LarvicideNumber one, larvicide is typically non-toxic to any other living organism outside mosquito larvae. Secondly, mosquitoes are at their highest concentration and easiest to control in the water.

Let’s first look at Altosid. It's a granular material and functions as an "IGR" or Insect Growth Regulator.

To apply Altosid you simply sprinkle it into the larval habitat where it sinks to the bottom and starts dissolving. It doesn't take much do the job. Seven granules will treat an average birdbath. IGR's work by upsetting the larval hormonal balance causing it to die in the pupal stage.

The second larvicide we use is the BTI brand of mosquito dunks or briquettes. It functions by means of microbial bacteria. You apply it to the larval habitats as necessary and it only takes about a quarter of a dunk to treat an average birdbath.

BTI dunks or briquettes work a little differently than Altosid. They work by bacteria attacking the larval digestive system making it sick and it dies. This material is effective for about three weeks from the date of treatment. And like Altosid these dunks are not toxic to aquatic or mammal life.

Backpack Mist Blower Tips

Always apply the mist in a slow up and down sweeping motion,never side to side. The up and down motion dramaticallyImproves the uniformity of the application from the bottomof the application area to the highest point.

When properly applied with the mist blower the adulticide should leave the surface of foliage just slightly and uniformly damp. Over wetting foliage is unnecessary and under no circumstances should adulticide be dripping off anything in the treated area.

One of the most common application mistakes is standing too close to the foliage being treated. This can result in a narrow dense mist pattern and an uneven application resulting in over and under wetting of foliage.

When walking from one treatment area to another with the backpack mist blower running, always turn off the flow of solution to reduce avoidable waste.

Observation and Surveillance in the Customers Yard

Any good mosquito management program starts off with observation and surveillance. It is one of the reasons is the very first thing you do when you get to customers home is walk around that home. You're looking for a mosquito habitat both in and out of the yard. The mosquito habitat you find in the yard you either eliminate or manage with larvicide.

Any potential mosquito habitat you see outside the yard you make yourself a mental note to treat that side of the yard with an extra heavy coat of barrier spray to try to stop those mosquitoes from coming into the yard.

The “SECRET” Of MOSQUITO SPECIALISTS

First we find all the mosquito breeding areas in the customer’s yard down to the smallest pockets of standing water and drain the ones we can and treat, with larvicide, the ones we can’t. This keeps mosquitoes from reproducing around the customer’s house and creating an ongoing problem that will never allow us to satisfy that customer.

Next we kill the adult mosquitoes in the yard with adulticide sprayed in and around all the harboring or hiding areas that the adults use to avoid predators and environmental elements. Now if this is all we did the yard would only stay mosquito free for 24 to 48 hours. New mosquitoes would fly back into the yard and within two to three days be just as much of a problem as ever.

Mosquito Specialists gives us the ability to keep a backyard mosquito free for up to three weeks because we first break the lifecycle of the mosquito. Then we use a mild primary adulticide which is also a very powerful mosquito repellent that mosquitoes can’t tolerate. By applying the material to all their resting and hiding places in our customer’s yard we kill the mosquitoes that are in the yard and any new mosquitoes are forced to find their hiding and resting areas, as well as their blood meals, elsewhere for the next three weeks.
