It takes a village to puton an event such asMoultrie’s Spring Flingwhich kicks off on Friday,April 19.

There are public andprivate sponsors to beorganized, there are atleast 50 volunteers to becoordinated, musical actsto be booked and logisticsfor setting up arts andcrafts displays.

It all somehow comestogether on that weekendto give up to 7,000 visitors afun and entertaining visitto the Colquitt CountyCourthouse Square.

The event began in the1980s as an effort to bringthe arts and local citizenstogether.

“It was basically an out-reach to bring the artsdowntown,” according toJane Simpson, arts pro-gramming director for theColquitt County ArtsCenter. Simpson handledthe visual arts portion ofthe Festival on the Squareweekend while ConnieFritz and Harvie Ann Coxorganized the performancearts.

Simpson was instru-mental in organizing thespring event that originallywas dubbed Festival on theSquare. Miller BrewingCompany was the primarysponsor for years beforeclosing its plant onHighway 319 south oftown.

Among the biggest

draws at Festival on theSquare during those dayswas a tavern set up byMiller which featuredblues and other bands.

There were arts andcrafts for children and theVolunteer Arts Alliancesponsored competitionwhich featured $5,000 inprizes given in differentarts categories. The hobbyartists lined three streetsaround the CourthouseSquare. City of Moultriecrews worked for weeksbringing electricity to thevenues.

The Festival on theSquare traditionallyopened with a picnic at theArts Center that was fol-lowed by a day of arts andcrafts and musical per-

formances. The event onthe Square closed eachyear with the MotherEaster Church Choirsinging on the main stage. That would be followed bya dance held in one of thelocal warehouses just offdowntown.

“It all made for a longweekend,” Simpson recalls.

The day came when theArts Center handed overthe reigns of the festival tothe City of Moultrie,,which now operates theSpring Fling with theMoultrie Main Streetagency which is directedby Amy Johnson.

“I think Amy’s done agreat job,” Simpson said.

brought it all together. Ourfirst year was a learningexperience,” Johnson said.

“We’re very fortunatethat our community part-ners have stood with us.”
