Mother Nature CanÕt Stop The Wag-A-Thon.

Mikel’s volunteer service covered justabout everything from volunteer coor-dinator, to serving on the board ofdirectors. Mikel contributed to and participated in every fund-raising eventthat the volunteer group could dreamup. Mikel worked flea markets, bakesales, Paws & Claws, open housesand Kennel Kapers.

Mikel was famous for organizing ourwalk in the Swallow’s Day Parade,where many a dog found a lovinghome after our march down CaminoCapistrano. Mikel would round up allthe volunteers and dogs she couldmuster, hand out cowboy hats andshelter t-shirts, and off we’d go.

Mikel Ewart passed away on January5th after a long and courageous fightagainst cancer. Mikel was part of ourfoundation. A foundation that is rich inhistory. Mikel was part of that history.

Mikel had a passion for life; a zeal andzest that many of us envied. Mikelalways looked like she was on vacationor just returning from one. She wore thebrightest colors, had the rosiest cheeks,a fun laugh and a warm kindness.

The shelter we now know started on asmall abandoned roller skating rink onPico. It started with a dream, a prayerand the blessing of a handful of volun-teers. Mikel Ewart was one of them.

Mikel’s dedication to our animalsbegan in 1988, shortly after the shelter began. Mikel rolled up hersleeves and opened her heart to theabandoned and homeless animals in San Clemente.

Approximately 1600 people, most withtheir pet(s), attended the 13th annualWag-A-Thon. For the first time, thisyear’s attendees were able to pre-reg-ister on line. If the weather had beenbetter, perhaps more people would

have attended. Pet Project Foundationis also pleased that there were moresponsors this year. Although at print-ing the final tally is not in, it looks likeover $44,000 was collected for thecare and maintenance of all the animals at the pro-humane SanClemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter.

Mikel walked dogs, cleaned kennels,answered phones, coordinated volun-teer shifts, did volunteer orientations;whatever it took. Wherever the needwas, Mikel was there with her can-doattitude. She logged over 400 volunteerhours in one year alone.

Like all of those in the foundation andhistory of our shelter, Mikel’s contribu-tions found vet care for many, a warmand caring place to rest a weary soul,and best of all, loving-forever-homesfor the animals she loved so dearly.

It is said that volunteers are guaran-teed a place in heaven. Thank you,Mikel, for 18 years of loving, unselfishservice. There are many wagging tailsthat found bliss because of you.

She changed our lives forever. Fromthe time we saw her sweet face at the harbor.... we made it a habit to goto the harbor to picnic with Saddles.Then we started to feed the harborcats. Saddles was always our favorite.And we couldn’t stand to have herspend another winter outside amongstthe rocks at the harbor. She was thenseven and a half years old.

We brought her home in October of1994. We had her only three weeksand she got out of the house. Panicreigned in our household. And withthat we were introduced to ARF, a�predecessor to PPF. A volunteercalled to give us tips on how to findher and where to look. They evenhelped us look. Three weeks later, thejoyous day came when we found her.Saddles was home again with us andshe became our lap cat. A feral noless. She tamed us. We’d learned tohave cocktails at home with Saddlesrather than the local pub.

Then Bob, my husband, started towalk the dogs at the shelter. He waselected to the ARF Board of Directors.

Then the Wag-A-Thon grabbed myfancy. And then there were more feralcats needing care. They needed to beneutered. It’s been quite consuming,and all this because of Saddles, ourfirst love.

We wished we didn’t have to make the decision for her. We had hopedshe would leave her body quietly andpeacefully. But we couldn’t stand tosee her suffer anymore. She had quiteating, drinking, purring. It was time.She was 19 years old when we saidgood-bye to the prettiest kitty in the world.

We’ll miss her beyond belief. She changed our lives forever.

Shelter Information

Her name is Maggie. She is young, justsix months old. He found her in Illinois,where he started his military training.When he was transferred to Kentucky,he brought Maggie along. Maggie wasthe constant companion in this youngmarine’s life. It wasn’t long before hisnew orders came, off to CampPendleton. In the truck Maggie went,for this new journey to California.

You can’t take dogs to Iraq. And themarine was being deployed. I talked to the shelter manager and she agreed,we would find a home for Maggie. Sheloves squeaky toys, he said, and sheenjoys playing in the sun. He struggledfor composure, handing over Maggie’sleash so we could find her a kennel.

As this strong Marine, off to fight forhis country, headed for his car, hepaused, looked back and sat on thecurb and cried. We will find a lovinghome for Maggie and we hope thisbrave Marine finds his way home too.

Note: As of deadline for this article,Maggie had yet to be adopted.

Maggie And The Marine.

We were closed that day. No cars inthe shelter parking lot, just a few vol-unteers around to walk the dogs andplay with the cats. I was in one of thedog play yards, throwing the ball forone of our more rambunctious shelterdogs. A large white king cab truckpulled in, with a Semper Fi Marineemblem in the rear window. It wasearly, we wouldn’t have been open ona regular day, so I made my way overto inform the driver we were closed.

The dog hopped out first, her tail goinga furious left and right, seeming to say,“I’m with dad and we’re going for a ridein the truck!” She looked young, notquite an Aussie Shephard, not quiteanything really. Just cute and happyand suddenly apprehensive.

“We’re closed”, I said, “can you comeback tomorrow?” He was a marine, hesaid, and no, he couldn’t come backtomorrow, because tomorrow he wason his way to Iraq. Can you take mydog? And then he cried. This largeman, full of duty and honor, had togive up the one thing he cherished.

In spite of the unseasonably coldweather and the occasional cloud burst,the 13th annual Wag-A-Thon opened at8:00am to a waiting crowd of familieswith their dogs. No one was deterred bythe weather. All events took place, thebazaar was bustling with vendors andshoppers, and people ate hot dogs,drank coffee and nibbled on goodiesfrom the food booth. When it rained,the umbrellas appeared and when it stopped they disappeared. Even some of the dogs had their own little umbrellas.

A special thank you needs to go to all the volunteers who braved the elements to be on site between6:00am and 7:00am, to set up. Theyput up fencing, directional signs, setup tables, registered people, gavethem goody bags and much more.They worked through the cold and the rain the whole day, never missing a beat!

Recently there has been a lot of inves-tigation into pet stores and independentbreeders who sell smuggled animalsfrom south of the border. It is very easyfor unscrupulous breeders, and pet storeowners to be seduced by the hugemargins available in the illegal animalmarket. So they quickly turn a deaf earand blind eye to the contagious andoften deadly diseases and viruses theseanimals often carry. Spreading conta-gious disease can be as simple aspetting a puppy in a pet shop owner’swindow, having it lick your hand, andthen transferring that disease to yourown pet. Reputable pet shops purchaseonly documented animals from breedersof good reputation and have meticulousrecords of all the animal’s breeding,vaccinations, and health treatments.

Animal smuggling to many may be seenas “not a big deal”, but what they failto realize is that this is only the tip ofthe iceberg. The smuggling of exoticbirds and animals leads to the dimin-ishment and often extinction of certainbreeds in specific areas where thesmugglers concentrate. Even moreheinous, is the transporting and smug-gling of endangered species. Whenpeople realize illegal exotic birds andanimals are available, it is not longbefore endangered species are solicitedfrom these disreputable outlets.

A far better choice is adoption of asound and healthy pet from your localanimal shelter. This not only diminishesthe above illegal activities, but adoptionis a great social endeavor and learningexperience for the entire family. Animalsreceived by the shelter are healthchecked, assessed, and cared for insignificantly better environments thanthat of many pet shops where a dozenor more animals vie for space incramped quarters. For the benefit ofus all, please check and verify all cur-rent health records associated withthe purchase of any animal you bringinto your home and neighborhood.

Shelter animals are neutered and micro-chipped before being adopted. Thevast array of loving, checked, verified,and healthy pets available at yourlocal shelter will surpass any breederor pet shop. Many have the miscon-ception that a dog and not a smallpuppy will somehow not acclimate to their home or children, but experi-ence shows that a pet’s characteristicsare much easier to recognize when thepet has matured, rather than when itis a pup and exhibits little character.The expert staff with years of experi-ence will match you, your family, and children with the most loving, appropriate, and ideal pet.

Sage Pfeiffer is a beautiful fourth gradestudent with a love of animals and apassion for helping them. Her mothersays her passion to help animals does-n’t stop there, she also enjoys helpingothers. A year ago she collected donations for the shelter at her brotherReilly’s tee ball game. She counted $30,so decided to add another $5.00 of herallowance money. With great pride andjoy she brought the $35 to the shelterwhere she met some of the many volunteers and realized how much herdonation was appreciated. Sage’smother says: “We feel it is so importantfor children to know that they can makea difference with their efforts and ideasin helping others.”

This year Sage did something a littledifferent. Following, is a letter shetyped for her teacher and class. Withpermission from her teacher, Sagepassed out the letter to her class-mates. The results were she collectedthree bags of toys and $50. All in twoweeks. She again donated most of herallowance and got her brother to dothe same. Sage was thrilled andexcited with her success; how happythe animals would be. Sage’s proudfamily shared her excitement.

Hi my name is Sage Pfeiffer, and I loveanimals. A lot of you have a pet athome. But not all pets have a home.That is why I like to help out the SanClemente Animal Shelter. I have raisedmoney for the animal shelter before withmy allowance and other donations.

Now I would like to ask for your help.The animal shelter always needs toysfor the animals and money for foodand supplies. Please help me in raisingmoney and collecting new toys for theanimals. The animals really need yourhelp right now!

I will be dropping off all the toys anddonations I collect on February 2nd.

A ChildÕs Love For AnimalsBy Ruth Rosen

Early in the morning of March 5, a newrabbit at our shelter gave birth to ninebabies. The mother, Pippin, came to ourshelter with a debilitating infection, andimmediately started treatment. After the first week, to the surprise to all, she gave birth to seven babies whosurvived. Quite an amazing feat forthese baby rabbits, especially sincethey had inherited the infection fromtheir mother.

The baby rabbits are now in foster care,where they will be raised by their motheruntil approximately eight weeks of age.Once the babies are weaned, they willundergo treatment for the infectionthey got from Pippin. Between twelveand sixteen weeks of age, the youngrabbits will be spayed or neutered. By mid-June to early July, these youngbunnies will be ready to go to theirnew homes!

Pet Project Foundation is dedicated toproviding care and medical treatmentfor all animals that come to our shelter;whether they are dogs, cats, or rabbits.If you would like to help us providefunding for the care of these baby rabbits, please contact PPF.

As for the guy that owned her beforeme, I’m extremely sorry to hear he wentto jail. But he would be very happy toknow that his little buddy has gone toa safe and comfortable new home. She is beyond treated as a Queen.

I live downtown Los Angeles, in a beautiful building surrounded with abunch of artists that work from home.Maggie is the only dog in the buildingand is showered with tons of attentionfrom everyone. We all love her. Someoneis always around and Maggie visitsdifferent lofts on a daily routine to gether hugs and kisses. She loves goingto the courtyard in the mornings whileI drink my coffee, she greets everyone, plays ball and basks in the sun. Everyday we go for walks to the park, she’sa very friendly dog and everyone onthe street absolutely loves her. We’vemet a lot of new friends. In the eveningswe all gather in the courtyard for cocktails after Maggie has her dinner.Once again she has a chance to playball and get plenty of love from all the neighbors. She adores everyone andwe all adore her.

Maggie is extremely well trained andobeys on command. She knows notto get on any of the furniture except formy bed at night; she sleeps with me.She is completely house trained andgoes to the front door every time sheneeds to go out.

Hi everyone, this is Jennifur and JuJu,formerly known as Judas and we wouldlike to tell you what is going on with us.

Jennifur– Well I am the typical GIRLWITH AN ATTITUDE, and if you messwith me I am going to let you knowwhere you stand with me with a growlor a spit. I have a few thank you’s that I would like to tell some people at thefoundation and the shelter. First thankyou for rescuing me and getting me offof the streets where someone couldhave hurt me. Second, to the lady thatkept trying to socialize me, when I hadan attitude with her. She kept tryingand she almost won me over. I am justa shy little kitty that never knew thatshe could trust human beings andknow that they could love me. Third,thank you to Valerie for trusting herinstinct and allowing me to go live withmy dad. I enjoy my time outside in thesun and when I am cold I go to myusual cage and get in the cat carrierthat has a nice warm heating pad tokeep me warm.

JuJu– Hey everybody I am the moreactive of the two of us and love to getmy feet off of the ground, via a bush,tree or some cat trees where I can geton the same level as dad so he canscratch my neck. I had you all fooledthinking I was mean, but as they say I was just a FRAIDY CAT and no onehad treated me very nicely, before coming to the shelter. You know I surprised dad this last week by goingin his bedroom while he was watchingTV and laying down next to him. Now,sometimes I stay in his bedroom andjust enjoy the scratching that he givesmy neck and just lay next to him andpurr overnight. Sometimes Jennifur andI rent a condo, but have to fight whowill get the upper bunk. I usually losebecause she has a bad attitude.

A Letter From TheHappy Cats.

On March 4th, four of our shelter dogshad a special outing. They marched inthe Festival Of Whales parade in DanaPoint. Lead by shelter volunteers, theyproudly walked down Pacific CoastHighway, from Selva road to GoldenLantern. Mason one of our longestshelter residents, having arrived inNovember of 2003, was one of thefour dogs to march. What a joy for himto see other people and dogs andindulge in new smells. This was a realtreat for him! Not only that, but Masonhas a congenital defect with one of hispaws, so occasionally he only uses 3of his legs to walk. We brought along awagon for him, just in case he becametired. Jim his handler said, “I think I'llneed the wagon before he will, I can'tkeep up with him!” Our vets haveassured us that Mason’s paw does notcause him pain, nor does it slow himdown. Besides Mason; Sylvia, Chinaand Blaze participated in the walk.

All our shelter dogs wore their “adoptme” jackets, but maybe the print wastoo small, because all 4 of them arestill at the shelter. Volunteers, Lupeand Tami Connor brought China andSylvia. Lupe said, “they loved the carride!” Volunteer Esther Horn, whobrought Blaze, walked him back to thestart point after the parade, for a littleadditional exercise. Besides the shelterdogs, we had 16 volunteers with 9 oftheir dogs. Paula Becker made andcarried a “please spay and neuter your pets” sign. We hope everyone will comply.

Winnie;We adopted Winnie in August of2002. She had been one of a litterof 5 puppies born to a beautifuldog the Shelter named Madame X.We went to the Shelter everyweekend to just get a look atMom and her puppies until wewere granted the honor of takingone home. Winnie’s Shelter namewas Wildflower and she was oneof the two white female pups inthe litter. Winnie has truly madeour house a home. She is the first pet I have had such a strongattachment with. My husband and daughter receive lots of lovefrom her too, but she is my baby.Thank you so much for all the Shelter does to give these creatures a home.
