Touch Typing Course

The use of laptops and tablets has become an accepted practice in our classrooms. To assist students to make the most of this technology, we will be running an after school touch typing course, starting Term 2 Week 2 – 15th May (Wednesdays) from 3.30 – 5pm. This course will be run by Jan Morris, from Computer Success, who has run her programme in other secondary schools for several years. The course will run for 6 sessions of 90 minutes. There is a limit of 20 students per course, with further courses planned to meet demand. The cost of the course is $100. Students may use their own or a school machine.

Thank you for your patience regarding the delay of the publication of this Quarterly. A range of problems caused the delay, the most significant of which was the serious injury to our designer and Head of Art, Daniella Aleh. We wish her a speedy recovery from her very serious foot injury. I would like to thank Ms Vanita Curin for taking the time to make sure that this publication actually happened

Term 1 was a glorious term for the school. It was a very long term; the longest on record since the advent of the four term year many years ago. The school ended term 1 with 2602 students enrolled. This is expected to continue to rise in the future. While secondary school rolls are supposed to be at a low, with big rises predicted in the next few years as the “ bulge” in the primary schools comes through, we find ourselves with our largest ever roll. Some careful planning is being done to make sure that we can continue to accommodate our ever-increasing student numbers.

Our academic results were the best that they have been on record. All levels of NCEA are at record highs and are well in excess of decile 7 (our current school decile) and national averages. In fact, the results and the recently released leavers’ data places our students’ outcome alongside those from decile 9 and 10 schools. Our scholarship results were outstanding. Our 92 scholarships placed us 5th in New Zealand. Scholarship is the top academic benchmark in New Zealand now, irrespective of what qualification system is in place at the school. The reason for this ongoing success is due, in the main, to our very strong culture of continual improvement and drive for excellence in all areas of school life, our relentless approach to tracking and monitoring student achievement and our top quality staff.

This year I have been delighted to appoint a number of new staff who have replaced staff that have largely either retired, taken leave to travel overseas or for maternity reasons or have been promoted elsewhere. Of note are the eleven first year teachers that have brought new levels of energy and enthusiasm to the school. The facilities have never been better as, after seven years of planning and building, we now have our English and Arts block back as a brand new, refurbished and redesigned and, most importantly, waterproof building. The top floor of D block has been refurbished and a new block next to D block will hopefully start construction in August.

On the sporting front, we have celebrated a term of record summer success. We managed a record number of Auckland titles at the Auckland athletic championships, the 1st XI cricket team won the Auckland one day title for the first time and have qualified for the Gillette Cup finals, the boys’ softball team won the New Zealand championship, the rowers made A finals at the Maadi Cup and the girls’ Futsal team won the national title.

On the arts front, we continue to attract top students, have established the Performing Arts Academy and once again have lifted the level of performance across all arts areas.

The new 99 year renewable lease with the ASB to secure the farm for both the school and our Mount Albert Community has been a huge success for the school. The work of the chairman Greg Moyle and previous chairman Peter Thorp has proven to be critical in the successful resolution of this project.

Our students continue to enjoy leadership opportunities. This year we have selected three important groups of leaders. The school prefects are led by Head Boy Elias Goodhue, Head Girl Amelia Scharting, Deputy Head Boy Don Wu and Deputy Head Girl Jessica Munro. We have also increased the profile, support and expectations of our sport captains and arts leaders. Overall we have an excellent group of young men and women to lead the school this year.

Welcome to New StaffJoanne Berry (nee Hart) is pleased to return to the English department after an absence of two years, during which time she got married and had a daughter. Joanne previously taught at Mount Albert Grammar School for 4 years and was Head of the English Faculty for much of that time. Joanne has also taught English in a number of secondary schools in England during her 7 years of teaching before emigrating to New Zealand.

Brent Bookerhas joined us from five years at Alfriston College and two years as a house-husband. He is very interested in conservation and New Zealand’s natural heritage. Brent is very keen to be involved with athletics.

Haana Bovaird has joined our Physical Education Department from the University of Otago. Haana has moved back up to Auckland and is looking forward to teaching both junior and senior Physical Education and Health. Haana has a passion for many sports, particularly netball. This year she will be coaching a junior netball team.

Paula CalverPaula Calver has joined the Science Department as the Head of Junior Science having previously taught at St Mary’s College.

Anzar Chidahas joined the Mathematics department as a Mathematics and Statistics teacher. He has a degree from the University of Auckland majoring in Applied Mathematics and minoring in Statistics. He loves most sports, but is especially fond of rugby and cricket.

Kathy Edmonds has joined the Languages Department as a part time French and German teacher. Kathy has taught French and German for 20 years, both in a full time, and part time capacity. Kathy held the position of Teacher in charge of French and Assistant Head of the Languages Department for 10 years before making a life style choice to teach part time. Kathy is passionate about languages and she has often accompanied school trips to France, Germany and New Caledonia over the years. She is also currently studying Stage II Spanish by correspondence at Massey University.

Richie Folomu is a past student, finishing in 2002. He completed his teaching practicum and has worked part-time over the past few years at MAGS. He is looking forward to teaching PE and Health and also coaching the Under 14 Rugby Team. His other interests include travelling, seafood, rugby union/league/tag and spending time with family and friends.

Alex Green has joined the Science department as a General Science and Biology teacher after graduating from the University of Auckland. With a keen interest in sport,

Alex so far has been involved in girls’ Volleyball and will be taking a netball team for the winter sports season.

Jill Hackettjoined us as a Teacher Aide in the Learning Centre at the beginning of Term 2. She brings considerable experience to this role having worked as a teacher aide in other educational settings. Jill enjoys touch rugby, soccer and indoor netball.

Matthew Huang has joined the science department as a general science and biology teacher. Originally from Taiwan, he has lived in Auckland for the past 18 years. He also has a passion for music, and hopes to contribute to the musical activities of the school. Matthew has coached junior soccer, and prepares to continue this year.

Nathan KaraA new position in the Arts Faculty, Arts Department Assistant, has been taken up by Nathan Kara, an ex-MAGS student who has the experience and enthusiasm that was required for this position. HODs are delighted to have him on board to assist in the development of Arts projects.

Michelle Kiernanhas joined the science department as Labo-ratory Assistant. Michelle has had an extensive and varied career in the medical field and is returning to this arena after a number of years’ absence during which she raised her children and became involved in volunteer and other school-based activities.


Grace Leaso has joined our Commerce Department as the new Accounting teacher. Before becoming a teacher, Grace worked overseas and more recently at Skycity as an Accountant. Grace enjoys travelling, having lived in London and Australia, and is an avid Auckland Blues supporter.

Dan MillsDaniel has joined the Technology and Mathematics departments as a Junior Technology and Mathematics teacher. He has recently come back to New Zealand to complete his Graduate Diploma in Teaching and start his teaching career. He loves teaching, water sports and travel, especially after recently spending time in America, Canada and The United Kingdom.

Geoff Moonhas joined Mount Albert Grammar School as Director of Rugby, his former employment was as coaching manager with Counties Manukau Sport and Gacu. He is a former Head of Department Physical Education from Aorere College and Sports Director from De LaSalle College. Geoff has also worked 10 years fulltime in Rugby with Auckland Rugby and the Blues as well as with Bristol Rugby in the English Premiership. Geoff is married to Angela with three children

Waimirirangi Paul has joined our Te Reo Maori Department from the University of Auckland. Having been raised in a Kura Kaupapa Maori environment

and also completing practicum placements last year, she developed an interest in the ways in which both Maori and non-Maori students learn te reo within large, urban, mainstream educational environments, which has since brought her to Mount Albert Grammar School. She looks forward to teaching the junior programme for te reo Maori for 2013, as well as assisting with the tutorage of the Puna o Wairaka Kapa Haka group.

Tharindu PorageOur new Network Manager is Tharindu Porage who is from Sri Lanka and comes to us with extensive qualifications and experience in IT. He holds a BSc. Information Systems (Special) from University of Sri Jayewardenepura-Sri Lanka and is a professional member of the British Computer Society. Tharin has worked in the IT field as an IT Administrator and a Senior IT Executive (Head of IT) for over six years in well-known and large manufacturing companies, as well as in a brands-buying company called DBA. His hobbies are listening to music, regular gym, playing rugby and swimming.

Sarah ReidSarah has joined the English department as a General English teacher. She has recently shifted to Auckland from Christchurch having previously graduated from the University of Canterbury’s College of Education. She loves teaching and the performing arts, especially musical theatre and dance.

David Shentonhas joined the Technology department as a Building Studies and Graphics teacher. He has recently shifted to Auckland from Gisborne after previously teaching at Campion College as Head of Curriculum Technology.

Neeru Sharmawas born and brought up in Thane near Mumbai, Maharastra, India. She came to New Zealand for further studies and passed IT level 7 in Year 2011. Neeru joined us as a volunteer late last year and has been employed in our IT department since late March. She likes working with computers!

Brett Sorrenson has joined the Social Studies Department from the University of Waikato. He is very interested in Cricket, Squash, Rugby and League and is looking forward to being involved with these sports.

Teresa Taylorhas slipped almost seamlessly into the role of Enrolment Officer/Data Manager. This is due, at least in part, to the fact that she came to us from a similar role at St Mary’s College. Her familiarity with KAMAR and with enrolment procedures in general have made the transition a comparatively easy one.

Annemarie Wrightis the new Head-master’s Personal Assistant. She has previously worked as a PA/EA in the private sector, so is new to the school environment. She is a mother of two sons, has a granddaughter and enjoys sports, particularly golf which she plays.

Outstanding NCEA Results and 92 ScholarshipsMount Albert Grammar School students performed with spectacular success in the 2012 New Zealand Scholarship awards. These examinations represent the very pinnacle of academic success for secondary school students. Our 2012 tally is 92 scholarships of which 14 were at the outstanding level.

Congratulations in particular to :Matthew Battley, Samuel Davis, Edward Hughes, Natasha Nipper and Dhanasit Srijamorn - four Scholarships each.Taliesin Budvietas and Ayumu Ozawa - three scholarships each, two of which were Outstanding, both one of the top 54 scholars in New Zealand. Max Ashmore - five Scholar- ships, three of which were Outstanding, the top Scholarship mark nationally in Biology and is also one of the top 54 Scholars in New Zealand. The scholarship success caps off a great academic year for the school that saw pass rates at level one and level two reach 89% and an increase at level 3 that is well above the national average.The level of endorsements continues to rise and at all levels is well above the national average.Sincere congratulations are extended to our students for their achievements, and acknowledgement is made to the academic ability, preparation and perseverance required of them to reach such degrees of success. Scholarships were achieved

across 14 different subjects - Biology, Chemistry, Chinese, Classical Studies, Economics, English, Geography, History, Mathematics with Calculus, Photography, Physical Education, Physics, Science and Statistics and Modelling.

The Outstanding Scholarships were achieved in Biology, Classical Studies, Mathematics with Calculus, Physics and Statistics and Modelling. Multiple subject Scholarships were awarded to 22 MAGS students - 10 achieving 2 subject Scholarships and 6 achieving 3 subject Scholarships each.

And, finally, Max Ashmore who not only achieved five Scholarships, three of which were Outstanding, but also achieved the top Scholarship mark nationally in Biology, and is one of the top 54 Scholars in New Zealand. These young scholars are well-deserving of their outstanding academic success and are to be proud of their individual efforts. Such results also provide great satisfaction to the dedicated teaching staff that develop Scholarship programmes to support, coach and direct our students in their Scholarship pursuits, and also those staff who have contributed to the academic development of these students across their time at Mount Albert Grammar School. Again, our most sincere congratulations are given to each and every one of the Scholarship recipients listed above, together with best wishes for ongoing success in their future academic endeavours.

This year we have 95 International Students from China, Mongolia, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, India, Malaysia, Russia, New Caledonia and Iran.

University EntranceWe congratulate the 90% of last year’s Year 13 International Students who gained entry to a University. We note with pride that Minjung Kwon has been accepted by the University of Nottingham, UK, to study Law and Hyun Jong Kim has been accepted by the University of Auckland to study Engineering.

PrefectsNayuta joined the school in 2012. He has had an excellent record of service to the international student group and to his sport, football. He is a cheerful and personable young man with a strong sense of loyalty to the school.

Iris joined the school in 2011 and is a fine academic with a bright personality, and excellent social skills. Iris was also a student leader in 2012, providing support to the other Chinese students.

Orientation Trip & Barbecue

Our new students this year were given an orientation to the school on arrival and then taken on a guided tour around Auckland, making stops at North Head and Mission Bay. A traditional Kiwi barbeque for all students was held at the front of the school during lunchtime. This barbecue was enjoyed by all, together with a number of staff involved in teaching and support.

Vietnamese ScholarshipThis year’s Vietnamese scholar is Quang Toan Le, Year 12. His performance in 2012 was extremely good in every way and the school was very pleased to be able to offer him a scholarship for part of his 2013 fees. The Vietnamese scholarship scheme has been going now for 3 years and has been put in place by the school, in collaboration with Mr. Thuan Vovan, our Vietnamese consultant, in a deliberate attempt to reward the best all-round Vietnamese students.

Sports TournamentEvery year we organise a number of sports tournaments just for our international students. Most students who take part do not play organised sport, but in these tournaments they have a chance to participate and “represent their country”. Last year we had Football, Basketball and Volleyball tournaments.This year’s first sports tournament was Volleyball. Remarkably, over 50 students in 8 teams took part, half of our current student roll. 7 teams were mixed, boys and girls. Many of the participants had never played Volleyball before! The eventual winners were Team Japan.

This year we had an inaugural Table Tennis tournament. Not surpris- ingly, the strength of this sport mainly lies with our Chinese students. The top team was

Iris Li and Kai Fang. Held over two nights, the tournament had over 40 keen players.

International ChoirA group of 20 students, mostly international plus Mr. Cole and Mrs. Hutchins, have formed a Choir with Choirmaster Peter Sua. Once again this is a great opportunity for youngsters to participate in a team and to explore their vocal talents.

Homestays Required:We welcome applications from caring Kiwi families within easy travel distance of the school to provide short-term or longer-term homestays for our international students, boys and girls. Peer SupportThis term has again seen an outstanding group of Year 13 students giving their time and energy in service to the school through the Peer Support Programme.Commencing with two days of training in January, the young leaders were equipped with leadership and team building skills, which facilitated their role as mentors to the incoming Year 9 students. This involved welcoming and orientating the Year 9s in an intensive day and a half of activities at the beginning of the school year. These were designed to provide the younger students with the best possible experience of their entry into a large secondary school. Friendships were made and trust was built up over that initial time which has continued to be developed in the succeeding weeks.The Peer Support leaders continue to visit their Year 9 class weekly and follow up with more informal contacts throughout the school day. These provide opportunity for the younger students to share any concerns or questions, which the seniors may deal with, or pass on to an adult. The trust built between the students has been an invaluable link, which has improved the pastoral care for our newest intake. No doubt, in four years time, the senior students of 2017 will remember their own Peer Support experience this year and be able to give back to MAGS as Peer Support leaders themselves.

Pasifika Homework CentreHomework has been running since Week 5 every Thursday 3.15pm to 5pm of this term. We encourage MAGS students to use this opportunity to seek extra help with homework, mentoring by senior students and tutorials. In Term 2 the University of Auckland will be supporting the Homework Centre with mentors who are currently completing their degrees or have since graduated. All are welcome.

Pasifika Parents Evenings MAGS Junior Pasifika Parents Evening was held on Thursday 21st February, 2013We officially welcomed our Year 9 Pasifika students and also acknowledge the academic success of our Junior Pasifika Graduates who gained Certificates and Diplomas of Academic Excellence in 2012. The Senior Pasifika evening was held two weeks later.Mount Albert Grammar School is committed to encouraging academic success. It was particularly important that our Pasifika students are advised how they might best gain results that later determine subject choices and ultimately career pathways. We are always happy to see such a great turn out.

The Scholars’ Assembly took place on Monday 8 April in the F W Gamble hall. It was most ably hosted by the Academic Prefects, Lauren Curd, Oliver Brooks, Grace Holland and Kuldeep Dalvi. The presentations were made by Mr Greg Moyle, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and members of the Senior staff of the school.Two hundred and thirteen students were honoured for their academic success in the 2012 NCEA Examinations and received or were re-awarded a Scholar Lion. Of these, 94 earned their Award at Level 1, 67 at Level 2 and 52 at Level 3.

The criteria for awarding a Scholar Lion was changed for 2012 and students who earned their National Certificate of Educational Achievement endorsed with Excellence were eligible for the award. A small number of students who had demonstrated academic excellence but had not previously received a Scholar lion were also awarded the honour.Highlight of the ceremony was the recognition accorded the first girls to have their names inscribed on the Scholars Honours Board. Alexandra Crawford and Natasha Nipper deserve the accolade.

Congratulations are extended to Max Ashmore who achieved 3 Outstanding Scholarships and two other Scholarships as the top-performing student, one or two places outside the top ten students nationally.

The other students to have their names added to the Honours Board are: Matthew Battley, Taliesin Budvietas, Samuel Davis,Daniel Dillon, Edward Hughes, Joshua Moody, Ayumu OzawaTimothy Rutledge and Dhanasit Srijamorn.

J U N I O R S C H O O L

On Thursday 31st January the Year 10 cohort of 2012 graduated into Year 11 with the symbolic Junior Graduation Ceremony in the F.W. Gamble Hall. This ceremony was attended by approximately 260 parents and the students that gained their diplomas with Merit or Excellence were recognized by crossing the school stage to receive their diploma. This is the second group of junior students to experience the two year Junior Graduation programme and it continues to go from strength to strength. Students are tracking their own academic achievement in each subject, identifying clear goals of what they hope to achieve and are also receiving academic counseling from subject teachers, form teachers and Deans. The feedback from the students has been of overwhelming support as they are enjoying the opportunity to strive for something that is tangible in the Junior School.

ASDAN Youth AWARDS 2012

In 2012 Zhane Symons and Delphia Pekigi-Pae successfully completed their ASDAN Platinum Award, becoming the fourth and fifth Mount Albert Grammar students to attain this Award. A Platinum award carries 20 Level 3 NCEA credits as well as the Platinum ASDAN certificate. Mount Albert Grammar is one of only a few schools who have students gaining this level of the Award.The ASDAN awards focus on developing the key competencies, so to gain this Award, the student is involved in independently planning, carrying out and recording their development in three different skills and knowledge modules. At the end of the year, Zhane and Delphia organized a Presentation Evening for invited guests to come and view their portfolios and listen to a presentation by each girl on their evaluation of their achievement in completing the Award challenges. Zhane presented an entertaining power point on her role as a leader in the Kapa Haka while Delphia’s presentation on the impact Cleopatra had on the world was lively and taught everyone how fascinating the leader had been.

To Southern Peru

This July will see two World Challenge teams from MAGS depart on a 28-day expedition to Southern Peru. The expedition offers a perfect blend of adventure, history and experiencing a different culture. It will also teach life skills, stretch comfort zones and expand minds outside the classroom. The 4-week itinerary fosters team and leadership skills and will be the culmination of 18 months of preparation, planning, fundraising and training.“Our expeditions to overseas destinations are typically demanding 4-week journeys through countries of breathtaking natural beauty. The challenge begins long before the journey starts, with a 10-20 month program of training, fundraising and research that provides the maximum educational impact and teaches students a great deal about responsibility and planning.” (World Challenge)After flying into Lima, the two teams will go their separate ways and follow their own 4-week itinerary. Each team will complete an acclimatisation trek and a main trek in addition to working on a voluntary project and, of course, have some time to rest and relax. Both teams will be visiting Machu Picchu, Cusco, Arequipa and Lake Titicaca among other destinations.Whilst in country, students will be responsible for all aspects of the trip such as organising accommodation, food, transport and maintaining the budget. This is a unique opportunity for them to take leadership roles and be in control of a month long expedition.Students completed a training weekend in March to practice working together, testing out equipment, learning about each other and what to expect during the expedition.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities designed to support the personal and social development of young people. It is undertaken in their own time in their chosen activities, with guidance from knowledgeable adults. Once the participant has fulfilled the requirements for each section, they qualify for the award. (For more information visit www.dofehillary.org.nz)There are four sections to complete – Service, Skill, Physical Recreation and Expedition. Students determine their own activities and complete them according to the set criteria. The list of activities is almost endless, allowing everyone to find something they enjoy and can participate in. The expedition section always seems to be the firm favourite. Recently, on the first wet weekend of the year, a group of 17 Silver students completed their expedition. They tramped and camped for three days and 35km through the Waitakere Ranges, enduring the wet, muddy conditions, some poor tracks but always maintained their positive approach! They even managed to get to the highest point in the ranges, starting from sea level, a feat in itself. After the arrival at Arataki, the sense of relief, accomplishment and exhilaration was immense. Congratulations to all those who completed this arduous trek.I must also congratulate Sophie Carter (2011) and Edward Duncan (2012) who have recently completed their Gold Award – an amazing feat. They will have a presentation at the Council House later in the year.

Anti Violence Message

On Monday 25th February, we had invited ‘iChoose’ from ICAP (International Committee of Artist for Peace). Year 9 students have greatly benefit from what they have offered. iChoose is an innovative anti-bullying project that combines education and entertainment to provide a powerful anti-violence message to students. Their project began with a 20 minute musical production, followed by a productive discussion and Q&A session. The production conveyed a strong message that “it is up to you” - we all have the power to choose and to be courageous in the face of peer-pressure, binge eating, racism, cyber-bullying and physical abuse. Many students had tears in their eyes and it ended with great feedback from the students as well as the teachers. For more information on ICAP, visit http://www.icapeace.org./

Every year In France there is a particular celebration called Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday). In the traditional Christian calendar, it marks the last day to enjoy meat and dairy products before the 40 day fasting time of Lent, before Easter. People make pancakes, or crêpes, which traditionally used up eggs, milk and flour. Naturally our senior French classes wanted to mark this festival as we did last year and thereby establish a Mount Albert Grammar tradition. So on February 16th, both Year 12 and 13 French classes, along with their teachers, Mrs Selaries and Ms Lynch, headed down to Les Pyrénées café to eat crêpes and chocolat chaud. The outing was declared very successful and Mrs Selaries was happy that all pupils ordered their meal in French.

In February and March 2013, our Japanese classes have been fortunate to welcome language assistant, Iroha Arakaki from Okinawa, Japan. The students are enjoying the opportunity to learn some interesting facts about Japan, as well as speaking to the assistant in Japanese, putting their new language skills to use straight away. We intend to have more Japanese assistants in future in order for students to make the most of this learning opportunity and to expand their horizon through learning the language and culture.

Exchange and Travel plans for 2013Heading to ChinaIf all goes to plan, there will be a group of senior pupils studying Chinese making their way to China for a whistle-stop 13 day tour of five major cities and many outstanding historical sites such as the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an.

First French exchange with Notre Dame de Sacré Coeur, ParisDuring the last three weeks of Term 2, mid – June, a group of French pupils from a private school in Paris called Notre-Dame de Sacré-Coeur, will be attending classes and living with families from among our senior French pupils. They will enjoy the two week holiday with their host family before heading back to France, with greatly improved English skills. Their goal is to speak English at all times, as this is an essential skill for their academic success in major French universities. Then, early December, our senior French pupils who have hosted the Parisians, will in turn be heading off to spend 5 weeks in France, 4 with their host families in Neuilly, Paris, both at school and enjoying a French Christmas and New Year, before finally doing a rapid tour of as much of France as possible before returning to Auckland, hopefully with their French greatly improved. There are many very excited people in our French classes at the moment who are trying to practice their French as much as possible.

Annual Prefect LockdownOn Thursday 18 April, 27 of MAGS prefects participated in the annual Prefect Lockdown. In previous years, the lockdown has been done to support charities such as World Vision and Red Cross but our chosen charity this year was Auckland City Mission.

We felt this was a fitting choice as poverty unfortunately is not just a reality in the third world but also exists in our own city to-day. This initiative, organised by the school’s Welfare committees required the prefects to go without food, electronics and shelter for 15+ hours whilst being locked outside in the school’s quad-rangle, with only the luxury of cardboard boxes to sleep on for one night. It wasn’t all doom and gloom though! Fortunately, the weather conditions were perfect and the prefects kept themselves well entertained with chalk, theatre sports games and sport com-petitions and so on, well into the night.

Our only major concern was when the Thursday night bagpipes class started practising by the hall! Leading up to this event, the prefects had to collect as many sponsors as they could with all their proceeds going towards Auckland City Mission. In total, they raised approximately $3200 which went to our school’s grand total of $3900!

So thank you to all who contributed and a special thanks to the following teachers, Mr Belson, Miss Bovaird and Miss Absolum who gave up their time to supervise the lockdown. The success of this event would not have been possible without your generosity.

English and Arts Block Opening After seven years of planning and reconstruction, the English and Arts Block has been completed and officially opened on Thursday 4 April by David Shearer, the MP for Mount Albert. The building can house 700 students at one time and offers a modern 21st Century environment for learning.

The opening was very well organised and enjoyed by many. The afternoon began with a blessing, followed by a walk through the building for all invited guests.

All staff from the school were invited to the opening in acknowledgement of the inconvenience and sacrifices that have been tolerated over the past several years. The event concluded with refreshments in the sculpture courtyard at the western end of the building.

Each year we remember the 200 Albertians who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the nation’s armed forces.

This year, we were priveleged to have the mother and two brothers of Lance Corporal Rory Malone as our special guests. Last year, Albertian Rory was killed in action in Afghanistan.The family presented the head-master with a framed photo, which will join those of the fallen placed on the walls of the Gamble Hall for the memorial service.

Following the ANZAC service, many of the guests at-tended the Old Old Boys’ Luncheon at School House. Ruby, as guest speaker, also spoke of her grandfather’s experiences during World War II during the service.

Outdoor Education

Year 13 Outdoor Education Year 13 Outdoor Education have certainly made the most of the settled weather with EOTC this term based around surfing, sea kayaking and high ropes. The surfing day trip was held at Piha Beach where the class experienced this dynamic activity in order to begin evaluating the role physical activity plays in influencing well-being, explain factors that influence participation, explain motivational factors that lead to people doing physical activity and to begin to recognize and explain barriers to physical activity. Thanks to New Zealand Surf and Snow Tours for their expertise and equipment. The sea kayaking expedition traversed the waters between St Heliers Bay, Browns Island, Motuihe Island and Motutapu Island. It provided students with a chance to again look at their motivational factors as well as focusing on safety management issues and strategies. Thanks to Auckland Canoe and Kayak for their ongoing support of Outdoor Education at Mount Albert Grammar School. The AdventureWorks Challenge Course at Unitec was again busy this term with Year 13 students learning how to facilitate the high elements. They then returned to school and led our Year 10 Outdoor Education students through a series of Adventure Based Learning activities before leading them through a selection of high rope elements.

Year 12 Outdoor Education

Year 12 Outdoor Education travelled by bus and then charter boat to the Poor Knights Islands off the coast of Tutukaka. Here they snorkeled, kayaked and paddle boarded along a small section of one of the islands. The water was a comfortable temperature and provided students with world class viewing of marine life. Students were focusing on risk management from strategies identified in class prior to the trip and throughout the day. The two classes then spent four days experiencing the AdventureWorks Challenge course at Unitec with a focus on personal development and group work.

Year 11 PE Performance Outdoor Education Year 11 PE Performance Outdoor Education has been introduced at MAGS this year with one class experiencing our traditional level one PE Performance programme with an outdoor pursuit twist. This class also went to Piha to learn to surf with a focus on developing an understanding of societal influences on physical activity and the implications for themselves and for others. It also allowed students to demonstrate responsible behaviour during an outdoor education activity. The focus then turned to how the body functions in activity. After learning about anatomy, they spent a day sea kayaking at Whangaparoa Pennisula. This EOTC supplemented what was learnt and demonstrated on the surfing day plus helped to develop an in-depth understanding of how the body functions, specifically related to sea kayaking.

Year 10 Outdoor Education Year 10 Outdoor Education consists of five classes this year. After spending time in both the classroom and pool focusing on surf survival, our students were taken to Piha Beach to practise their knowledge in a real life environment. Students were educated by Surf Lifesavers, provided with a tour of a surf lifesaving club, given the opportunity to spot rips and then the chance to practise rescues in surf. Our Year 10 students were then led through some Adventure Based Learning activities by our Year 13 students at school and then again at the AdventureWorks Challenge Course at Unitec. Visual Arts On Monday the 15th of April Alexis Neal came into school to work with the Visual Arts students. Alexis Neal’s own work spans a wide range of media from Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking. In her lunchtime talk she spoke about the challenges artists face today, her experiences in gaining her Masters degree in London and about her art making practice. In a series of workshops with a selected group of year 11 and year 13 art students, Alexis engaged them in producing a series of mixed media prints. This exposed students to new ways of working and also enabled them to work in the new specialist printmaking workshop that has opened in the our renovated facilities.

Ahurangi Festival Project

On Sunday the 14th of April a group of motivated Visual Arts students collaborated with Auckland City Council and the Albert Eden Local Board to create a series of five sculptures for the Ahurangi Festival. The sculptures utilized recycled materials and were prepared in school over many lunchtimes.This inaugural event showcased the Meola creek, by focusing on its qualities as a precious natural resource and the important physical connection the creek creates between neighbouring communities.Ahurangi is the name used for the upper part of Meola Creek, and means ‘coming from the skies’. During the walk, ecologists and volunteers from STEPS provided brief talks on the creek and surrounds, while engaging with the sculpture series, which explored themes of recycling, re-using and cohabiting with our environment.

Small GalleryTwo exhibitions were mounted in Term 1 in the new Small Gallery. A stunning display of Year11 wet and dry media drawings and sketches gained a lot of attention and admiration. The second exhibition of selected Year 12 wet media sketches and paintings has had students going out of their way to check out the new art work. Thanks to the Curatorial Team under the guidance of Shannon Ackerman.

Congratulations Year 9 and 10 Art students recently entered the Create Me! Cartoon Character Competition from Media Design School. A total of 412 entries were collected from around New Zealand and with such tough competition it was difficult to select a winner. A total of 16 finalists were chosen and highly commended awards were given to an additional 30 students.The following students from Mount Albert Grammar were selected as finalists: Noah Foster, Lauren Middleton, William Lever, Johnson Tigafua and an Unnamed Ballerina entry. The following students gained highly commended:Ausger Pale Jordan A Faaiu and James Malone. Congratulations to these students and all those who worked hard on their entries.

Keen installation artists at the Meola Creek Site Upcoming First folio board showThis year the year 13 visual art students will be exhibiting their progress on a website which can be accessed by the public. The first online exhibition will display their completed first of three folio boards. This will give parents and family the opportunity to see their students’ work alongside the rest of the students in their year taking the subject. Parents will be emailed the website address when it is up and running. A live link will also be put on the school website so keep an eye out for it so you can see the artistic talent of the students emerging from MAGS senior school this year.


T H E A R T S

Performing Arts Dance2013 sees dance being introduced at year nine with selected students being part of the Dance Academy. Because of a full programme and timetabling issues the academy is being held before school each Tuesday and I am delighted at the consistent 100% attendance and enthusiasm brought each week by the 27 students who make up the class. Dance students had considerable sucess in the 2012 NCEA results, with a significant improvement in the numbers achieving a Merit and Excellence endorsement, particularly at Level 1 and Level 3.

NEVER ENDING STORIES CONCERTThis concert was held at Centennial theatre at AGS in the last week of term one and featured work for assessment from all levels of Dance. Year nine and ten and NCEA 1 students had been working with guest teachers during term one learning routines to present at the concert. The tutors were very happy at the standard achieved overall and really enjoyed working with these year groups. Year 11, 12 and 13 students were being assessed on their choreographies based on Myths and Legends and again this year the standard was high.

ARTS PREFECTS AND ARTS COMMITTEE Four Arts prefects have been chosen this year – one to represent each of the Arts Departments. These are Brosnan Ackerman (Music/Media) Olivia Cochrane (Dance/Culture) Daniel Nisbet (Drama and Speech) and Matt James (Visual Arts). The prefects have their own committees made up of Art leaders and representatives from each year level.The Arts committee has already made big inroads into making the Arts more visible and accessible to the students and the wider community and did an outstanding job of managing all aspects of the Cultural concerts. The Performing Arts are also more visible during the school week with lunchtime performances being held in the quad every Friday during the first term.

CULTURAL CONCERT The Cultural concert, A Search For Unity, was held at the Dorothy Winstone Theatre, at Auckland Girls’ Grammar and featured performances from Samoan, Cook Island, Nuiean Tongan, Kapa Haka, Indian and Chinese groups. The event attracted a crowd of over 600 people, and all agreed that the performers all gave outstanding performances.

MAGS MEGA DANCE CREW MAGS Mega Dance Crew trained Sundays and all the first week of the holidays for the SDNZ championships that were held in Auckland. While the team did not place this year it was a very close competition and the MAGS team gave a fantastic performance much appreciated by the 800 strong crowd. Congratulations to leaders Brosnan Ackerman, Michael James, Riley Bourne and Jamie Foster for their great leadership of this group of 30 students.

DramaTerm One has been busy in the Drama Department. Year 13 have been rehearsing their class production, Salome, with performances on 10 and 11 April. The production included interdisciplinary collaboration, with a student from Dance choreographing the opening scene. It also featured year 11 drama students singing a section of the text and in supporting roles as soldiers. One year 11 student understudied for the role of Salome. The Technology Department supported the performance by constructing the soldiers’ shields.

Year 12 have completed two Achievement Standards. One was on Epic Theatre form, which required them to perform a scene in the style of Bertolt Brecht. Their second assessment was to devise a performance based on a natural disaster.Year 11 have completed two Achievement Standards. The first exploring the theatre form of Clowning and the second working with a script by New Zealand playwright Jo Randerson.

Years 9 and 10 have both rehearsed and performed scenes from Shakespeare. The national Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Competition had seven groups competing from MAGS.

Music This year has started with lots of music lessons and activities offered. The itinerant music teachers have had a huge intake of new students this year.

Mr Su’a is working with various choirs towards various competitions and public performances. He has worked with all the cultural groups towards their annual concert at Auckland Girls’ Grammar School in Week 8.

Mrs Moon is working with the orchestra towards the annual Term 2 concert and KBB festival. Mrs Moon is also involved with the various rock bands who are planning to compete at the RockQuest, and she is assisting Mrs Snape with the Chamber Group competition.

Keen music students are giving live performances in the E block Quad every Friday lunchtime to very appreciative audiences. Mr. Sinclair is working with our Jazz Band and they will soon be ready to perform. They are also working towards the annual concert and KBB competition

Our jazz combo will perform in the first weekend of the school holidays in the fundraising efforts for the Camellia house refuge, supported by the Soroptomist International.

AthleticsNew Zealand Secondary Schools’ Athletic ChampionshipsThe 40th New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Track and Field meeting was held at the Caledonian Ground, Logan Park, Dunedin and the 38th Road Race Championships was run around the perimeter of the Forsyth Barr Stadium on the weekend of 8-9 December 2012. The smaller team of 16 athletes included track, field and road race competitors and returned to Auckland having won two bronze medals during the weekend by Senior Girl Jamie Sowter in the Open Girls’ 300m Hurdles and Niven Longopoa in the Junior Boys’ 100m Hurdles. This was the last appearance in the school colours for Athletics Captains Tayla Broomfield and Sean Pugh and fellow year 13 athletes Matthew Battley, Natalie Booth, Negin Shademan, Jamie Sowter and Kieran Woods. There were a number of athletes who recorded personal best performances over the weekend and three athletes were very unlucky to miss out on podium finishes: Niven Longopoa, Celine Pearn and Kilian Segers. The Senior Girls’ 4 x 100m Relay team of Tayla Broomfield, Jamie Sowter, Caitlin Donaldson and Negin Shademan finished 4th, also missing out on a medal in 2012.

School Athletic ChampionshipsThe School Athletic Championship meeting was held at the Douglas Track, Trusts Stadium, Waitakere on Thursday 14 February 2013. Two days earlier on Tuesday 12 February the 3000m and Triple Jump finals were held, also at the Douglas Track. The weather in 2013 was a lot kinder than in 2012 and saw nine records being broken and one new record being set in the Intermediate Girls’ Shot Put because there has been a change in the weight of the shot put in this age group. Senior Boy, Aaron Booth, had an outstanding championship, setting records in both the 110m hurdles and high jump. The most significant was the high jump, raising the bar another six centimetres, from Sammy Ho’s 1.79m mark set in 2007, to 1.85m. Intermediate Boys’ records were set in the fiercely competitive shot put where Christopher Lu’au produced a personal best effort of 14.30m eclipsing Albert Nikoro’s 2010 record by just one centimetre. Emil Pitman lost his second hurdles record during the day when Niven Longopoa knocked 0.07 seconds off the 100m hurdles time

to record 14.12. Two Intermediate Girls’ records were set by Elizabeth Lyon and Celine Pearn, with Lyon taking over five seconds off the 3000m time set by Nina Ives in 2008 and Pearn setting a new mark in the 400m of 1:01.38 taking 0.29 seconds off Destiny Grace’s record set last year. Janet Stewart set a new record for the shot put using the 3kg implement of 12.14m. Three Junior Girls’ records were set in the 3000m, 70m Hurdles and Javelin. Nicole Kearney smashed the 3000m record by over 28 seconds to set a new mark of 12:17.25, removing Nina Ives second record of the meeting over the 3000m distance, which was set in 2007. Jamie Sowter’s 70m Hurdles record set in 2009, was beaten by Kodi Barlow in a new record time of 12.37 and Lausapai Nikoro set a new mark in the Javelin, adding 89cms to Gillian Wills’ record set in 2007, with a distance of 19.97m.

Western Zone Athletics Qualifying MeetingA team of 69 athletes travelled to the Douglas Track at the Trusts Stadium, Waitakere, for the Western Zone Athletics Qualifying Meeting on Wednesday 27 February. There were many highlights throughout the day including titles in sprint, hurdles, middle and long distance track events combined with throw and jump events, showing the diversity of the talent of the athletes performing who picked up a total of 37 titles. The individual performances on the track and in the field were matched at the conclusion of the meeting when all eight-relay teams qualified through to the Greater Auckland Athletics Championships. All witnessed the team spirit when the grandstand erupted with the MAGS team cheering on their relay runners to victory. The performance of the day came with the winning jump by Senior Boy Cameron Emerson in the Triple Jump, where he recorded a massive 13.70m jump, which would rank him 2nd in the Junior Men (U20) age group and 1st in the Youth Men (U18) age group on the Athletics New Zealand National ranking list for the 2012-2013 season. Senior Boy Aaron Booth continued his good high jumping season in an excellent competition, clearing a personal best height of 1.95m to finish second and he won the 110m Hurdles.

Greater Auckland Athletic ChampionshipsThis meeting was held on Tuesday 26 March at the Towers Track, Mt Smart Stadium, which was a week later than usual due to the Easter holiday break occurring in term time this year. Six athletes competed at King’s College the following day in the 3000m and Open Boys’ and Girls’ 300m Hurdles events.A team of 54 athletes participated in the full range of athletic events during the two days winning a total of 30 medals, which included nine titles, 12 silver medals and nine bronze

This term the MAGS Premier Canoe Polo team MAGS A has been active. This culminated with an assault on the National New Zealand Schools’ Canoe Polo Championships in Feilding at the end of the March.The retention of the Auckland Schools’ Championship at the end of last year gave the team qualification to the regional championships in Hamilton on March 9th. . The MAGS team won convincingly. Having qualified they traveled to Fielding for the National Championships on 22- 24 March. There were high expectations with the results of the 6 games of 2 losses, one draw and 3 wins however this was not enough to progress to the finals. The overall result was 5th. The team aquitted themselves well and put in their best performance at Nationals so far. Mention must be made of the great effort and expertise put in by our superb coach Mr. Andrew Candy and Manager Henry Ludlam and the terrific support of the team’s parents. We now look forward to a new season starting in term 2 and are looking for new players who would like to participate in this exciting and dynamic sport. It is open to all boys and girls of all ages and full expert training is given.

Condor Sevens 2012The Mount Albert Grammar School team qualified through the regional competitions some months ago for the 26th Condor 7s tournament alongside 16 other schools from throughout New Zealand.The national competition was held this year at Kelston Boys’ High School, with three fields playing continuously. For the first time, girls’ teams also made an appearance - with the prospect of national representation at the Olympics in Rio in

2016. Congratulations to Brody Lam and Aaron McLelland who were both selected in the tournament team.The boys played some outstanding sevens during pool play and cruised through to the ¼ finals with 3 big wins. The team scored great team tries and backed that up with a strong defensive effort.Palmerston North Boys’ High School were a tough opposition in the ¼ final and they hit the lead early. MAGS had to come from behind in the second half and scored two late tries to win a tight game 24 – 17.The semi final was a rematch of the Auckland final with AGS. MAGS attacked the line early but could not score and were held out by outstanding defence. Against the run of play AGS scored a long-range kick and chase try to lead 0 -7. With the score at 12 – 14 to AGS in the second half MAGS had to do something special to win. Aaron McLelland stepped up on the wing and scored a fantastic solo try to put MAGS in front. Final score was 19 – 14 to MAGS. The final was versus West Auckland rivals and 2011 Condor Champions Kelston. The 1st half was very close and both teams scored two tries each. At 10 -14 to Kelston at half time it was still any team’s game. However, Kelston just stepped up a gear in the second half and scored 3 tries back to back, which put the game out of reach. Congratulations to the boys for a fine effort throughout the whole sevens programme. Thank you to Rocky Khan for giving up his time to coach the team, he did a fantastic job building this team and finishing second in New Zealand was a great result.

BaseballMAGS entered the Auckland Secondary Schools’ Baseball competition for the first time and won it by beating One Tree Hill College in the final 14-6. They never lost a game in the whole competition.

Cricket First XI: RH Maryatt Cup Champions 2013. Auckland Gillette Cup Champions 2013.The 1st XI of 2013 has so far, conquered all before them. In a stellar season, they are unbeaten in all competitions, with eight One-Day victories, including two finals and two, Two-Day victories.They have already won two Auckland Championships in 2013 and are leading in the Two- Day Championship, going in to the winter break.The One-Day Championship, (R.H Maryatt Cup) was secured with victories over Avondale College, St Kentigerns College, McLeans College, Kelston BHS and Auckland GS (by net average runs) and a comprehensive victory in the final against Westlake BHS. (MAGS 210/7 WBHS 76 all out).The Auckland Gillette Cup competition with over 30 Auckland schools entered, was secured with a run-away victory over Liston College and a comprehensive victory in the final against Auckland GS. (MAGS 214/8, AGS 119 all out). The team will join five others from the other Major Associations around the country, at Lincoln, Christchurch in December, to contest the National Gillette Cup finals.In the Two-Day Championship we have a first innings win against Sacred Heart College and an outright victory over Rosmini College to take a four-point lead into Term Four.While Cricket lends itself to statistics and individual records, it is the teamwork and leadership of this unit that has brought the stellar results. The 2nd XI’s results have been mixed and highlighted by a number of close games. The season started slowly before the team gained momentum to reach the top 4. In the top 4 play-off games MAGS narrowly missed out on first innings points to both AGS 2nd XI and Liston 1st XI. Highlights included Zane Koch collecting scores of 71, 71 and (5-41). Other notable performances throughout term one included Hoani Taylor 5/29, Brahmneet Singh 52, and Jericho Nicodemus claiming 5/72. Mr Sorrensen, in his first year of teaching, brings cricket knowledge and enthusiasm to his role as coach of this team.

could have gone either way. The best batting performance was from Jordan Teina with 71 against Auckland Grammar School. Other notable batting efforts were Franco du Preez’s 46, against Liston College and Ethan Duffin’s 42, against St Kentigern College. This team is very fortunate to be managed by Ms Drew.Junior A (year 9)Playing against year 9 & Year 10 composite teams, our Year 9 Junior A side has done extremely well in the first half of the season by winning four out of their five matches. They saw off Mt. Roskill Grammar, Liston College, Auckland Grammar and Kelston BHS. This all bodes well for the final half of the season starting in term 4. Notable performances include; Andrew Munro’s 65* against Liston, Eamon Campbell’s 49* against KBHS, Brodie Fogarty’s five wickets for two runs against Liston, and Lewis Whitta’s accurate bowling claiming eight wickets and going for only 2.15 runs an over for the season. Mr Simon Fogarty is outstanding in the role of manager of this team and we thank him for his contribution to MAGS cricket.Senior A (3rd XI)The Senior A team has been well lead by Matt Day. They have a 3 win 3 loss record going into the winter break. Matt has also shown the way with the bat with scores of 51, 84, 64* and 52 with good help from Lawrence De Zoysa getting a 64, Rahiri Clarke 60 vs Dilworth and Zac King a fine 106* vs Onehunga HS. Leon Gibson has the best bowling figures of 4/19 off 4 overs. Mr Bruce Gibson has brought his experience to the management of the team and they are grateful for his assistance. Colts XIThe Colts qualified in second place in their pool and continue to make good progress as a competitive unit. Fraser Campbell is by far the leading run scorer and is having a great season.

He has been backed by a couple of good scores from Max Thompson, Katene Clarke and Jack Henderson. Mr Wagener continues to put in many hours to assist these boys.

Girls 1st XIThe glorious summer weather meant that for the first season in many years the girls played all their scheduled fixtures in what was a very competitive Premier Grade. Highlights for the Girls’ team, lead by Miss Hobbs and Miss Jagiello, have been victories over Diocesan and Baradene. Hannah Ward has the individual high score of 42 but the real statistical highlight was from the bowling of Ella Neighbours. She attained the great figures of 6/11 from 4 overs which included the astonishing feat of a double hat-trick (four wickets in four consecutive deliveries), all bowled!

NZSS Futsal Champs

For the first time MAGS, under the guidance of Director of Girls’ Football Paul Marshall, sent a futsal team to the NZSS Champs which were held in Wellington on 21-22 March 2013.The team of 12 girls were outstanding, not losing one game and winning the final 10-0.Congratulations to the girls who trained hard for this event and thanks to Mr Marshall and our physio Natalie Brunger who helped with the team while they were away.

OrienteeringThe 50 strong Orienteering Team competed in the 6-race Central Zone Summer Sprint Series and MAGS was proud of very good results.The Senior Boys have on average had 5 competitors in the top 10 places each week. At the end of the 6 rounds and going into the Finals particular congratulations go to Y13’s Jarrod Wilson (2nd place) and Sam Nicholson (4th place). Tim Sinclair and Senior Girl Alexandra Dean also finished in the top 10.

Intermediate Girls is a competitive group of both experienced runners and beginners with Celia Hext, Alex Thompson and Alexandra Chaptynova consistently being the best of the MAGS Team.Junior Girls were an enthusiastic group of mainly beginners who improved every week.Congratulations to Y9 Theresa Boyd on attaining a 4th placing overall. Junior Boy Isaac Coupe has also finished in the top 10 for his category.MAGS was proud to have had 16 students qualify for the Auckland Sprint Series Final on April 6th where they competed against orienteers from the North-Western and Central Zones. RowingCAMBRIDGE TOWN CUP REGATTA, January 25-27. A win in the Boys’ Under-18 single scull for prefect Grayson Dauphin made history for MAGS at the Cambridge Town Cup Regatta at Lake Karapiro over Anniversary Weekend. It was the rowing squad’s first win in an A-final since it was reformed fours ago after a break of nearly 30 years. Grayson is a foundation member of the new squad and his win was well-earned after four years of dedicated training. Grayson and the rest of the Magsrow squad rowed in the colours of our affiliate club, West End, which is also the club of Olympic gold medal single sculler Mahe Drysdale and Olympic medallist Juliette Haigh.Other crews put in a strong showing over the weekend with A finals for the Boys’ U16 four, Boys’ U16 eight, Girls’ U16 double and the Girls’ U16 eight, which included two MAGS girls among others from West End. The Boys’ U15 four and Girls’ Under 16 quad made B finals, and it was pleasing to see our two novice girls this season, Abigail Marshall and Kate Wislang, make their first final in the Women’s Novice double. Head rowing coach Will Maling says the squad is showing “incredible success” after only four years against schools with much more established and better resourced programmes. Grayson was also the First XI hockey goalkeeper last winter, proving that students can combine a winter code with success in rowing.

Mr Maling noted regarding the U16 Girls’ double of Marnina Hyland and Charlotte Pearce, “Their success as a double is a reflection of the strong bond and friendship that develops

between rowers,” says Mr Maling. “Their success is significant for the girls’ programme and we’re focused on bringing on board a large number of novice girls over the next few months.”The boys’ U16 eight are looking very fast; expectations are high not just for this season but also for a strong first eight in 2014. Keen students can also talk to the teacher in charge of rowing, Ben Grace.

Maadi Cup The national champs, also known as the Maadi Cup after the trophy awarded to the winning Boys’ Under-18 Eight, is the largest secondary school sporting event in the southern hemisphere. This year saw more than 2000 athletes represent 120 schools from throughout the country. MAGSROW selected 17 athletes from our 42-strong squad to represent the school in this toughest of arenas. We had crews that made A finals, the boys’ under-18 pair, the boys’ under-17 four, the boys’ under-16 four and under-18 single sculler Grayson Dauphin. This is the highlight for secondary school rowers and the 17 MAGSROW students will never forget the experience of going to their first Maadi Cup.

The team was lead by two dedicated and exceptional year 13 captains; Reagan Bourgeois and Jessica Munro. They took over the responsibility of coach while the team coach was away and their leadership skills and support for their team was outstanding. On Monday 18th to Friday 22nd March the team went to the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Division 1 National Tournament at Meadowlands Reserve. The girls played as a team and with MAGS pride and came a pleasing 5th place. We had a close and exciting tiebreaker game against Hillmorton High School, which we won as well as winning two games by the mercy rule.

Courtney was a top pitcher at the tournament and Maia one of our most junior players continued to surprise us with her all round ability. Kalisha, despite being small, could pick the team up with her loud and energetic cheers. A big thank-you to Janette McLeod for coaching the girls’ softball for the past four years. We couldn’t have done it without you.

The Premier Boys’ Softball team played six games to take out the Auckland Championship title, beating St Peters’ in the final 5-2. This result qualified the team for the NZ Secondary Schools’ tournament held 18th March – 22 March at Meadowlands Howick. During that week the team played nine games to go through the tournament unbeaten and win against Nelson College in the final 3-1. A fantastic effort.A number of players were named in the tournament team, with both of our pitchers Liam Twigden (Top Pitcher) and Seth Bourgeois being recognized and rewarded for their efforts for the week.

Special thanks to Stu Kinghorn for his fantastic coaching of this team, Toni Bennett for her awesome management and all the parents who helped with transport and logistics.

Touch After finishing in second place at the Central Zone TouchCompetition, the MAGS Mixed Touch team turned their sights to the National Qualifying Tournament held on 23 March for which they had high expectations.The team played strongly making it to the final with Alfriston College against which they had had their only loss in the round robin. Unfortunately, the outcome was to be the same, losing 5-9. However, the second place was a good result for this talented team finishing in the top half of the country and qualifying for Nationals at the end of the year. Big thanks must go to the coaches George Thompson and Rod Walker who gave up their time to work hard with the team as well as Manager, Maggie Mita, who never missed a beat. Waka AmaFor the first time a Mount Albert Grammar School student and House Boy, Waimana Riedlinger-Kapa (Yr10), entered the National Secondary School Waka Ama Championships which were held on Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake) in Rotorua, on the 19th and 20th March. Waimana made it into the finals out of 40 competitors and came in a respectable 5th place in the U16 Boys’ W1 250m event.

WaterpoloThe Premier Girls’ Waterpolo team has been competitive this term in spite of losing many Year 13 players last year. They have continued to play in the Premier League and have strongly contested the majority of their games.The team entered the North Island Division 2 competition and enjoyed many wins. They came second with their only loss being to Carmel College in the round robin and the final with the score being 4-5.The team continues to develop and looks forward to competing in the Division 2 Nationals in Hamilton during the holidays. Thanks to Janette Mcleod for her tireless efforts in managing this team.

ASB Farm –Mount Albert Grammar School Lease Renewal

On Tuesday 26 March 2013 a special celebration was held at Alberton House for the renewal of the farm lease at Mount Albert Grammar School for the next 99 years by the ASB Bank.Many attended the function on a glorious day, with School Board members, ASB Bank representatives, Local Albert-Eden council members, Albertian Association Executives, Albertians, Farm management, past and present staff and students.Following the Headmaster’s welcome, the Board Chair, Greg Moyle, gave the following response.

It was possibly in this room, but certainly in this house, that the registered proprietor of the farm land, Mrs Winifred Kerr-Taylor, and her two younger sisters Mildred and Muriel met with representatives from the New Zealand Institute of Horticultural in 1932 to discuss the establishment of an educational facility to provide skill learning for unemployed youth.The Kerr-Taylor family have a long history of philanthropic giving to the community.In 1872 Allan Kerr-Taylor gifted an acre of land in New North Road, Mt Albert, for the St Lukes Anglican Church. The present site of Mount Albert Grammar was once part of the Kerr-Taylor

Farm. Shortly after the establishment of the School Farm, six and one half acres were given to Mt Albert Borough Council for the creation of the present Fergusson Avenue Reserve. In 1972, Miss Muriel Kerr-Taylor bequeathed the Alberton Homestead to the NZ Historic Places Trust.The Headmaster of the “local” school MAGS, Mr Gamble was probably present as it was sensible that the School was involved due to the proximity of the land which adjoined the school property.1932 was a difficult time in NZ, as it was the great global depression and ‘money’ was in short supply. The Kerr-Taylor Family needed to be paid something for the land they were able to make available, but neither the School nor the Ministry of Education had the financial resources to pay for the land.

Fortunately the local Community Trustee Bank, the Auckland Savings Bank, was prepared to fund the purchase, as in those days Trustee Banks, as charitable institutions, distributed profits into their local community. However the problem was that the Savings Bank could not ‘own’ property other than for its own business purposes. Again fortunately a way forward was found whereby an Act of Parliament was promoted and passed into legislation which enabled the Savings Bank to be the ‘legal’ owner of the land with a lease back to the School. The initial payment was £2000, £1600 for the 20 acres and 61/10th perches and £400 for buildings.Over the last 80 years the relationship between the School and the ASB Bank (a far different organisation that it was in 1932) has continued. We still ‘bank’ with the ASB, the Bank continues to support the School and the Farm. In 1955 the Bank funded £500 for general building improvements, in 1956 £150 for tidying fences for the Duke of Edinburgh’s visit, a further £400 also in 1956 for the establishment of a piggery and $20,000 in 1970 for a rebuilding scheme. This last sum

In conclusion I would like to thank the many people who have been involved in allowing us to celebrate the continued existence of the MAGS Farm at Mount Albert Grammar School. In particular I would like to thank John Stackpoole, Greg Taylor, Bernie Allen, Ralph Norris, Barbara Chapman and Graham Edwards.

It was about 2 years ago that we realised that the lease of the Farm was coming to an end.I met with the then CEO of ASB Bank Charles Pink and along with Peter Thorp began the conversation that ended with the agreement we celebrate today. With the renewal of the lease on the favourable terms by the Bank, the School can now plan ahead with a level of certainty. It is the intention of the Board of Trustees and the School to adopt an “Academy” approach to the study of Agriculture and Horticulture at MAGS. This will necessitate increased and improved teaching space to accommodate the increasing numbers of students who are and will be attracted to these courses.Historically and in my day ‘the farm boys’ were from outside the Auckland District and were the backbone of the School Boarding House, now known as School House. However students on the Farm are now both boys and girls, most of whom are day pupils living locally. This year we have begun a programme which will allow every year 9 student to experience the Farm by attending introductory courses on agriculture, animal husbandry and horticulture. This was not something that occurred in my day, as the Farm was ‘off limits’ to day boys unless they were part of the Agriculture course.The School will continue to promote the Farm to its wider community, with ‘open days’ and regular visit from primary and intermediate schools. The Farm will also allow the School to promote ‘sustainability’ within its community by the use of organic farming and horticultural practices, composting, using worm farms and recycling organic material.

On Monday 25 February, at the Year 11 and 12 Assembly, Albertian, Carl Perry, was presented with the inaugural Mount Albert Grammar School Foundation Teacher Training Scholarship by Foundation Trustee, former Headmaster and Albertian, Greg Taylor.

Greg Taylor’s Speech: “Staff, students and special guests, it is my pleasure to be here this afternoon to take part in this significant award ceremony.As Mr Burden has noted, I am one of the Albertian trustees of the Mount Albert Grammar School Foundation, a body set up to provide ongoing financial security for the School as it moves forward. Indeed, our immediate goal is to increase significantly the Foundation’s capital base over the next 10 years. This scholarship is one of the Foundation’s initiatives, one which recognises the place tradition and quality teaching play in the life of MAGS. If an ex-pupil returns as a teacher, the School as a whole is enriched by having someone join the staff who has an understanding of the School, forged by spending 5 or so years sitting on the same seats, in the same classrooms, playing on the same sports fields and possibly taught by the same teachers as you. In return, the teacher has that special feeling that comes from putting effort into the future of an institution which played such an important role in shaping his/her own life.I have to admit that, for me, coming back to MAGS as Headmaster was exciting, but also humbling and a little strange. Although I had left at the end of 1964, when I returned in 1988 there were still 5 teachers who had been on the staff during my time at School. One of them, Mr Murphy, is still here. When I was at school, teachers did not have Christian names of which we as students were aware: instead I was taught by “Weka” King, “Dad” Weir, “Butch” Brown, “Horse” Hemus, “Mouse” Newman and “Tooth” Mitchell, to name but a few. As you can see, these nicknames were less than kind and there was a pattern to them – they tended to focus on a particular physical aspect of each teacher. As Headmaster, meeting them in a social context, it was hard all of a sudden to remember that “Tooth” was actually Bill, “Horse” was Ron, “Butch” was Goldie and so on. And to find, in fact, that they were “normal” people, warm and friendly, with interesting personalities and hugely entertaining stories to tell about me and my contemporaries.It has been suggested that Carl’s life is beginning to parallel mine and in several respects that is true: our time as pupils at MAGS, our work in the teaching field prior to completing our formal teacher training, and returning on to the staff of Mount Albert Grammar School, except in my case it was as Headmaster. It may take Carl a littler longer if he is planning to replace Mr Burden.

Dr Alan Bollard (1964-1968)Dr Alan Bollard, former Governor of the Reserve bank, was created a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to the State.Before his ten years as Governor, Dr Bollard spent four years as Secretary to the Treasury. He came to that position from four years as Chairman of the Commerce Commission.He has left for Singapore where he is the new Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat.

Hon George Hawkins (1960-1963)The Hon George Hawkins was created a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order (QSO) for Services as a Member of Parliament.Mr Hawkins was elected Mayor of Papakura in 1983 and held that position until 1992 even though he had been elected MP for Manurewa in 1990. In all he was elected seven times to Parliament and served in the Labour cabinet as Minister of Police and then as Minister of Internal Affairs.He stepped down from Parliament in 2011 and stood for the Manurewa Local Board of the new Auckland Council. As usual, he was elected.

So, it is with great pleasure that on behalf of my fellow trustees I ask Carl Perry to step forward as the inaugural recipient of the Mount Albert Grammar School Foundation Teacher Training Scholarship.”

Chris Sinclair (1973 -1976)Chris Sinclair is a Chef at Tony’s restaurant in Henderson. He currently has a MAGS student from the gateway programme working alongside him doing work experience.

Simon Mercep (1973-1977)Simon visited the school on 8 March 2013. He is currently the co-presenter of Radio New Zealand National’s Morning Report and is in his third year. He is based in Auckland. Prior to this Simon was at TVNZ he was on Fair Go and a correspondent on Current Affairs.

Aaron Olesen (2004-2007), Scott Olesen (2004-2007), Scott McPherson (2008-2012), Nina Hutchinson (2004-2008) All of these students were Agricultural students when they attended Mount Albert Grammar School. They all attended the function that was held at Alberton House on 26 March 2013 to celebrate the renewal of the ASB and Mount Albert Grammar Farm Lease Renewal.

MAGS FOUNDATION [incorporating the MAGS Golden Jubilee Trust]

The MAGS Foundation is very pleased to have secured the appointment of Tim Kay to the position of Director of Advancement. Tim was an outstanding candidate for the position ,with an established career in this field. He is moving from a similar position at King’s College and was attracted by the MAGS culture and the greenfields element to this position. In fact Tim was quite staggered to learn of the number of high-profile New Zealanders who have, per angusta ad augusta, passed through the school. It is perhaps a blight on the MAGS landscape that so much excellence has passed under the radar. MAGS has a superb tradition of achievement over its 90 year history. The Foundation has for some time recognised that the huge goodwill of the MAGS ex-pupils, parents and stakeholders is under-utilised and needs harnessing to satisfy both those supporters and the School. Somewhat akin to an All Blacks Supporters Club – people and organisations wanting to be involved but no infrastructure to assist. The setting up of a fully-professional Foundation Development Office should fulfil this need. The beneficiaries will be the MAGS students and our future society.We encourage the MAGS community of the 21st century to get involved and give back to the school to supplement the efforts of last century’s Albertians. Alan Burton and I started as Junior Housemasters in the gloomy old ruin of 807 New North Road in 1963 and, as Rob ‘Bowls’ Gardiner reported in the The Albertian of that year, “…to complete the complement of assistant housemasters is added the silent figure of Mr White to whom respect is given when it is remembered that ‘a still tongue indicateth a wise head’.”

Those who knew Kel didn’t find him silent, but then living with the logorrheaic Burton for three years would be enough encouragement to teach anyone the value of verbal economy. One of the survival arts of the Junior Housemaster business is to use whatever you’ve got to pretend that you’re in charge – we were well taught by our mentor Ron Hemus - and what Kel used to great effect was his basilisks stare. He didn’t need to say much – with weakening knees and quavering voice, many a petty villain conferred all under his gimlet gaze. They weren’t able to see the twinkle in those eyes or the suppressed boyish grin. We relied on him. 2013 Microsoft Imagine Cup New Zealand Success

The finals of the Imagine Cup New Zealand, which is a competition where participating teams use Microsoft Technology to build and develop innovate and world-changing applications. Entry is open to current or recently graduated students. There are three categories - World Citizenship, Games and Innovation. The InfinityTek team consisted of four university students from Auckland, two whom were past students from Mount Albert Grammar School.Daniel Xu (2003-2007) and Jacky Zhen (2002-2004) are half of the group InfinityTek, whom won the World Citizenship category and overall prize with their ‘UVSense’ product. Jason Lau (2004-2008), Tobias Sveaas (2004-2008) and Zain Ali (2004-2008) are team QuakeTown, who took out the Games category. Both teams received $6000 for their category wins, and team InfinityTek will travel to St Petersberg to represent New Zealand in the global Imagine Cup finals later this year. We wish Daniel and Jackie every success when they travel to Russia in July to compete with the rest of the world

The IDENTITY DANCE CREW led by Albertian Joshua Cesan (2006–2010) won the NZ Dance championships held in Auckland on the 26th and 27th April.The 8 man crew also has two other members who are Albertians Andrew Cesan(2005–2008 and Cameron Cranston (2007–2011). The finals of this NZ competition were attended by a huge crowd of 2400 people . IDENTITY will now head to Las Vegas in August to represent NZ in the Hip Hop world championships which this year has representatives from 47 countries.

Well maybe. Certainly many people did Latin then and over at school Kel was Bill Mitchell’s apprentice. Back at the House he spent endless hours correcting both Latin and French proses and helping House Boys come to grips with those languages.Kel brought the same dedication to coaching the 3As and with the same sort of results. In the three years we lived together, his team was second in 1963 and winners in 1964 and 1965. He had the same sort of success in later years.Many boys knew that he had been in the First XV in 1956, but everyone knew that the hurdles record he set in 1956 was unbroken. It still is. The movie White Men Can’t Jump didn’t apply to Kel.

As a boy at MAGS he hurdled through the top classes of 3A, 4Am spec 5A, 6Lang, 6A and still managed to do an incredible number of things (other than Athletics and Rugby) on the way including Tennis, Cricket, Swimming, and Drama. He was in the rifle Club and rose to the exalted rank of Lance Corporal in ‘A’ Company. And of course he was in the choir. Before I knew him I had heard him and Mike Blamires (a fellow prefect in 1956) and their two friends doing their close harmony routine at a couple of gigs.

When Bill Mitchell retired, Kel became Head of Languages from 1976 to 1978. Bill Lake reminisced about “Kel’s lifelong love of French, his knowledge of the culture and literature and his fluency and perfect accent. He was Senior Housemaster from 1973 to 1992. An astonishing record.He began his tenure in the new School House, built on the lower hockey field. Kel keep the buildings and grounds in good order but, more importantly, Houseboys were not only well groomed and well-mannered, they were also cheerful, open and friendly. Spike Milligan once said, “You can’t fool kids, they are the litmus paper of everything we do.” In the end, Kel didn’t fool kids. The ultimate House Boy accolade was heard of him: “Mr White’s a decent joker.”Kel left in 1994 to teach Latin and French at Auckland Grammar School from where he sort of retired in 2010.He had been in robust health all his life until an aggressive cancer took his life on 5 March 2013. His funeral, on 11 March 2013, was officiated by Mike Blamires. Kel’s children, Tanya and Stephen, spoke lovingly of him, his nephew, Brad Mihaljevich, spoke of Kel’s sage words of advice as he, Brad, was becoming a teacher, and of legendary times at Piha. Mike Blamires gave an account of Kel’s earlier life (and later gave profound and heartfelt words of committal).

Also speaking were Mike Macky, fellow prefect and athlete of 1956, and Lindsay Nash who along with Trevor Murfitt, completed the vocal quartet.

Alan Burton spoke of Kel as a Junior Housemaster and of our time together as young teachers and Mike Farrell from Auckland Grammar School who was, as a boy, taught by Kel and became his HOD at Auckland Grammar School.

Mount Albert Grammar School Foundation

The Mount Albert Grammar School Foundation intends to employ a full-time CEO to spearhead efforts to significantly increase the Foundation’s asset base so that the Foundation can provide greater support in its efforts to make MAGS the school of choice of New Zealanders. Several candidates have been interviewed for the position which will be school-based but answerable to the Foundation.Congratulations to Carl Perry, a former head prefect of the School, who received the Foundation’s scholarship to assist with his tertiary Teachers College costs in qualifying as a secondary school teacher. We expect to see him in a teacher role at MAGS after completing his studies.

Bequests

The Foundation acknowledges and appreciates the generous bequest of $20,000 recently received from the estate of Kimball Ryder. The Foundation regularly receives queries from Albertians wishing to leave a bequest for the school in their will. The suggested wording of such a bequest is:“I give the sum of $X to the Mount Albert Grammar School Foundation for the general purpose of the Foundation. I direct that a receipt from a trustee or officer of the Foundation shall be a sufficient discharge to my Trustees. “
