Johan Grimonprez is een artiest wiens werk de pure cinema overstijgt, terwijl hij tegelijk toch échte cinema maakt. Zijn interessante carrière in binnen- en buitenland is ronduit indrukwekkend. Johan Grimonprez is een van de weinige kunstenaars die met succes verbindingen opzoekt tussen een museale context en cinema. Producties als Double Take bewijzen dat de regisseur de grenzen van het medium film kan overstijgen. Heel het oeuvre van Grimonprez getuigt van zijn kritische maar genuanceerde stem. Zijn meest recente film Shadow World is voorlopig de kers op de taart, zijn magnum opus. Een essentiële, noodzakelijke, moedige documentaire die de immens complexe realiteit van de internationale wapenhandel blootlegt. Het 736 pagina’s tellende boek van Andrew Feinstein samenballen in 94 minuten film is op zich al een bewonderenswaardige prestatie. De film bovendien visueel interessant maken en erin slagen zijn eigen stem te laten horen, dat is ronduit uniek. De documentaire blijft een moeilijk genre om te financieren. De jury is dan ook blij dat makers als Johan Grimonprez blijven volharden en is benieuwd naar wat volgt.

Johan Grimonprez est un artiste dont le travail dépasse le pur cinéma, alors même qu’il fait pourtant du vrai cinéma. Son intéressante carrière en Belgique et à l’étranger est franchement impressionnante. Johan Grimonprez est l’un des quelques rares artistes à rechercher avec succès des connexions entre le contexte muséal et le cinéma. Des productions comme Double Take prouvent que le réalisateur est capable de dépasser les frontières du média filmé. Toute l’œuvre de Johan Grimonprez témoigne de son ton critique mais nuancé. Shadow World, son film le plus récent, est actuellement la cerise sur le gâteau, son « grand œuvre ». Un documentaire essentiel, nécessaire et courageux qui expose la réalité immensément complexe du commerce international des armes. Faire tenir les 736 pages du livre d’Andrew Feinstein dans un film de 94 minutes est déjà un exploit en soi. Rendre en outre le film visuellement intéressant et réussir à faire entendre sa propre voix en font un projet totalement unique. Le documentaire reste un genre difficile à financer. Le jury est donc heureux que des réalisateurs comme Johan Grimonprez continuent de persévérer, et est curieux de voir la suite.

Johan Grimonprez is an artist whose work transcends pure cinema, while he does make real cinema at the same time. His interesting career at home and abroad is extremely impressive. Grimonprez is one of the few artists who seeks and finds connections between a museum context and cinema. Productions such as Double Take prove that the director can surpass the limits of the film medium. The life's work of Grimonprez bears witness to his critical but nuanced voice. His most recent film Shadow World is currently the cherry on the cake, his magnum opus. An essential, necessary, courageous documentary which exposes the hugely complex reality of the international weapons trade. Condensing the 736-page book by Andrew Feinstein into 94 minutes of film is in itself an amazing feat. On top of that, the fact that the film is visually interesting while he succeeds in making his voice heard is simply unique. The documentary is always a difficult genre to finance. The jury is therefore pleased that makers such as Johan Grimonprez persevere and is keen to see what comes next.
