DO YOU KNOW THE ISO 31000 RISK MANAGEMENT STANDARD?

Is your present risk management programme aligned with the principles, framework and the process

outlined in the ISO 31000? Are you sure that your consulting advisors are recommending a global RM

solution aligned with ISO 31000? Is your risk management programme oriented to promote business

performance or is it perceived as a bureaucratic compliance / reporting system?

This highly knowledge-based two-day conference explores how ISO 31000 can be incorporated into your

existing risk management practices. It will help attendees to develop a practical tailored action plan for

their own business or those of their clients.

Presenters will show how line managers, auditors and risk managers can use ISO 31000 as a catalyst for

developing sustainable risk management and can assist in embedding and proving risk management

effectiveness. Participants will learn how ISO 31000 can add value in building a solid risk management

framework and at each stage of the risk management process – from establishing the context and risk

identification – to monitoring and reporting – without creating a bureaucratic compliance / reporting

system.

Title 1: Is the concept of “inherent risk” useful or is it inherently flawed?

• The term ‘inherent risk’ is conspicuous by its absence from both ISO 31000 & Guide 73• Why is this omission a serious inhibitor in conversations - let alone negotiations - about risk?• Where, How and Why is it currently (mis)used?• Well, primarily by external auditors as equal to gross risk, i.e. to contrast it with residual risk• Also conspicuous by their absence, despite figuring prominently in another ISO standard (27005) and

risk related dialogues: threat & vulnerability!• Perhaps amongst those present someone can explain these flagrant omissions: too ‘political’ or simply

items of contention about which no comprise could be reached at the drafting stage? Title 2: Internal Auditors & Risk - an oxymoron?

• Where do internal auditors (IAs) fit in the hackneyed GRC complex?• Just part of Governance in their assurance role or also as part, somehow or other, of Risk Management?• What about the Compliance / Control aspects?• Fundamental question: are IAs good evaluators of risk?• The answer, generally, is ‘no’ IMHO, because IAs are, by nature, risk adverse• Yet the IA function is expected to provide ‘added value’ not just be a cost centre!• So how can IAs nevertheless do so, in particular to improve risk management?• Beware the cost-effectiveness argument to place IA & risk functions together• Where do IAs figure in COSO 2013 & ERM / ISO 31000 & 27005 & 22301 / et al?• Unfortunately, not enough time to consider the Combined Reporting &/or Combined Assurance

consequences of the aforementioned situations.

About South AfricaAbout South Africa

South Africa, a land that many have called the most beautiful place on earth, is a place where one can feel

the rhythmic pulse of Africa intertwined with the western influences of the past, a place where the soul of a

country comes from the hearts and minds of its people, where hope and joy has been spawned by the

pursuit of freedom and equality, where the rolling hills, towering mountains and fertile valleys give way to

vibrant and dynamic cities, and where the wildest of experiences can be enjoyed by the most sophisticated

of palates. Yes indeed, South Africa truly is a multi-faceted and deeply interesting place to visit.

It is this rich diversity of experiences that transcends all boundaries and flows evenly from its people to its

landscapes that makes South Africa so unique. From when you enter South Africa to when you leave you

will experience this diversity in many forms, for instance South Africa is a melting pot of different cultures,

creeds and backgrounds from around the world and throughout the continent that blend together to form

what is affectionately known as the Rainbow Nation, each one being as uniquely African as the next. You

can journey through the wild wonders of the African bush where the prolific wildlife roams free and the

natural beauty stuns and astounds, you can do this on foot, by car, through the air in a hot air balloon or on

the back of the mighty African Elephant. You can travel over mountains and around coastlines where the

scenic landscape could not have been painted better by the most gifted of artists and end up in

cosmopolitan cities which form the backbone of the African renaissance. You can experience our rich and

interesting history, and learn how a dark and tumultuous past has given rise to one of the newest and most

progressive democracies, where a constitution is not only a bill of rights but a way of life. All of this is

brought together by world class infrastructure and easily accessible tourism routes which not only provide

access to South Africa, but to our neighbours Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Mozambique -

each country offering its own unique experiences and charm.

About Cape TownAbout Cape Town

You will never be bored in Cape Town. A city where the ocean and the mountains are as much a part of the

city as its people, the opportunities to explore will keep visitors to this cosmopolitan city entertained and

excited.

The oldest city in South Africa, Cape Town’s cultural heritage spans 300 years, with diverse colonial

influences and traditional cultures coming together to fascinate visitors with a rich experience. Famously

known as the place of Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment, Robben Island is situated just off the city’s

coastline.

Botanical Garden. Wine lovers will find that Cape Town has much to offer when it comes to fine wines, and

visitors can experience Cape Town’s beautiful landscape when going on a wine tasting tour. The Victoria &

Alfred Waterfront is a unique experience where culture and high-end shopping come together in one

breathtaking location, offering world-class accommodation and efficient transport methods.

Tourism routes such as the Cape Care Route, showcases sustainable development by taking tourists to

destinations that highlights projects where people are actively accepting the responsibility of caring for the

CLIMATE

Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate, with mild, moderately wet winters and dry, warm summers.

During summer (November to February) the temperature on the coast generally ranges between 15°C and

35°C (while inland it increases by approximately 3-5°C).

The summer sun is no laughing matter, however, so make sure that you slap on plenty of strong sunscreen.

The south-easterly wind known as the Cape Doctor also makes its appearance in summer, wreaking havoc

on hairstyles and beach parties, but performing a vital service to the city by clearing it of smog.

Average temperatures and monthly rainfall in Cape Town - Dec 15-25˚C / 59-77˚F – 17mm / 0.7in

CREDIT CARDS, SHOPPING

The South African Rand (ZAR) is the local currency. All major credit cards are accepted throughout South Africa.

CURRENCY AND EXCHANGE

The South African Rand (ZAR) is the local currency. Foreign exchange can be done in any of the hotels. A

passport will be required for ALL transactions.

Foreigners can claim sales tax refunds and should ask salesmen to fill out a tax refund form when

purchasing any goods.

ELECTRICITY/VOLTAGE

The voltage throughout South Africa is 220V/50hz. Most plugs are 15 amp 3-prong or 5 amp 2-prong, in

both cases with round pins. If you're bringing anything electrical, bring an adapter. Most hotels have 110

volt outlets for electric shavers and appliances. Adaptors can be bought at the airport on your arrival, and

may be available at your hotel.

LIABILITY AND INSURANCE

Registration for the Congress implies that delegates agree that neither the Local Organizing Committee

nor the Professional Conference Organizer assume any liability or responsibility for any losses, accidents or

damage to person's private property. Delegates are requested to make their own arrangements for

medical, travel and personal insurance.

MALARIA

Malaria risk in South Africa is confined to the northeastern parts of the country (the Lowveld of

Mpumalanga and Limpopo and on the Maputaland coast of KwaZulu-Natal). The time of the conference

coincides with the rainy season in that region, therefore the risk of malaria is high. Antimalarial

chemoprophylaxis is recommended as well as measures to prevent mosquito bites should be taken.

The cheapest, safest and most effective measures against malaria are physical barriers such as a mosquito net, and the use of a good insect repellent.

MEDICAL SERVICE

South Africa does not have a national health scheme. The patient is individually responsible for settling all accounts. Travel insurance covering accidents, illness or hospitalization during your stay is strongly recommended.

Access to medical care for Conference participants will be available should there be a need.

OFFICIAL LANGUAGE

South Africa has 11 official languages but at the Congress only ENGLISH will be spoken. No simultaneous translation will be provided.
