Happy Mother’s Day!
Dear Parishioners,
Summer is fast approaching and the season of Easter is already halfway through! The Easter Season is a 50 day celebration culminating with the feast of Pentecost. Formerly called “Eastertide” this is a time of new life; really Jesus’ life, which “which belongs no more to the earth and which one day we shall share with Him in heaven.” The new life that Jesus brings us is governed by St. Paul’s words to the Colossians: “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.“ (Col 3:1) This means we look toward God’s will for our lives, detach ourselves from merely earthly pleasures “in order to love those of Heaven.” The Holy Spirit, whose coming we celebrate at Pentecost, guides us and forms this new life in us, helping us grow in holiness. This new life means we may be inspired to try new things, change old habits,
give of ourselves, or love in new ways. And above all, that we look to the Holy Spirit, to see where specifically He is calling us to grow in our lives. In the spirit of Easter, I would like you to consider a summer opportunity offered by the Diocese of Lansing for families. It is called a “Family Festival of Faith” to be held on Saturday, June 24th, (the solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist) on the beautiful grounds of St. Francis Retreat Center in Dewitt, MI. This event grew out of Bishop’s Boyea’s pastoral letter “Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord” written several years ago as a response to an urgent need of re-evangelization in our Diocese. The Bishop desires many efforts to attract fallen away Catholics and non-evangelized persons to Jesus and His Church. The FaithFest to be held this summer, is a diocesan-wide event to bring together Catholic families, celebrate the Catholic faith with contemporary Christian bands,

engage in family games, fellowship, and participate in a twilight evening Mass with the Bishop. It is a way to enjoy each other’s company, listen to wholesome Christian pop songs and testimonies, and meet other Catholic families in our diocese. It has been my experience that attending big Catholic events, pilgrimages, and especially public Masses, can be a reinvigorating experience of our faith. Some of the Christian artists featured like Brendan Heath and Sanctus Reel have had powerful conversions in their youth which helped them to open their lives to Jesus and leading a new life. It promises to be a fun filled and spiritual day of praising the Lord, receiving Him in the Eucharist in the evening, and meeting Him in the people we’d encounter. Old St. Patrick will offer group discounted tickets, I believe for $15 a person to the event. If any family would like to go but cannot afford it, please feel free to contact me personally. I plan on attending myself and concelebrating the evening Mass with the Bishop. I know, an event such as this may not be to everyone’s taste, but I am praying for a willing-ness to try to follow the directives of our shepherd, Bishop Boyea, and open ourselves to the larger Church. I am confident that our vibrant and liturgically based faith will remain intact and that we will only gain many spiritual gifts from participating in the life of the diocese. I have been so impressed with how many of our families are open to life and to Catholic teachings and living their faith with fervor. It has been a wonderful five months with you, and I feel I am getting to know all of you better and also growing in my role as administrator and hopefully your future pastor. I have grown fond of celebrating the sacrifice of the Mass ad-orientem, facing the East, on the High Altar, and found it very moving for me as a priest. I have also grown to appreciate the Gregorian
Chant and traditional liturgical music that is all too rare a find in parishes. In my short time, it has been a steep learning curve, with administrative pressures and numerous liturgies. I am learning how to cope with a busy schedule and stress while managing an ongoing anxiety condition, which remains mostly invisible to the public eye. I have been very glad to make small upgrades to the Church; such as a diaper changing station in the Church women’s bathroom, an extra light over the sink in the sacristy and in the closet in the back of the Church, and numerous large equipment upgrades in the Church and parish hall. There are still many projects that call for my attention, main among them is replacing the front steps of the church and repairing and repaving the parking lot. We are also hard at work on building a new web site which will be more informative and friendly, John Pratt is heading up that effort. Not to bore you with too many details, I hope you will all truly experience the Lord this Easter Season, as we go closer to Our Lady of Fatima and honor our Mothers today! May God bless all of our Mothers and strengthen them in their faith and vocations! God bless you! Fr Tom
