The Auxiliary Insider

Breast cancer is the most common cancer that affects Canadian women.

Last year, with your help, you and 500 other participants were able to raise over $250,000 at Yoga in Motion.

I am proud to be the Yoga in Motion Ambassador again this year. I am inspired by your commitment and support for breast cancer awareness and research at Mount Sinai Hospital.

On Friday, August 13, 2004 I went for a routine

mammogram at Mount Sinai Hospital. As a result, I found out I had an invasive form of breast cancer. Like more than the 23,000 Canadian women who are diagnosed every year with this disease, my world changed forever.

I encourage you to join me and hundreds of other participants on Sunday, April 10, 2011 as we do something amazing — a double marathon of yoga and Zumba® fitness benefiting breast cancer research at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital. Proceeds will support life

saving research to better diagnose and treat breast cancer. It is only through research that we can change the face of this disease.

Last year’s survey results indicated that 100 per cent of our participants intend to register this year. I’m sure you’re anxious to get started, which is why I’m writing to let you know that the yogainmotion.ca website is now live and able to accept your registration. So please visit yogainmotion.ca today! Please spread the word among your family, friends and colleagues.

To accommodate our growing numbers, Yoga in Motion will provide more space this year at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex. The event format will still include great yoga classes, Zumba® fitness classes, vendors, free food samples, breast cancer screening and a community of individuals who care deeply about the cause.

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday, April 10, 2011 and together we are in motion for a cure.

Sincerely,

Dr. Marla Shapiro

Chef’s Challenge: The Ultimate Success Story!Chef’s Challenge: the Ultimate Battle for a Cure with Gordon ramsay presented by World MasterCard was held on November 20, 2010 in Toronto at the Carlu. Joining Chef Ramsay on-stage were top Canadian celebrity chefs and Food Network stars — David Rocco, Jamie Kennedy, Lynn Crawford, Mark McEwan and Massimo Capra.

The event raised over $1.1 million for breast and ovarian cancer research and education to benefit the Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre and the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital.

Each participant raised a minimum of $2,500 to attend the inaugural event. The top 50 fundraisers had the privilege of joining teams, led by a celebrity chef to prepare three of a

five course dinner live on-stage. At the end of the evening, Team Crawford was awarded first place, winning over the judges with the final course, a perfect crème brûlée.

A brunch was held the following morning at the home of Jeff and Lori Rosenthal as a thank-you to the lead sponsors, celebrity chefs, and the top 25 fundraisers, which included Harry Lebovic, who raised over $30,000.

The inaugural Chef’s Challenge was a smash hit, attracting participants from across the country and donors from 23 countries. The ads and media exposure reached 27 million people and the website received 5.7 million hits. Stay tuned for more information on next year’s Chef’s Challenge or visit the website at www.chefschallengeforacure.com.

This year our goal is to raise $350,000 for breast cancer research and care at Mount Sinai Hospital. We anticipate that 750 people will be in motion for a cure on April 10, 2011.

The first Moms for Sinai meeting was held on November 24, 2010 at Vice President, Karen Goldlist’s home.

Over 54 young mothers attended the evening reception. Karen started off the night by welcoming guests and sharing her personal feelings about the Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary, including the programs that have had special meaning to her, like the Rexall Baby’s First Comfort program.

Dr. Rachel Spitzer, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Mount Sinai Hospital and the Peter A. Silverman Centre, Global Health Scholar, Kenya, was the guest speaker. Her work abroad highlighted the exceptional differences between the levels of care available to mothers in Kenya versus Canada. Many of the young mothers were captivated by her experiences and Mount Sinai Hospital’s involvement, promoting international women’s health. A portion of the Auxiliary’s $4.5-million Women’s Health pledge supports the Hospital’s international efforts. The Moms for Sinai information night attracted 34 new members who joined Moms for Sinai.

The first Moms for Sinai meeting of the new year is taking place on February 2, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. in the B.I. Ghert Conference Centre, room 337, Mount Sinai hospital. To inquire or RSVP to the meeting please contact Antoniette Garda deCabezas, development Officer, Special events, at [email protected] or 416-586-4800 ext. 8282.

Dear Members and Friends,

Welcome to the bigger and better issue of the Auxiliary Insider which highlights our many accomplishments.

In its inaugural year, the Chef’s Challenge with Gordon Ramsay exceeded our expectations —generating over $1.1 million for breast and ovarian cancer research and education at Mount Sinai Hospital. Plans are well under way for next year’s event, and I am confident that Chef’s Challenge will remain one of the city’s best events in 2011.

The third annual Yoga in Motion featuring Zumba® is taking place at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex on April 10, 2011 and we are privileged to have Dr. Marla Shapiro as our Event Ambassador again this year. Registration has begun, so sign-up today! For more information please visit yogainmotion.ca.

I am excited to report on a new Auxiliary initiative, Future Sinai. This young professional division of the Auxiliary will engage 20-30 year old philanthropists by providing an opportunity for social interaction and community outreach to benefit the Auxiliary’s $4.5-million Women’s Health pledge. A launch party is organized for Saturday, February 5, 2011 at the eZone. Tickets can be purchased online at www.mountsinai.ca/auxiliary/future-sinai.

Strike Out Cancer, the Auxiliary’s new three-day fundraising initiative, is presented by RioCan and will take place from May 14-17, 2011. Thirty teams of 12 will vie at the chance to win the ultimate celebrity baseball fundraising tournament. The Grand Slam Gala Party, with entertainment provided by Chicago is the finale celebration of the three-day tournament. Register at www.helpstrikeoutcancer.com and let’s play ball!

I’m thrilled to announce that Perspectives magazine is celebrating 25 years of print. I hope that you will support the magazine this year by sponsoring an editorial page or by purchasing a greeting. Funds raised through Perspectives will benefit the Women’s Health pledge and all contributions will be issued a tax receipt. A form is attached to this newsletter.

With so many exciting things in 2011 there is something for everyone, so please get involved. Together, we are the Bright Minds and Big Hearts that support Mount Sinai Hospital.

Wishing you all the best in 2011!

Following the success of the Sinai Soirée at Gala last May, the Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary is excited to launch Future Sinai, a young professionals division

for men and women aged 20 – 30 years old. We are excited to create an avenue for young professionals to become involved with Mount Sinai Hospital at an early stage in their lives. My generation represents the future philanthropists of Mount Sinai Hospital. By getting involved in our 20s, we can develop the skills and build the relationships necessary to become community leaders and lifelong benefactors.

Future Sinai members will have the opportunity to sit on Future Sinai and Auxiliary committees, take on leadership roles, as well as gain exclusive access to Future Sinai

events. All members will be invited to participate in Auxiliary events and programs including Yoga in Motion, Strike Out Cancer, Sinai Soirée and Perspectives magazine.

The official Future Sinai launch will take place on February 5, 2011 at the eZONE, an all encompassing entertainment complex and the perfect backdrop for a night to meet and mingle with Future Sinai members. Tickets are $40 for members and $50 for non-members.

To learn more information about Future Sinai member-ship and to purchase tickets to the launch party, please visit www.mountsinai.ca/auxiliary/future-sinai.
