Collaboration offers huge potential for synergies

Dear readers,

This issue of MOTOREX magazine contains anarticle on our collaboration with YAMAHA in top-level motor racing.

We aim to use our position in the premium off-road market to establish ourselves in the topsegment of the on-road market. Our collabora-tion with KTM in the 125 and 250 cc classes of the MotoGP and with YAMAHA in theSupersport World Championship are an excel-lent springboard for doing so. This is a forward-looking commitment, since it already goesmuch further than simple sponsorship of motorracing. We are therefore also working closelywith the manufacturers’ dealer organizations onthe marketing side. Thus MOTOREX products– which are only available from specialist out-lets – will bring in extra customers for dealers.

These collaborations create synergies that benefit the development of new products andfurther development of existing products. Ourrelationship with YAMAHA gives us access tothe most modern engine test beds in Europe, where we can see how development productsmatch up to real-life conditions and wherefurther optimization is needed.

We will leverage the image associations withroad racing in the long term to create a market-ing platform for existing and forthcoming prod-ucts, thereby giving you a chance to achievesustainable success.

I hope you will enjoy this latest issue and wisheveryone a successful new season!

Yours sincerely,

“MOTOREX on the way to the top of the oils & lubes market”Editorial articles in trade journals give fac-tual accounts of the latest news in a partic-ular sector. One such periodical is theUS monthly “Motorcycle Industry”magazine, which has a large read-ership throughout the UnitedStates. In a recent edition witha special feature on “Oils &Lubes”, the magazine displayed great interest inlubricants “made byMOTOREX in Switzer-land”. It seems thatMOTOREX’s drum-shaped elevator capturedthe journalists’ imaginations, since a photo of it was evenpublished by the magazine’s table

of contents as an example of original cor-porate communications!

KTM RACING 4T endorsementThe magazine was also extremely interest-ed in MOTOREX’s collaboration withKTM. KTM’s series-production bikes arefactory filled with MOTOREX’s CROSSPOWER 4T SAE 10W/50 high-perform-ance motor oil, the basis on which the uncompromising KTM RACING 4T SAE 20W/60 race oil was developed. KTM RACING 4T is used by all KTMfactory teams in such prestigious events asthe Dakar Rally, and the endorsement isearning MOTOREX considerable atten-tion in the specialist media.

As one of our importers and distribu-tors, help MOTOREX and its

products to achieve their richly deserved place at the “top of

the oils & lubes market” – to use the magazine’s words

– by forging andmaintaininggood relationswith trademedia. You canobtain graphicsand product de-scriptions fromyour contact atMOTOREX inSwitzerland.

New look for the PADDOCK REPORTThe PADDOCK REPORT published as a supplement to MOTOREX magazinehas a new look: it will no longer appear as a booklet, but as a poster (to be found inthe middle of this issue). What’s more, the“sports section” of MOTOREX’s websiteis being comprehensively upgraded.

MOTOREX e-cards and factsFans can also bring top imagesfrom the world’s circuits right into their homes or workshopsthanks to our other posters fromthe current race season. Theposters can be ordered from ourwebsite or obtained from yourMOTOREX partner.

As an added bonus, the backs ofthe posters give lots of valuableextra information such as tablesof race dates – the MOTOREX Race Calendar 2006 – plus lists of teams, ridersand, at the end of the season, those all-important final results. What more couldfans of MOTOREX’s sporting activitieswish for?

We hope everyone has another exciting season and wish the very best of luck to allthe teams and riders who will be competingfor MOTOREX this year. We’ll be keepingour fingers crossed for you all!

Gasoline direct injec-tion (GDI) produces a measurable reductionin fuel consumption

by enabling engines to run on a very lean fuel/air mixture in the part load range.

However, the official service specificationsissued by manufacturers such as Mitsubishispecify a motor oil developed specially for GDI engines.

With its new PROFILE G-DI SAE 10W/30,MOTOREX now offers a motor oil developedspecifically for sophisticated GDI technologyand to prevent undesirable deposits on the inlet valves.

This synthetic performance lubricant alsohelps to ensure that GDI technology is used to maximum benefit and its outstanding prop-erties make it a sure-fire winner. Ask yourMOTOREX partner now about the further advantages of PROFILE G-DI!

Successful lead-in to the Geneva Motor Show

And there’s sure to be a surprise or two instore for you this year as well. See you at the MOTOREX stand!

The traditional lead-in to the new auto-motive year, the 76th international GenevaMotor Show, was keenly awaited by ex-hibitors and, in particular, car manufactur-ers. After last year’s declining sales figures in Switzerland (-3%) and around the world, the many innovations on display raised spirits in Geneva. What’s more total admis-sions were 674’000 – not a visitor record but a large number of intersted people!

One of the highlights was Automobil Revuemagazine’s centenary celebrations, which included a selection of automotive goodiesfrom the past 100 years. BUCHERMOTOREX and MOTOREX-TOPTECHimpressed visitors too with their many highlights from the worlds of lubrication engineering and garage installations.

Consumer quality awareness is very high in the superstate of Singapore – Italianmotorcycles such as Ducati are imports ofpreference, for example, and races are runwith purebred motocross bikes such asKTM and Husquarna. Of course there isalso a lot of Asian bikes.

Sporting Motors has been working withMOTOREX for many years and success-fully markets the entire MOTO LINErange throughout the republic, which is

Singapore: “Swiss-made” MOTO LINE sells welljust 626 km2 in size and consists of onemain island and 58 smaller islands. Thehigh-quality motor oils are especiallypopular with Joseph Lee’s (pictured) cus-tomers in the world-famous city-state.

True connoisseurs in Singapore prizeMOTOREX products for their “made inSwitzerland” label and racing successes.“Sell the best and your customers will behappy too”, is how Jo Lee of SportingMotors sums it all up.

D E G R ADAB L ESPRAYS: not just a ‘canned’ solutionJOKER 440 SYNTHETIC, ANTI-RUST, GREASE SPRAY, SILICONE,TEFLON® and all the other sprays from the MOTOREX HI-TECH rangeare known throughout the world as high-quality products. Although developed fordaily professional use in workshops, theseversatile tools are proving immensely popular and valuable in household, gardenand hobby applications.

Modern sprays as problem solversMOTOREX has more than 30 years’ ex-perience of manufacturing aerosols andpump-action sprays. Sprays are an essentialpart of today’s toolkit in many sectors.

MOTOREX was an early pioneer ofFCHC-free propellants, and its brilliantball valve keeps the spray working evenwhen inverted. This makes it easy to get to places that were once hard to reach.Where appropriate, products are equippedwith an extended nozzle. This is particu-larly useful for precision re-lubing of ex-posed lubrication points. The integratedball valve also means the spray cans can be emptied completely. This is not only an important point in favor of econo-my but also in favor of environmental protection.

New products, new designTechnological innovation necessitates advances in sprays as well. MOTOREX is therefore launching five new sprays:INTACT MX 50, GREASE SPRAY, TEFLON®, PROTEX and TOOL-GUARD.

At the same time all our sprays have beenredesigned and the descriptive pictogramsmake it easy to match up the sprays totheir applications. Texts in several lan-guages provide clear instructions, ensuringsuccessful use every time. The spray tops are made of recycled PE granulate, and the empty cans can be recycled asscrap metal.

The Euro 4 and 5 exhaust emissions stan-dards place increased demands on motoroils. Diesel engines that meet these stan-dards need LowSAPS – low sulfate ash, phosphorus and sulfur – lubricants thatprotect engines against deposits and en-sure that exhaust aftertreatment systemsretain a high level of long-term efficiency. This means that the motor oil developersat MOTOREX have had to drastically reduce SAPS additives content. Unfortu-nately, though, these are precisely the in-gredients that gave oils their lubricating,anti-wear properties and kept enginesclean. Just mixing less of these valuable additives into the oil was therefore not theanswer, because they also play a role in extending oil change intervals and thus inimproving economy.

These new requirements prompted the development of a completely new additivestechnology which ensures a reduction inSAPS components at no detriment to oilchange intervals or the efficiency of lubri-cation. MOTOREX’s innovative Low-

Racing the ideal test bedNowhere are materials subjected to moreextreme conditions than in racing. This iswhy the official YAMAHA factory team hasopted for MOTOREX in the SupersportWorld Championship. In the 2006 seasonthe Australian riders Kevin Curtain andBroc Parkes will be competing for theWorld Championship title in YAMAHAred and white on the company’s new YZF-R6. And MOTOREX has developed spe-cial lubricants that further enhance the sta-bility and performance of the YZF-R6’sengine to help them in their bids. The testbed trials yielded highly satisfactory resultswhich were subsequently corroborated inreal-life testing on Phillip Island, Australia.

In addition to its strong off-road presence,MOTOREX will now also be highly visible on the racing circuits of the world. The brand is already well known in theMotoGP and the American AMA Super-bike, and the new collaboration well estab-lish it in the international German cham-pionship and Superbike Supersport WorldChampionship.

YAMAHA will naturally be equipping all the workshops at its German headquar-ters in Neuss with MOTOREX productsso that dealers are made aware of the col-laboration.

And they’re off!

The Japanese motorcycle manufacturerfirst became aware of the strengths and potential of MOTOREX through the Swiss lubrication company’s success-ful collaboration with KTM.

YAMAHA has been extremely success-ful in racing for many years, and itsprowess in road racing makes it the idealpartner for experience sharing in this discipline and the perfect complement to KTM’s off-road expertise. Thus, as of the beginning of this year, MOTOREX has been the official lubri-cant partner for the motorsports arm ofYAMAHA Germany.

Lining up together for the YAMAHA R6 Cup 2006The YAMAHA R6 Cup has been takingplace for 28 years as reliably as aYAMAHA itself. This year again, up to 50 young riders will be putting their skillsand abilities to the test, each hoping to be talent-spotted by an international rac-ing team. Eight qualifying rounds takeplace as part of the International GermanChampionship (IDM) and the EnduranceWorld Championship in Oschersleben,Germany. To ensure a level playing field, the riders compete on identical machines: a 2006 YAMAHA YZF-R6, Dunlop tires, and MOTOREX POWER SYNT SAE 10W/60 motor oil in the engine.

Engineer Dieter Schuller founded Linz-based SCHUMOTO GesmbH in 1978,not long before the big motorcycle boomhit. His decision was prompted by the fact that motorcycle spare parts for retail salewere available exclusively from motorcycle manufacturers. Dieter Schuller became anindependent wholesaler – and so a businessidea was born! With the experience ofworking in his parents’ bicycle and motor-cycle business for 9 years under his belt, he knew exactly what was needed.

Motorcycle connoisseurs and specialistsBy building up close links with specialistOEM spare parts manufacturers, DieterSchuller was able to start importing for hisown account. With attractive conditions, top quality and high availability, his activi-ties soon met with great interest, especiallyfrom retailers and repair shops not tied toa specific brand. The entrepreneur’s origi-nal intention was to do good business withlittle effort. The business got off to a goodstart on the back of reasonable purchaseprices with sufficient scope for attractivemargins. Today, SCHUMOTO suppliessome 700 specialist motorcycle and moped dealers and repair shops through-out Austria. “The only thing I underesti-mated was the effort required”, confessesDieter Schuller, raising his eyebrows in aknowing smile.

High availability and streamlined administration11,000 items for all popular Japanese andmany Italian motorcycles, scooters andmopeds are now in stock in a 1,900 m2

warehouse with 542 palette spaces. Theworkforce grew continuously, 26 peoplenow work for the largest independentmotorcycle parts supplier in Austria. During the high season, roughly 600 deliveries a day leave the modern ware-house. Availability is an enormous 98%!

The Austrian market could hardly be better served. Three sales agents pay regu-lar visits to SCHUMOTO customers, who can make their selections from abroad range of well-known OEM prod-ucts. SCHUMOTO has always attachedgreat importance to quality, so sales ofMOTOREX lubrication and care productshave made a key contribution to theSCHUMOTO success story since 1994.

Strong market position and expertiseIn export markets, even a well-knownbrand offering high-quality products canonly build on its success if it works with an active importer with the right saleschannels. In SCHUMOTO, MOTOREXhas a highly professional partner whosereputation extends far beyond the Austrianborder. www.schumoto.at

High process reliability at decreasing

cost? A case for thread whirling

rather than milling. We provide the

recipe for success.

RNO

Thread whirling starts. The thread is ma-

chined by the rotating motion of the C axis

and the longitudinal motion of the Z axis,

where only one cutting edge of the whirling

spindle is in use at any time.

The Schwanog whirling tool is set up in front

of the workpiece and turns at high speed.

The spindle and workpiece turn at a lower

speed in the same direction.

That being said, thread whirling stainlesssteel or titanium components placestough demands on the whirling tool andthe cutting oil. Today around 90% of allthreads in the prestigious dental and medical technology industry are pro-duced by whirling, and this modernthread-cutting technology has also estab-lished itself in other industrial sectorssuch as precision turning and watch-mak-ing. But let’s stay with the machining ofmaterials that are difficult to work, suchas the INOX 1.4441 implant shown. Inconjunction with the part manufacturerStuckenbrock Medizintechnik GmbH ofTuttlingen, Germany, MOTOREX tested the use of its high-performanceORTHO NF-X cutting oil.

Schwanog® special carbide toolsModern whirling tools incorporate awealth of expertise accumulated over theyears. The application technology, com-plex alloys and hardening processes applied to the tool cutting edges all playtheir part in whirling’s success.

The sophisticated WEP profile cutterchanging system marketed by Schwanog®,Siegfried Güntert GmbH of Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany provides suchadvantages as:

1. High cost-efficiency thanks to rapid insert changing

2. Significant increase in tool life3. Reduced costs from not having

to rework

The Schwanog® WEP system offers thegreat advantage of working with ex-changeable inserts. This not only providesthe maximum precision required, but alsosignificantly reduces tool changing costsat that same time.

The external thread of the part shown canbe whirled to its final dimensions in a single pass without the need for rework-ing. The entire thread depth is producedin just one work step! The demand forhigh-quality surgical implants continuesto rise rapidly, yet prices are only movingslightly sideways. This means that pro-duction has to become even more preciseand cost-effective. This can only beachieved through the use of more precisetechnologies and by reducing unit pro-duction times. You will find further inter-

The defined thread length has almost been

esting information on the tools used atwww.schwanog.com.

Away with swarf and down with unit production timesWith today’s manufacturing technology, efficient metalworking is only possiblewith fluids that are perfectly matched tothe machining process.

Hence machine operators prefer to workat a speed where they can be certain thatno problems will arise in series produc-tion. Process reliability is undoubtedly essential, but with today’s technology, unutilized reductions in unit productiontimes have a huge impact. The Stucken-brock company therefore machined the implant shown using MOTOREXORTHO NF-X, and all attention was focused on the whirling stage.

With its superior high-pressure propertiescoupled with its flushing and cooling per-formance, this cutting oil was impressiveright from the start. Its high-tolerancelubricating film and total stability over anextremely wide temperature range alsomake it ideal for high cutting rates. Themeasurable reduction in unit productiontimes in the test series runs was achievedwith no loss of dimensional stability orsurface quality.

Greater precision and reliability with MOTOREX vmax technologyTo make it to the top of the cost-efficien-cy league, companies need to utilize thefull potential of their machining centers,

tools, materials and machining fluid. It is a well-known fact that higher manufac-turing speeds result in higher tempera-tures, and this is something thatMOTOREX’s vmax technology specifi-cally exploits. A clearly defined high tem-perature when the machining process isrunning at maximum speed is capable of triggering desirable chemical synergyeffects and thus of facilitating an expo-nential increase in performance at thecrucial moment.

Greater process reliability, lower production timesHowever, the benefits extend far beyondreduced unit production times. The effec-tive cooling and lubrication also increasedprocess reliability, resulting in an signifi-cant associated decrease in the number of machine downtimes. This is a convinc-ing argument, especially for night and unmanned shifts.

No matter whether whirling is already being used or due to be introduced, thetools used and the cutting oil in particularhave a decisive impact on the desired outcome.
