Moss disturbs the flow of rainwater on roof surfaces. It tends to thrivewhere the supply of moisture is best and establishes itself in lapsparticularly at the tail end. During heavy rain, the lap cavities will overflowinside the building. Most roofs have a notional second line of defence inthe form of a bituminous felt, but it does not always perform perfectly, andis not designed for long term protection.

The battens and fixings, situated above the felt undergo accelerateddecay. Moss and lichen release small amounts of organic acids that iscorrosive to metals, particularly lead and galvanised components.

Lichen have evolved to etch themselves onto mineral surfaces:They produce the organic acids to do this. Roofing slates with “greenspots” – high carbonate content areas – are somehow susceptible tosurface damage.

How long does MossGo take to act?MossGo is a “soft” and gentle treatment designed to remove growthsafely without causing damage to external surfaces. It starts to actimmediately and usually begins to produce results within 24 hours.But some organisms will take a little more time to wither away.Although it takes longer than mechanical roof cleaning, methods such aspower jetting or scraping, it produces better results and with no damageto roof surfaces.

Moss usually begins to wither within 24 hours. Moss balls will usually startfalling down within a few days depending on the exposure to wind andrain. A wire balloon or trap should be fitted at down pipe inlets to preventblockage.Algae dies almost immediately. If the layer is thick, a white discolourationtakes place within a day or so. Dead algae is rapidly dispersed. Red algae can be cleaned from rendered external surfaces often found incoastal environments.Lichen are well-encrusted and take a little longer to fall away. Dead lichenbecome soggy with rain, and curl when dry. After many cycles they finallydrop. Cleaning lichen without damaging the substrate is a patientundertaking. Dark background discolouration on concrete tiles washesaway over a period of several weeks.

Environmental footprintMossGo is a fast degrading product. Just 48 hours after application,about 85% of the active has already broken down. There is no durableenvironmental footprint. Short lived as it is, MossGo is nevertheless apowerful algaecide and concentrate and should not be allowed to spillinto watercourses. If spray drift is likely to be a problem, then cleaningtiles on windy days should be avoided.

Self-Cleansing:Frost and snow will help in the self-cleaning after treatment.

PreparationCleaning lichen and algae do not require preparation. Small moss ballsare easy to soak, and will not require removing beforehand. Larger lumpsof moss are best removed before treatment. Under trees or shaded areas,sweeping the growth away is the best option for a consistent result.

MaterialsMossGo is effective on PVC membranes, metal, clay and concrete tiles,natural and man-made slate, asphalt, polycarbonate, glass, woodshingles etc. MossGo does not contain agents aggressive to materialsused in construction.

Safety at workThe issue of safety at work is paramount to roof maintenance. Each sitehas to be evaluated and safe working methods established. A lowpressure telescopic boom can be used for spraying from a roof laddersituated in the centre of a dwelling size roof.
