for infrastructure, as well as areas where infrastructure is not feasible. The areas with steep contour are not suitable for additional infrastructure, meanwhile some areas with low vegetation health may be unsuitable for the schools goals. However, some of these areas with low vegetation health turned out to be openings in the landscape. Those areas, along with additional logging trails for easy access and a mellow contour could be extremely suitable for future infrastructure. Using ArcMap 10.2 this analysis was conducted with an understanding of groundcover due to unsupervised image classification and NDVI imagery. After identifying the parcel of land that Mountain Village Charter School rests upon, adding topography to the parcel was crucial to show the slope of the landscape, an integral aspect to building a structure. The combination of topography, NDVI imagery, vegetation health based on vegetation photosynthesis, and vegetated groundcover classification could help us determine best land use practices for structure implementation on the property. After analyzing the data, a visit to the site to understand the data was crucial and plotting points of interest using the GPS friendly collector app. helped us reach the final goal.
