INTRODUCTIONThe Basic Motor Skills Test consists of two parts:the Strength and Endurance Test and the JobTask Course. Part One includes four activities andPart Two includes 15 activities. Each applicantmust successfully complete the first activity in PartOne (Trigger Pull) to be permitted to continue withthe test. In order to pass the test, the applicantmust complete 17 of the remaining 18 activitiessuccessfully.

NOTICEEvery person who uses the facilities of theInstitute of Public Safety does so at his orher own risk. Broward College assumes noresponsibility for any injury or loss of anykind whatsoever sustained by any personwhile participating in Basic Motor Skills test-ing or any related activity.

No person may enter the test course or fieldunless under the immediate supervision ofan Institute of Public Safety staff member.

Testing will not be conducted during in-clement weather, or at any time at which theTesting Center staff determines that condi-tions or circumstances would make testingunsafe.

Description and PurposeThis station consists of an elongated loop in therunning surface with a narrow turf infield. At theends of the infield are two vertical cones approxi-mately 36 feet apart. The station serves as a testof speed, agility, and balance.

ExecutionEnter from Station 14, passing to the right of conenumber one. Proceed around loop two completelaps, making four complete 180-degree turns.Time measurement stops when runner hascompleted second full turn around cone numberone. Exit by carefully stepping off course aftercompleting second full turn around cone numberone.

PART ONE

Strength andEnduranceThe Strength and Endurance test consists offour activities. In order to complete an activ-ity, the applicant must meet all requirementslisted for time, distance, and number of rep-etitions. The applicant must successfullycomplete the first activity (Trigger Pull) in or-der to be permitted to continue. The PartOne activities are listed below:

1. Trigger Pull – 18 times with strong hand,12 times with weak hand.

2. Standing Long Jump – distance equal toapplicant’s height.

3. Vehicle Push – 20 feet on level, paved sur-face.

4. Half-Mile Run – in five minutes or less.

Description and PurposeThis station consists of a vertical masonry wallrising to a height of approximately four feet abovethe running service. It simulates walls of similarheight and construction frequently encountered inbusiness and residential areas.ExecutionApproach on running surface, as previously indi-cated, place both hands on the wall, force bodyweight upward and drop to opposite side, landingon both feet with knees flexed sufficiently to avoidinjury. Bear to right and continue on course.

Description and PurposeThis station consists of two parallel steel barsseven feet long and two feet apart, mountedapproximately 4 - feet above the running surface.It serves as a test of hand, arm, and upper bodystrength.ExecutionEnter from the direction of Station 12, with bothhands, grasp the bars at the center of the grayportion and thrust body upward. Extend both arms,locking the elbows, and proceed forward withouttouching the running surface by advancing eachhand alternately at least three times. Drop to theground carefully, landing on both feet, with kneesflexed sufficiently to avoid injury. Turn left, moveforward to next turn, turn left again, and advanceto Station 14.

PART TWOJob Task CourseThe Job Task Course consists of 15 activitystations which replicate barriers and obstaclescommonly encountered in law enforcement andtests skill, strength, stamina, and speed neededin basic law enforcement operations. The coursemust be completed within two minutes from thetime the applicant initially touches the first station.Each station must be executed in the mannerindicated in the text provided.

Description and PurposeThis station consists of a log, 40 feet in length, inthe center of the running surface, lying parallel tothe direction of travel. It serves as a test of bal-ance and coordination.ExecutionApproach from the direction of Station 11, steponto log and walk along the top of the log to theopposite end.

DO NOT RUN ALONG THE TOP OF THE LOG.

Description and PurposeThis station consists of a vertical masonry wallrising to a height of six feet above the runningsurface. It simulates walls of similar height andconstruction frequently encountered in businessand commercial districts and enclosed residentialdevelopments.ExecutionApproach from the starting point, grasp top of thewall with both hands, surmount wall, and drop toground on opposite side of the wall, landing onfeet with knees flexed sufficiently to avoid injury.Both hands and both feet may be used in sur-mounting the wall. If unable to execute this stationin three attempts, discontinue course or go aroundthe wall..

Description and PurposeThis station consists of a stationary vertical lad-der with six rungs and a top crossbar rising7-feet above the running surface, a horizontalplatform, and a downward slanting ramp. It simu-lates a variety of obstacles which may beencountered in foot pursuit, including ladders,building parapets, rooftops, and loading ramps.ExecutionApproach from direction of Station 1, ascend lad-der using both hands and feet; climb over topcrossbar of ladder, proceed across platform anddown ramp on foot.

Description and PurposeThis station consists of an area 30 feet long,divided by nylon rope to create 12 individual com-partments on each side of a center dividing line.It serves as a test of agility, coordination, andstamina.ExecutionEnter from the left turn by placing left or right footin the corresponding space of the first pair of com-partments. Continue through grid, stepping alter-nately into each compartment.

EXERCISE CAUTION WHILE STEPPING INTOEACH COMPARTMENT TO AVOID TRIPPING.

Description and PurposeThis station consists of a horizontal overhead lad-der 18-feet long with 12 rungs, approximately7-feet high. It serves as a test of arm and handstrength, coordination, and stamina.

ExecutionApproach from the direction of Station 9; stepcarefully onto crossbar and grasp first rung. Stepoff crossbar and move toward opposite end of sta-tion without coming into contact with the runningsurface by either grasping each successive rungor swinging and grasping every other rung. Exit bydropping to the ground with knees flexed suffi-ciently to avoid injury. Upon exiting Station 10,turn left and follow running surface to the 180-degree turn, turn right 180-degrees, proceed tonext turn, turn left, STOP, and begin Station 11.

Description and PurposeThis station consists of a metal railing approxi-mately three feet tall, at a right angle to the direc-tion of the course. It simulates fixed railings ofsimilar height encountered in many locations.

ExecutionApproach from the direction of Station 2, grasp toprail with both hands and force body weight overrail, landing on both feet on opposite side.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO JUMP OVER RAILWITHOUT USING HANDS.

Description and PurposeThis station consists of a concrete pipe, 8-feetlong, with an inside diameter of three feet. It sim-ulates narrow crawl spaces into which officersmight have to enter in pursuits, rescue efforts,and evidence searches.

ExecutionEnter station from the direction of Station 8 andcrawl through, exiting opposite end.

EXERCISE CAUTION TO AVOID STRIKINGHEAD ON UPPER RIM OF PIPE.

Description and PurposeThis station consists of a panel of woven fence ina tubular steel frame rising approximately fivefeet above the running surface. It simulates chainlink fences and gates frequently encountered infoot pursuit.

ExecutionApproach from the direction of Station 3, grasp toprail of tubular frame while placing foot high in thefence panel. Force body weight over obstacle,landing on both feet on opposite side.

Description and PurposeThis station consists of a concrete wall with awindow opening approximately three feet eightinches above the running surface. It simulateswindow openings in buildings and other struc-tures which may be encountered during footpursuit.

ExecutionApproach wall from the direction of Station 4, enterwindow by placing hands on sill and climbingthrough, landing on feet on opposite side.

DO NOT DIVE THROUGH WINDOW.

Description and PurposeThis station consists of sets of parallel woodenrails controlling direction of travel and requiringtwo 180-degree changes in the degree of travel.It simulates pursuit situations which require quickchanges of direction in confined spaces.

ExecutionTurn right to enter station from the direction ofStation 7, follow course as restricted by rails, turn-ing right 180-degrees, and then turning left 180-degrees. Exit bearing left toward next station.

DO NOT TOUCH RAILS WHILE EXECUTINGTHIS STATION.

Description and PurposeThis station consists of a masonry wall with astandard width door which is hinged on the leftand opens toward the previous station. It simu-lates doors and/or gates which might be encoun-tered during foot pursuit, both of which must bereturned to the closed position after passage, forsecurity, safety, or other reasons.ExecutionApproach closed door from the direction of Station5, grasp knob and pull door open; release knoband pass through opening; grasp knob on oppositeside with same hand, pull door closed engaginglatch mechanism before continuing on course.

KEEP HANDS CLEAR OF DOOR EDGE ANDDOOR JAM AT ALL TIMES.
