Motionhouse is one of the UK’s foremost dance theatre companies, touring highly acclaimed and award winning productions to theatres and festivals throughout the world.

Under the strong direction of Kevin Finnan and Louise Richards, we create an extraordinary range of performances. Rooted in dance, our dynamic productions draw on theatre, circus and acrobatics and are acclaimed for striking use of imagery, theatricality and immediate impact.

Since forming in 1988 we have produced eighteen theatre touring productions, a series of shorter outdoor festival pieces and have become renowned for our large-scale dance spectacles in which setting, action and context collide.

We use dance and visual theatre to explore, question and celebrate the relationship between the tangible world of objects, bodies and environments, and the intangible one of images, concepts and cultures. The resulting work is exciting and visually rich, and strives to balance the artistically adventurous with the appealing and accessible.

A wide ranging participatory programme complements and enhances our performance work. We work hard to engage people with dance through a vibrant programme of outreach and community work. Our work is supported by an internationally recognised programme of

dance participation and we are recognised as being leaders in the field of dance education and training.

We have always been based in Leamington Spa and operate all year round. We manage an office and a dance studio as well as an additional warehouse space to house our sets and equipment. The studio is home not just to our creative work and our local participatory programme, but also to a range of other dance and movement-linked classes and the making of work by other practitioners.

We believe that dance is for everyone and that by engaging people with ‘doing’ dance we are more likely to encourage more people to become dance attendees. Audiences have always been central to the Motionhouse vision and practice, as has a ‘joined up’ approach to the various strands of activity, both participatory and performance.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR2011/12 has been a strategically and artistically significant year for Motionhouse. We were commissioned to develop a large-scale multimedia outdoor spectacle, The Voyage, to open the London 2012 Festival in the West Midlands. Created in collaboration with world-renowned Australian physical theatre company, Legs On The Wall, produced by Birmingham Hippodrome and with extraordinary projections from Logela Multimedia from the Basque region of Spain, significant development work on The Voyage took place throughout the year in preparation for launching the London 2012 Festival in our home region in June 2012. The Voyage will be our most ambitious production to date.

Parallel to the development of the content for The Voyage we also planned and began to deliver an extensive professional development project and community participatory programme, Quest. As part of the Quest participatory project we recruited eight apprentice dancers to join our company for The Voyage from March 2012. We also offered 130 performers of all ages from throughout the West Midlands the opportunity to be part of the production. In March our dancers and apprentices, under Kevin Finnan’s direction, began creating material with seven groups from Birmingham Ormiston Academy (BOA), Solihull Youth Dance Company, Stratford-upon-Avon College, Nova Youth Dance Company, Coventry PAS Youth Dance, Playbox Theatre and an

Adult Performance Group based in our Spencer Yard Studio. The participants will go on to perform alongside our dancers and performers from Legs On The Wall in this landmark event.

With new partnerships and new markets in place, particularly with international agents laying the ground for future tours in Asia and America, we began the process of artistic development and promotion for two new touring works, Broken and Captive, planned for 2013.

Scattered enjoyed its third year of touring this year with a series of international performances. In May 2011 we toured to the Macau International Arts Festival followed by a European tour encompassing venues in Belgium, Romania and Portugal plus five more venues in the UK. Our festival shows, Underground and Cascade continued to tour in Europe and the UK during the summer months with 38 performances in the UK and 51 across mainland Europe. Chaser was performed in Macau four times. In total over 34,000 audience members (34,165) enjoyed our three festival shows in nine different countries throughout the year.

A new Machine Dance piece was developed in response to a commission from Bullring Birmingham to launch the opening of the Spiceal Street development in November 2011. Traction followed the two dancer/one digger trio, Waiting Game which was commissioned earlier in

the year to mark the start of the construction of this development. The larger Traction, for three machines and six dancers premiered on 24 November and was seen by nearly 4,000 people. Waiting Game, created in March 2011, was introduced to the festival market and was presented three times at the Greenwich+Docklands International Festival in July.

A new website was launched at the end of 2011 after considerable research and development. The website was created in response to a digital CRM audience engagement project, Arts Nation, which Arts Council England (ACE) invited us to participate in. The website was designed in order to develop greater engagement with, and loyalty from, our online community, and the integration of our social media platforms into the site was introduced in order to encourage deeper interaction and dialogue with our audiences. The website was a resounding success and during the first week of its launch the site received the highest average time spent by our audiences online since our records began.

We witnessed a triumphant climax to the financial year 2011/12 when our Artistic Director was invited to take up the role of Choreographer and Director of Movement for the London 2012 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony.

Scattered was commissioned by Warwick Arts Centre and created with support from Playbox Theatre, Warwick

SCATTERED

Due to exceptional demand Scattered remained in rep for the third consecutive year and embarked on its first ever sell-out long-haul tour. Scattered premiered in Macau, Belgium and Portugal and was invited to return to Romania, this year as part of the Festivalului International de Teatru Povesti in Alba Iulia. Scattered also returned to Warwick Arts Centre, and witnessed enthusiastic crowds on its UK tour in the autumn of 2011.

Scattered combines our trademark highly physical dance theatre and mesmerizing aerial imagery with film and graphics, to create a unique visual production. Performed on a giant curved floor like a snowboard half-pipe, Scattered explores our relationship with water in an ingenious collaboration with Logela Multimedia from the Basque region of Spain.

Scattered delves into the majesty and savagery of water, a fundamental force in our lives. The mix of magical film and daring dancing creates an extraordinary world in which seven dancers plunge into an ocean, tumble down a waterfall, gasp with thirst under a scorching sun and slide on an avalanche to a frozen landscape of arctic beauty in a meteor shower of unlikely moments.

“I was really captivated watching Scattered and

proud that work this good is being made in the

UK… The water issue was wonderfully appropriate without being a forced

message. Congratulations on a sophisticated, energising,

thought-provoking, touchingly beautiful piece of work.”

Our festival pieces are short sharp injections of dance and circus that are devised to be performed in the public arena rather than in the confines of a venue. Our performances fuse images and action and are designed to challenge, as

well as delight our audiences. The shows tour extensively on the international street festival circuit to enormous crowds and critical acclaim.

“Motionhouse is breaking new ground - they have an amazing grasp of the challenges and rewards of outdoor work and have demonstrated great sophistication in their work across different scales: from intimacy to spectacle”Bradley Hemmings | Artistic Director Greenwich+Docklands International Festival

“With Cascade Motionhouse combines a serious subject with high quality artistic performance, leaving festival audiences both stunned and amazed by the tidal wave that has taken place before their eyes”Zone European Arts Project

In 2011 Cascade, our third outdoor festival piece, made premiere appearances in Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany and Ireland as well as appearing in France and touring extensively throughout the UK.

Set on a submerged house amidst rising flood waters, four dancers balance, slide and tumble their way upwards as they scramble to get ahead of the deluge. Cascade combines the very best of dance and acrobatics in a physical and dramatic spectacle, in which the presence of water becomes more pressing and more insistently evident until it sweeps away all before it.

“Really fantastic piece and such simple and effective set design, not to mention breathtaking dancers! It was so good to see such a great piece performed outdoors, the audience were totally gripped and engaged”Underground Audience Member

“Emotive, superbly choreographed, head tingling & totally mesmerising”Underground Audience Member

In its fourth year of touring Underground remained as popular as ever on the festival circuit and toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe.

Performed by four dancers within a rocking tubular structure, Underground uses stunningly physical dance, poignant imagery and surprising

aerial encounters to explore the new reality of train travel. Travellers are thrown together in an unlikely alliance as graffiti artists paint their love in motion. Suspended at odd angles and riding the rhythm of the train, the four characters are constantly drawn together then torn apart in an energetic and thought-provoking piece.

10 Traction was commissioned by Bullring, with support from Arts Council England Arts Nation, H.E. Services and Diggerland

“Awesome! Brilliantly choreographed; beautifully executed - an inspiration and a wonderful piece of theatre”Traction Audience Member

“Traction is perhaps the most perfect fusion of man and machine since Cyberdyne Systems grafted flesh over a metal exoskeleton”Traction Audience Member

Machine Dance is a truly unique performance concept featuring dancers and large construction diggers in a moving and poetic display portraying the strength yet vulnerability of the human form and the unlikely tenderness of the machines.

Since 2004 we have been experimenting with these performances involving dancers and machines. Our interest in this work stems from a fascination with both the extraordinary articulation and expressive capacity of construction machines and also the sensitivity with which they can partner and complement human performers.

Traction is the newest show in our Machine Dance series and was commissioned by Bullring Birmingham as a climactic celebration to launch a new development to the shopping centre complex in November 2011. Traction followed the two dancer/one digger trio, Waiting Game which was commissioned earlier in the year for the ‘Breaking the Ground’ event which marked the start of the construction of the new development.

Traction is a stunning Transformers-esque performance that sees six dancers and three JCB diggers dancing together with extreme acrobatic partnering, animal strength and startling unison phrases.

Traction is a high voltage celebration of the powerful harmony of humans and machines. It is at once impossibly emotive and theatrically unforgettable, defying gravity and suspending disbelief.

Originally created in response to a brief from Bullring Birmingham and with the support of ACE’s Arts Nation initiative to increase public engagement in the arts, Waiting Game featured in our outdoor repertoire for 2011/12. Waiting Game premiered on the street arts festival circuit in July 2011 when it was performed at the Greenwich+Docklands International Festival.

Waiting Game is a highly ingenious piece that explores the coming together of humans and machines to work in harmony. It’s a playful and audacious trio of two dancers and a JCB digger which takes place in a familiar restaurant situation. Turning dining out on its head, the two dancers are waited on by a JCB - but the quality of the service leaves something to be desired!

The diners interweave and collide with the machine in a poetic aerial spectacle that sees them fly high above the crowds, reaching out to a world of possibilities.

LEARNING AND PARTICIPATION

We deliver an extensive participatory programme including workshops for schools, community classes for children and adults in our Leamington Spa studio, professional development for teachers and dancers, access to open rehearsals and work experience placements. Our wide ranging participatory programme both builds links to the local community and complements and enhances the touring performance work nationally and internationally.

In 2011/12 we delivered workshops and educational training throughout the UK and in Macau. We also began an extraordinary participatory project called Quest. Quest offered performers of all ages from the West Midlands the opportunity to be part of the London 2012 celebrations. We were commissioned with Australian physical theatre company Legs On The Wall to create The Voyage, a major outdoor multimedia spectacle, to be produced by Birmingham Hippodrome. The Voyage will form part of the official opening of the nationwide London 2012 Festival celebrating the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Quest participatory project was designed in order for the participants to learn from our professional company and to take part in The Voyage. From March 2012 our dancers created material with seven groups that will go on to perform alongside Motionhouse and Legs On The Wall. The Quest performers were made up of groups from the West Midlands including: Birmingham Ormiston Academy (BOA), Solihull Youth Dance Company, Stratford-upon-Avon College, Nova Youth Dance Company, Coventry PAS Youth Dance, Playbox Theatre and an Adult Performance Group based in our Spencer Yard studio.

As part of the Quest participatory project we also recruited eight dance apprentices to join our company for The Voyage. Four apprentices were recruited from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance and four were young professionals who were employed with funding from the Legacy Trust. The apprentices joined Motionhouse from March 2012 and as well as creating material that would be performed in The Voyage they also assisted in delivering the workshops and supporting the Quest community performance elements. We also developed relationships during this time with Warwickshire College and Coventry University to film the participants and dancers in rehearsals and during performances. The filming began in March 2012 and over seventy film students were given the opportunity to be involved in The Voyage and Quest.

Our 2005/06 production Perfect remained a set piece on the national GCSE curriculum for Dance in England and Wales and our 2007/08 production Driven continued to be a recommended show on the A Level Performance Studies curriculum. Workshops and education resource packs for these shows and our most recent production, Scattered, continued to be in demand throughout the year.

“We firmly believe that there is a fundamental and intrinsic link between the creation of performance work and the leading of participatory projects and the combination of these elements is fundamental to our overall programme.”Kevin Finnan

“I just want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to the Motionhouse dancers that took part in Dance 2 Educate. The event was great and the dance pieces created were all fantastic and well received! ... All the schools really enjoyed having the dancers working with them and found each dancer very professional and inspirational to work with, which really enthused all those who took part”Tina Heeley | Dance 2 Educate Project Manager

“Having Motionhouse as our resident performance company raised the bar of professionalism for our students. Not only were their skills stretched and challenged, but Kevin’s level of professional expectation gave them the opportunity to experience real industry demands. Kevin’s approach was extremely generous and genuine which enabled each individual student to make significant developments as both a choreographer and performer” Henriette Roberts | Brookes Melton College, De Montford University

FINANCIAL SUMMARYSOURCES OF FUNDINGOur touring and education work is funded by Arts Council England West Midlands, by Local Authority Service Agreement, by commissions for new touring productions and by fees from the sale of work to venues and festivals.

ARTS COUNCIL FUNDINGMotionhouse is supported by Arts Council England West Midlands. Confirmation of core funding of £257,315 was received during 2011/12. Motionhouse is a National Portfolio organisation and received confirmation of funding until 2014/15 in March 2011.

WARWICKSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL AND WARWICK DISTRICT COUNCILMotionhouse has an annually reviewed Service Level Agreement with each of the above councils and received fees of £5,300 for the year ending 31 March 2012.

AUDITORS AND ACCOUNTSThe appointed auditors for Motionhouse are Clement Keys of Birmingham. A full set of audited accounts is available upon request.

FINANCIAL CYCLEThe Company operates in a three year cycle – in each three year period activity is phased in order to optimise investment, use resources to their fullest capacity and maximise possible investment in new work, so ensuring excellent production values, and also making best use of the natural touring life of created work.

Typically year one of the cycle is about conserving resources to invest into the creation of new touring work in year two, which then tours during year three and into year one of the next cycle. Since creation of new work requires vastly larger sums to develop the set and materials of the production, and also investment in rehearsal time, dancers’ salaries, rehearsal space etc – new work of the middle scale can only be created once in any three years under current strategic planning.

FINANCIAL REVIEWMotionhouse’s financial objective is to ensure financial stability and continued solvency year on year so that it can maintain its artistic aims and objectives. For the financial year ending 31 March 2012, Motionhouse recorded a small deficit of £9,437 on unrestricted operations and a surplus of £61,269 on restricted operations and the new financial year begins with a balance of £80,000 on designated funds and £32,383 on unrestricted general reserves.

The restricted funds held at the yearend are held in accordance with the terms and conditions under which they were received.

RESERVES POLICY The charitable company needs reserves to provide funds:

To continue to meet strategic objectives if there is any major shortfall in income; To give a breathing space should the company lose a major source of funds; and To continue to run the business if there are any unexpected expenses.

The amount of money required in reserve depends on the stage of the performance ‘life cycle’. For instance, if the company is touring and the dancers are under contract, then the financial consequences of dancer injury are far greater at the beginning than at the end of the tour. The level of free reserves (being those unrestricted reserves not required to fund fixed assets) needed therefore fluctuates both between years and within years. The Company believes that an adequate level of free reserves is between £10k and £30k depending on the level and nature of activity.

The free reserves of the charity as at 31 March 2012 were £14,906, with £80,000 being carried forward as reserves designated to support the company’s next creation year planned for 2013/14.

Our Finance Officer undertakes to report to the board and council historical reserve levels quarterly as part of the review of the management accounts.

Motionhouse’s investment policy is to invest surplus cash balances to maximise interest whilst not exposing the company to risk and taking into account future cash needs

We undertake an annual review of risks taking into account the forthcoming activity and our strategic plans.
