SituationMount Emerald is situated on the rural southern edge of Kempsey, surrounded by open countryside. Kempsey is a popular village with amenities that include a shop, primary school, churches, doctors’ surgery, several pubs, garage, and sports clubs with tennis, cricket and angling.
The cathedral city of Worcester has more extensive shopping and other facilities. There is Premiership rugby, County cricket and horse racing on the banks of the River Severn. The area is well known for its schooling.
There is excellent access to the motorway network via junction 7 of the M5. There are direct train services to Birmingham and London Paddington from the Worcester stations.
The nearby lanes connect with local footpaths and bridleways across delightful South Worcestershire countryside.
For sale freehold This impressive and historic home has origins dating back to the 16th century. The current Regency style villa was built circa 1820 and was significantly remodelled in 1936. The stable block was added in the late 19th century. The property consists of:
The main house: An attractive, seven bedroom Regency style villa of just under 5,500 sq. ft. on two storeys with mellow brick elevations under a slate roof. The principal reception rooms are dual aspect and well-proportioned and have solid wood floors and feature fireplaces. The décor in the rest of the house is slightly dated but has been well maintained by the current owners. A new central heating system was installed in 2020.
Annexe: A self-contained, two storey annexe of about 960 sq. ft. featuring a 31’ reception room with doors opening to the garden.
Emerald Cottage: A single storey three bedroom lodge at the south east corner of the property with planning consent for a separate vehicular access. Dating from the late 19th century, this pretty cottage has many period architectural features - a veranda with glazed roof at the front, cast iron fire surrounds and grates, quarry tiled and solid wood floors and panelled doors with ‘beehive’ pattern turned wooden knobs, brass escutcheons and finger plates. The details are of very high quality and more decorative than usual for a lodge or servant’s accommodation.
The stable block: The brick stable block along with the carriage house on the north side and the groom’s cottage to the south were added in the late 19th century. Over the
central range of the block is a weather-boarded clock tower with an iron weather vane depicting a fox. The period interior is remarkably original and intact. The carpentry inside is of exceptional quality, using pitch pine for the partitions, doors and to line the walls. The back walls of the four stalls are plaster distempered in green with glazed ventilation openings with ornate iron grilles behind them. Above these are holders with labels painted with the names of horses, on which ‘Pixie’, ‘Sportsman’ and ‘Epsom’ are immortalised. Many of the original hooks and saddle brackets survive, as do feed chutes and mangers. There is also a feed bin and a large tack box. The floor is of two types of brick: blue ‘chocolate block’ type bricks (as in the courtyard) for the

looseboxes, and a brown narrow rectangular brick in front of the stalls. The Carriage house, currently used as a garage has a pitch pine parquet floor, laid in herringbone pattern. It is lined with timber boarding and has three large wooden doors which slide on their original rollers, opening on to the courtyard. Double doors lead on to the driveway.
OutsideThe house sits in the centre of its five acres of grounds. The drive is lined with an avenue of old lime trees and Victorian cast iron railings and gates. A paddock has a circular planting of trees encircled by railings with a decorative chain at the top. There are some magnificent specimen trees, amongst which are Western red cedars, pines, larches, a large hornbeam, and an American oak. There is also an oak tree estimated to be around 500 years old.
There are two orchards with old varieties of apples, pears, plums, and damson and a useful brick built potting shed with lean to glass house on one side.
Next to the potting shed is a multi-purposed building, the loft and louvred ventilation suggest a use for birds of some kind and it has been suggested it was once used for cock-fighting. The brick building has a slate roof and a veranda to the east side. It has very decorative circular iron ventilation grilles along two sides.
ServicesMains water and electricity. Oil fired central heating. Private drainage via a septic tank and soakaway field.
