    Throughout this guide, youll find tips that highlightspecial shortcuts and timely reminders to help youmake the most of your new phone and service. TheTable of Contents and Index will also help you quicklylocate specific information.

    Use and CareUse& Care

    Your mobile device is designed to resist damage fromexposure to certain rugged conditions. However, avoidprolonged or extreme exposure to those conditions. To

    help protect your mobile device, always make sure thebattery compartment and any connector covers areclosed and secure, and observe the followingprecautions:

    Dont expose your mobile device to water,extreme humidity, sweat, or other liquids. If itdoes get wet, dont try to accelerate dryingwith the use of an oven or dryer, as this maydamage the mobile device.

    1. Make sure your SIM card is in place.

    See Your SIM Card on page 2.

    2. Install the battery.

    3. Press and hold End/Power" for two seconds toturn the phone on.

    If your phone is activated, it will turn on, search forservice, and display the home screen.

    If your phone's SIM PIN is set, you may beprompted to enter your SIM PIN code when youturn on your phone. Press Menu/, enter thefour-digit SIM code, and touch OKto allow phonetransmissions as prompted. (See SIM CardSecurity on page 74 for more information.)

    display the keypad, and then enter a phonenumber.

    Your SIM Card

    Locating the SIM Card

    Your SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card is a smallcard inserted into the SIM card holder within yourphone below the battery.

    If no SIM card came with your phone, contact NextelCustomer Service at 1-800-639-6111.

    Most users will never need to remove or insert the SIMcard. However, if it becomes necessary, follow the

    instructions in Removing and Inserting the SIM Cardon page 3.

    Tip: If your phone screen is locked, drag the onscreenStretch to unlock button to the right to display the homescreen.

    Note: Your phones battery should have enough charge foryour phone to turn on and find a signal, set up yourvoicemail, and make a call. You should fully chargeyour battery as soon as possible. See Charging theBattery on page 7 for details.

    Removing and Inserting the SIM Card

    To remove your SIM card:

    1. With your phone powered off, slide the batterydoor latch on the side of the phone down. Whileholding the latch down, lift and remove the batterydoor.

    Important: The SIM card is designed for optimal Contactsstorage and feature use. For Nextel SIM cardcompatibility information, visitwww.nextel.com/sim.

    In some cases, Contacts and Groups may not be

    accessible if you move your SIM card to anotherphone. Contacts and Groups created with yourMOTOROLA i1 may not be readable by an olderiDEN SIM-based phone.

    Note: Your MOTOROLA i1 Contacts are managed and storedon your phone rather than on the SIM card. If you areusing a SIM card from a previous phone, you canimport your existing contacts from the SIM card to yourMOTOROLA i1 using the SIM Manager. Likewise, you

    can export your phones Contacts to your SIM card.See Import and Export Contacts on page 88 fordetails.

    Important: To avoid losing information stored in your SIMcard, do not remove it from your phone unlessabsolutely necessary.

    2. Open the memory card slot cover and slide in thememory card until it clicks into place.

    3. Close the memory card slot cover.

    Battery and Charger

    Nextel-approved and Motorola-approved batteries andaccessories can be found at Sprint Stores or throughMotorola. You may order online at www.nextel.com or bycalling 1-866-866-7509.

    Your phones Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) battery allows you torecharge it before it is fully drained.

    When the battery reaches 5% of its capacity, yourphone makes a sound and displays a message. Whenthere are approximately two minutes of talk time left, thephone sounds an audible alert and then turns off.

    WARNING: Use only Nextel-approved or Motorola-approvedbatteries and chargers with your phone. Thefailure to use a Nextel-approved or Motorola-approved battery and charger may increase the

    risk that your phone will overheat, catch fire, orexplode, resulting in serious bodily injury, death,or property damage.

    Important: For information on battery safety, see Battery Useand Safety on page 118.

    Installing the Battery

    1. With your phone powered off, slide the batterydoor latch on the side of the phone down. Whileholding the latch down, lift and remove the batterydoor.

    2. Insert the battery into the opening, making sure theconnectors align. Gently press down to secure thebattery.

    3. Replace the battery door, pressing down firmly onit to ensure it is secured properly.

    Note: Long backlight settings, searching for service, vibratemode, browser use, and other variables may reducethe batterys talk and standby times. See Battery Tipson page 24 for more details on extending battery life.

    Tip: Watch your phones battery level indicator and charge the

    battery before it runs out of power.

    Removing the Battery

    1. Make sure the power is off so that you dont loseany stored numbers or messages.

    2. Remove the battery cover and lift the battery toremove it.

    Charging the Battery

    Charge your battery as soon as possible so you canbegin using your phone.

    Always use a Nextel-approved or Motorola-approveddesktop charger, travel charger, or vehicle power

    adapter to charge your battery.

    Using the Phone Charger

    Plug the flat end of the charger into the phonesmicro USB connector and the other end into thewall socket connector. Plug the wall socketconnector to an electrical outlet.

    With the approved Li-Ion battery, you can recharge thebattery before it becomes completely run down.

    WARNING: Do not handle a damaged or leaking battery asyou can be burned.

    Turning Your Phone On

    Press and hold End/Power" for approximatelytwo seconds.

    As your phone connects to the network, you see aconnecting message. Your phone may require you toenter identifying information to use it or to accessspecific features.

    Turning Your Phone Off

    Press and hold End/Power" to open the Power Keymenu, where you can turn off the phone (Power off), orturnAirplane mode or Silent mode on or off.

    Sleep and Wake Up

    To conserve your battery, preventaccidental touches, or when youwant to wipe smudges off yourtouchscreen, put the touchscreen to

    sleep by pressing Screen Lock#

    ontop of the phone. To wake up thetouchscreen, press Screen Lock# again and thendrag to the right to unlock the screen.

    Activating Your Phone

    If you purchased your phone at a Nextel Store, it isprobably activated and ready to use.

    If your phone is not activated, please call NextelCustomer Service at 1-800-639-6111 from any otherphone.

    When you power up your phone the first time, itperforms a series of security checks. For example, it

    verifies the phone is Nextel-approved and the correctSIM card is installed. If you dont pass the securitychecks, your phone displays messages and screen

    The first time you turn on your phone, a setup wizardappears and helps you get started.

    1. (Optional) If you want to change the primarylanguage used by your phone, touch Changelanguage and then touch a language.

    2. Touch Start on the bottom right side of the screen.

    3. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the

    wizard. To skip any steps or to proceed aftercompleting a step, touch Next.

    Set up your Wi-Fi connection.

    Sign in to your existing Google Gmail account.

    If you dont have a Google account, you cancreate one using the wizard.

    Set up additional email accounts, such as POP3,IMAP, or Microsoft Exchange.

    Import contacts from your SIM card.

    Select your keyboard type.

    4. Touch Done to exit the setup wizard.

    Tip: Remember to write down your user name and password,and keep them in a safe place.

    Tip: To type information in any of the setup steps, touch the

    text field to display the keyboard. To switch from portrait(vertical) to landscape (widescreen), turn the phonecounter-clockwise.

    Setting Up Voicemail

    All unanswered calls to your phone are automaticallytransferred to your voicemail, even if your phone is inuse or turned off. Therefore, it is recommended that youset up your voicemail and personal greeting as soonas your phone is activated.

    1. Using your MOTOROLA i1, call your wireless phonenumber.

    2. Follow the system prompts to:

    Create your passcode.

    Record your name announcement.

    Record your greeting.

    Account Passwords

    With Nextel service, you enjoy unlimited access to yourpersonal account information and voicemail account.To ensure that no one else has access to yourinformation, you need to create passwords to protectyour privacy.

    Account Username and Password

    If you are the account owner, you will create an accountusername and password when you sign on towww.nextel.com. (Click Need to register for access? to getstarted.) If you are not the account owner (if someoneelse receives the bill for your service), you can get a

    sub-account password at www.nextel.com.

    Voicemail Password

    You will create your voicemail password (or passcode)when you set up your voicemail. See Setting UpVoicemail on page 10 for more information on yourvoicemail password.

    Note: Voicemail Passcode: It is strongly recommended thatyou create a passcode when setting up your voicemailto protect against unauthorized access. Without apasscode, anyone who has access to your phone isable to access your voicemail messages.

    The home screen gives you all your latest informationin one place. Its what you see when you turn on thephone or press HomeX. Heres the basic setup:

    The home screen extends beyond what you see on theinitial screen to give you more room for addingshortcuts, widgets, and more. Flick the home screenleft and right to see more panels or to add widgets orshortcuts.

    Widgets

    Shortcuts

    To add shortcuts to the home screen, touch(theApplications tab), and then touch and hold theshortcut you want. When the display switches tothe home screen, drag the short cut to an empty

    space. You can also press Menu/>Add >Shortcuts.

    Apps (Applications)

    Your phone comes with some apps (applications)already installed, and you can download and installmore. To open an app, touch its icon.

    Applications Tab

    All the apps on your phone,including the apps that came withyour phone and any youdownload and install, are listed inalphabetical order in yourApplications menu.

    Touch (theApplications tab) at the bottom ofthe home screen to open the app menu.

    Running Multiple Apps

    Your phone can run multiple apps simultaneously, sothere is no need to close one app before opening

    another one.

    To open a new app while another is already running,press HomeX to display the home screen. Touch

    and touch the app you want to open. To switchfrom one running app to another, press and holdHomeX to display a list of currently running apps,and then touch the one you want. The list displays upto six running apps.

    Search

    You can launch a Google search directly from thehome screen.

    1. Press Menu/> Search or flick the home screento the left to display the search widget.

    2. Touch the text field to display the keyboard, and

    enter your search term.

    Swype Text Entry

    Swype lets you enter a word with one continuousmotion. To enter a word, just drag your finger over theletters.

    Swype Typing Tips

    To enter apostrophes in common words (like Ill),drag through the n as though it was an apostrophe.

    To enter several symbols, touch SYM.

    To correct a word, double-tap it. Swype shows a

    small menu of other word options. Swype might alsoshow a menu if it cant guess your word.

    If Swype doesnt know a word, you can still touch theletter keys to enter it. Swype remembers, so next timeyou can just drag over the letters.

    Text Entry Settings

    When you use the touchscreen keyboard, your phonesuggests words from your dictionary and chosenlanguage.

    To conserve battery life between charges: Reduce recording or watching videos, listening to

    music, or taking pictures.

    Disable or remove widgets that stream information toyour home screen, such as news or weather. (SeeHome Screen on page 14.)

    in Cool Down mode, only emergency calls can bemade.

    Using a Remote Direct Connect Button

    If you are using a headset or other optional accessorywith a remote Direct Connect button, you can use theremote Direct Connect button for phone calls, DirectConnect calls, and Group Connect calls.

    For phone calls, use the remote Direct Connect buttonto answer calls, switch between calls, and end calls.Hold the remote Direct Connect button for less thantwo seconds to answer calls and switch between calls.Hold the remote Direct Connect button for more thantwo seconds to end calls.

    For Direct Connect calls and Group Connect calls, usethe remote Direct Connect button as you would the

    Direct Connect button on your phone.

    Digital Wireless Phone Calls offer clear calls and otherservices, such as missed call notification, Three-WayCalling, and speakerphone.

    Placing a traditional wireless phone call from yourMOTOROLA i1 is as easy as making a call from anylandline phone.

    1. Touch Dialer, enter a number, and thenpressTalk`.

    Missed Phone Calls

    Missed phone calls are forwarded to voicemail. Whenyou do not answer an incoming call, you will see aMissed Call notification.

    To display a Missed Call entry from the notification bar:

    Drag the notification bar down and touch themissed call notification.

    To display a Missed Call entry from the home screen:

    1. PressTalk` or touch Dialer > Call Log.

    2. Touch an entry.

    Emergency Calls

    Your phone supports emergency calling. Emergencyphone calls can be made even when your SIM card isblocked or not in your phone.

    Touch Dialer, enter911 and press

    Talk` to be connected to an emergencyresponse center. If you are on an active call, youmust end it before calling 911. If your phone islocked, touch the Emergency call button at thebottom of the screen.

    When you make an emergency call, your phones GPSEnabled feature can help emergency servicepersonnel find you, if you are in a location where your

    phone's GPS antenna has established a clear view ofthe open sky and your local emergency responsecenter has the equipment to process locationinformation. See GPS and AGPS on page 129.Because of the limitations of this feature, alwaysprovide your best knowledge of your location to theemergency response center when you make anemergency call.

    In Call Options

    Press Menu/ during a call todisplay a list of available in-callfeatures. To select an option,touch it. The following optionsmay be available:

    Swap call to switch between toactive calls.

    Merge call to initiate a three-way call.

    Add call to place a second call.

    End call to end the call.

    Hold to place a call on hold.

    Mute to mute your phones microphone. Touch Muteagain to unmute your phones microphone.

    Speaker to route the phones audio through thespeaker or the earpiece.

    Important: Always report your location to the 911 operatorwhen placing an emergency call. Somedesignated emergency call takers, known asPublic Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) may notbe equipped to receive GPS location informationfrom your phone.

    If you have not registered on the network,emergency calls cannot be placed while yourSIM card is in your phone.

    If you are bringing your phone number to Nextelfrom your previous carrier, you may receive atemporary telephone number while your Nextelphone is being programmed with yourpermanent phone number. If you make a call to911 and the call fails, the 911 emergency

    response center will not be able to call you backon your Nextel phone if in the meantime, yourNextel phone has been programmed with yourpermanent telephone number. If the call isdisconnected before location and details havebeen provided, call 911 again and advise that youwere disconnected. Tip: You can also press Speaker) to turn the speaker on

    and off.

    Finding a Number

    Phone Numbers With Pauses

    You can dial or save phone numbers with pauses foruse with automated systems, such as voicemail,conference call, or credit card billing numbers.

    There are two types of pauses available on your phone

    Wait sends the next set of numbers when prompted.

    Pause automatically sends the next set of numbersafter three seconds.

    Making Direct Connect Calls

    1. Touch Dialer and enter a Direct Connectnumber. See Dialing Direct Connect Numbers onpage 33.

    2. Press and hold the DirectConnect (DC) button on the leftside of your phone. Begintalking after your phone emitsa chirping sound.

    3. Release the DC button to listen.

    A Direct Connect call ends automatically after there isno activity on the call for several seconds.

    Every Direct Connect number has three parts:

    An area ID.

    A network ID.

    A member ID.

    An asterisk separates each part (for example:999*999*9999). When you enter a number containingall three parts, you must separate them with asterisks.

    If you are contacting someone sharing your networkand area IDs, you only need to enter the member ID(the last part of the number).

    1. Touch Dialer and enter a member ID.

    Making Direct Connect Calls From Contacts or

    the Call Log

    If you have numbers stored in Contacts (page 82) orthe Call log (page 78), you can use these numbers tomake calls.

    1. Touch Contacts, or touch Dialer >Call log.

    2. Touch an entry and then press and hold the DCbutton to call the entrys Direct Connect number.

    When you receive a Direct Connect call, your phoneemits a tone or vibrates. You then hear the voice ofyour caller.

    A Direct Connect call ends automatically after there isno activity on the call for several seconds.

    Direct Connect Timeout

    You can extend the automatic timeout of a Direct

    Connect call by about 30 seconds using the ResumeDCsetting. Touch > Settings>Call settings>

    Direct Connect settings>Resume DC.Tip: You can make Direct Connect calls while viewing entry

    details on either list. Display the entry details or My Infofrom another phone (in the Call log) and press and holdthe DC button.

    Creating Groups in Contacts

    1. Touch Contacts>Menu/>New group.

    2. Touch the icon to the left of the entry names toselect the group members.

    3. Touch Save(Selected) to store the Group inContacts.

    4. Scroll to the bottom of the entry and touch Done.

    Adding Group Members

    To add member to a Group stored in Contacts:

    exchange pictures, My Info, contact information, andGroups with other phones that have this capability.

    Nextel Direct Send cannot be used during Talkgroupcalls. Pictures cannot be sent in Group Connect calls.

    Sending a Picture

    Sending a Picture During a Call

    You can send a picture at any time during a DirectConnect call, whether you made or received the call.(Additional charges may apply.)

    You cannot talk or listen on a Direct Connect call whilea picture is being transmitted. Other activities, such assearching for a picture, do not prevent you from talkingor listening.

    4. When prompted, press the DC button to resumethe Direct Connect call.

    Starting a Call by Sending a Picture

    You can start a call by choosing a stored picture fromthe Media Gallery.

    To do this, you must have the recipients Direct Connectnumber and IP address stored in your Contacts.

    To start a call by sending a picture:

    1. Touch > Media Gallery> All Pictures.

    2. Touch and hold a photo, then touch Share.

    3. Touch DC, and touch DC contacts or DC call log.These names have Direct Connect numbers andIP addresses stored.

    4. Select a name and press the DC button to sendthe picture.

    5. When prompted, press the DC button to resume

    the Direct Connect call.

    Receiving a Picture

    When someone sends you a picture using NextelDirect Send, your phone emits a tone or vibrates and amessage appears on the display asking you to acceptthe picture.

    Pictures you receive are saved to your phones memoryand are accessible through the Media Gallery.

    Note: The first time you send a stored picture after turning thephone on, the message Picture fees may applyappears and you are prompted to respond. Touch OK

    Sending My Info and Contact Information

    When you send My Info or contact information usingNextel Direct Send, the information you send appearson the display of the receiving phone. After the call, the

    information appears on that phones Call log list.

    You can control what portion of the information in MyInfo is sent, and whether it is sent automatically in everyDirect Connect call or only when you choose to send it

    The information your phone sends always includes MyName and Direct Connect.

    It may include Line 1, Line 2, Direct Connect, and GroupID depending on the options provided by your serviceprovider and how you set your sending options.

    The default setting is Line 1 only.

    To change which fields are sent:

    1. Touch > Settings >Call settings >Direct Connect settings > Sharing contact info >

    Select info to share.

    Note: The first time you accept a stored picture after turningthe phone on, the message Picture fees may applyappears and you are prompted to respond. Touch OKto accept the picture. Touch Cancel to cancel.

    Tip: To stop the transmission before it is finished, touchCancel.

    Note: When you send your contact information, certaininformation, such as street addresses or custom entries,chat addresses, organizations, and notes cannot beincluded.

    Note: The My Info feature gets its information from yourphones contact entry. To add more information to MyInfo, edit your phones contact entry, and then select theadditional fields in the Select info to share screen.

    Contacts entries that contain only addresses cannot besent. When Contacts entries are received, they do notinclude ringtones or pictures.

    To send contact information during a call:

    1. While in a Direct Connect call, press Menu/>Share contact.

    2. Select a contact to send

    3. When prompted, press the DC button to send theinformation.

    Note: When you receive your phone, it is set to send yourinformation automatically.

    A Talkgroup is a predetermined group of DirectConnect users, created by an account administrator.Talkgroups can contain up to 100 members.

    Difference Between Group Connect andTalkgroup Calls

    In a Group Connect call, you or another callerdetermines who can participate in the call. By contrast,participation in a Talkgroup is determined by anadministrator. Here are the ways Group Connect andTalkgroup calls differ.

    Joining a TalkgroupTo participate in a Talkgroup, the account administratormust first add you to the membership and then youmust join the Talkgroup.

    1. Touch Contacts and touch a Talkgroup toopen it.

    2. Touch Join.

    You can now receive communications from othermembers of this Talkgroup.

    You will hear all active Talkgroup conversations on yourphone. To silence them, touch > Settings>Call settings>Direct Connect settings>Silence

    Sending Call Alerts

    1. Touch Dialer, enter a Direct Connectnumber and press Menu/>Send Alert.

    Responding to a Call Alert

    Touch > Messaging.To open a message:

    Creating and Sending Messages

    Each message you create may contain the followingfields:

    To the phone numbers or email addresses of oneor more recipients.

    Message the body of the message. This mayinclude text, pictures, ringtones, or voice records.

    Attach one or more attachments. These may bepictures, ringtones, or audio files, including voicerecords that you create while creating the message.To add an attachment, press Menu/>Attach.

    To send a message, you must address it to at least onerecipient. All other message fields are optional and youcan fill them in any order.

    Entering Text

    In message fields that require you to enter text, touchthe message field to display the keyboard. If thekeyboard is already displayed, begin typing whenever

    the field is highlighted.Message Size

    You can create and send messages of up to 100 KB,including attachments, for MMS.

    Creating a Message

    1. Touch > Messaging > New message.2. Address the message:

    TouchTo. Enter the phone number, contact nameor email address from the keyboard. Use acomma to separate multiple phone numbers oremail addresses. Once you begin typing, yourphone will show a list of contacts that are possible

    matches for the letters you have typed.

    3. Enter or edit the body of the message:

    Touch the message fieldand then enter text usingthe keyboard.

    4. To send the message without additional options,touch Send.

    Replying to a Message

    You can reply to a message while you are viewing it.

    More Ways to Begin a Message

    In addition to beginning a message from Messaging,you can begin a message from Contacts, the Call loglist, the home screen, or the Media Gallery.

    To begin a message from Contacts:

    1. From the Contacts list, touch an entry.

    To begin a message from the Media Gallery:

    1. From the Media Gallery, touch and hold a picture orvideo.

    3. Create and send the message. The selected file isautomatically included as an attachment.

    Drafts

    Messages you are creating are automatically saved asdrafts when you exit the message screen. The

    message must be addressed to someone in order for itto be saved as a draft.

    1. Touch > Messaging.2. Draft messages have Draft in red letters next to

    them on the right.

    3. Touch the message to open it and finish

    composing your message.

    Forwarding Messages

    1. Touch > Messaging.2. Touch a message thread to open it.

    3. Touch and hold a message and then touchForward.

    4. Address, edit, and send your message.

    Receiving a Message

    When you receive an MMS message, a messagenotification appears on the notification bar.

    To view the message:

    Drag the notification bar down from the top of thescreen and touch the message notification.

    This icon appears on the display, reminding youthat you have a new message.

    Navigating a Message

    As you scroll through a message, numbers, emailaddresses, and Web addresses are highlighted.

    Pictures and audio recordings are also highlighted.

    Attachments

    Messages may contain pictures or audio files asattachments.

    If a message contains a picture or audio file as anattachment, touch the attachment to view the picture orplay the audio file.

    Actions for Received Messages

    Deleting

    To delete messages:

    1. Touch a message thread to open it.

    2. Touch and hold a message and then touch Deletemessage.

    2. Touch OKto confirm.

    Forwarding

    1. Touch a message thread to open it.

    2. Touch and hold a message and then touchForward.

    3. Address, edit, and send your message.

    If any field in a message contains a phone number,Direct Connect number, or Talkgroup ID, you can callor send a Call Alert to that number.

    To make a call to a number in a message:

    2. Touch a number and pressTalk` to make aphone call or press the DC button to make a DirectConnect call

    To send a Call Alert to a Direct Connect number in a

    message:

    1. View the message.

    2. Touch the Direct Connect number and then pressMenu/>SendAlert.

    3. Press the DC button.

    To make a Talkgroup call to a Talkgroup ID in a message:

    1. View the message.

    2. Touch the Talkgroup ID and then press Menu/>

    JoinTalkgroup.3. Press the DC button.

    Storing Message Information to Contacts

    If a message you receive contains a phone number,Direct Connect number, Talkgroup ID, or an emailaddress in any of the fields, you can store thisinformation to Contacts.

    1. View the message.
