Accommodating a Growing PopulationTo To provide a reliable public transportation service to the

people of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, the city

is building the first fully-automatic metro rail system. The

AUD 8.3 billion Sydney Metro Northwest project includes

construction of twin 15-kilometer tunnels from Bella Vista to

Epping, Australia’s longest rail tunnels.

As part of a three-way joint venture, Mott MacDonald worked

to deliver the infrastructure design, and implement and

manage a BIM process on the project. The project operated

in 42 office locations, and was executed by a multidiscipline

team of approximately 500 employees in six countries.

Using ProjectWise, the team stayed organized and informed

about all project developments, also collaborating with

stakeholders.

Creating a Single Source of Truth with ProjectWise and AzureProjectWise provided a logical means of implementing and

enforcing the workflows and document coding required by

Mott MacDonald’s client. The project team also introduced

a hybrid environment to cater to increasing demand. This

environment allowed existing ProjectWise infrastructure in

Singapore to interact with ProjectWise infrastructure in the

Microsoft Azure cloud, which was located in Sydney.

Realizing Significant Savings from Cloud HostingBy moving to a cloud-based solution, Mott MacDonald

realized a capital cost saving of USD 25,000 and saved USD

120,000 per year in ongoing support. ProjectWise ensured

that the design progressed on schedule and work packages

were delivered on time, while implementing and enforcing the

BS1192 contractual requirements from the client. ProjectWise

helped the team establish and maintain quality management

systems and manage engineering assurance. The project

team also maintained compliance with the New South Wales

Authorized Engineering Organization. Moving forward, the

Sydney Metro Northwest project has set the benchmark for

ProjectWise implementation. The success of a ProjectWise

hybrid environment means that it is now the default solution

for all Mott MacDonald projects in the ANZ region.

ROI• By moving to a cloud-based

solution, Mott MacDonald realized a capital cost saving of USD 25,000.

• The team also saved USD 120,000 per year in ongoing support.
