The gift of life is undeniably the most sublime, raw and altruistic expression of our humanness. Being a mother

(or so I’ve heard) is a multifaceted experience hidden with various subtleties and complexities no one prepares you for. Ultimately, it entails inviting a plethora of new and unfamiliar emotions into your world.

My mum is the most inspiring woman in my life. She’s the backbone of our family; she binds us all together in a viscous love so strong, it ensures we feel safe and supported no matter how far apart we are. The depth to which she cares for her family, her career and her community is immeasurable and leaves my head spinning. Her dedication to orchestrating a life rich in morality, growth, teachings and compassion is, I can only hope, embedded in my DNA.

However, I can’t begin to imagine the deeply rooted emotions she’s experienced while being a mother. Emotions that began right at the beginning, when my brother and I were just an idea, then an egg growing inside of her, and then placed into her arms as newborns, both screaming with full heads of hair. Emotions she felt through our younger years, our rebellious ways as teenagers and now into adulthood, with my brother and me creating lives of our own. I admire how juxtaposition has been a common thread in my mum’s manner of loving: vulnerable yet strong, disciplined yet full of unconditional love, encouraging yet open to whatever paths we wished to take and now letting go yet still very much by our sides.

Mothers can nurture life in remarkable ways: carry it in the womb, conceive it in a test tube, adopt or inherit it. Each way is equally challenging and deserving of recognition every day, but especially on Mother’s Day.

To give someone existence on this Earth deserves celebration and appreciation of the highest degree. To be a mum surely should mean to be at the receiving end of cuddles, foot massages, soothing candles, warm cups of tea, chocolate and lavender-scented baths. All mums deserve a moment of peace and quiet contemplation every single day.
