GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP)—After years of investigation, denialsand delays, jury selection beganThursday for the criminal trial offormer presidential candidate JohnEdwards.Edwards sat at the defense table
as about 180 potential jurors filedinto a Greensboro, N.C., courtroom.U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Ea-gles then asked Edwards to stand
and face them. He grinned and nod-ded as the judge introduced him.The trial had been scheduled to
begin in late January, but was de-layed after Edwards’ lawyers toldthe judge he had a serious heartproblem that required treatment.Compared with the quick-smilingcandidate of four years ago, the for-mer U.S. senator, now 58, appearedslightly gaunt in the cheeks but still
had no trace of gray in his carefullyparted hair.Edwards faces six criminal counts
related to nearly $1 million in secretpayments made by two campaigndonors to help hide the married De-mocrat’s pregnant mistress as hesought the White House in 2008.“This is not a case about whether
Mr. Edwards was a good husband orpolitician,” the judge said from the
bench. “It’s about whether he vio-lated campaign finance laws. ... TheConstitution says trial by jury, nottrial by Internet or trial by gossip.”Edwards’ parents and eldest
daughter sat in the court as Eaglesemphasized to the potential jurorstheir role in the upcoming trial andordered them not to tell anyone, even their families, that they hadbeen called for the Edwards case.
She also advised them to put out oftheir minds any media coveragethey had seen and to ignore anylegal dramas they might have seenon television, because such showsmay mischaracterize the law or howa courtroom operates.“You can watch Law & Order,
Judge Judy, John Grisham; put it outof your mind,” Eagles said. “I willtell you what the law is.”

WASHINGTON (AP)—The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage droppednear its all-time low thisweek, making home-buyingand refinancing a bargain forthose who can qualify.Mortgage buyer Freddie
Mac said Thursday that therate on the 30-year loan fellto 3.88 percent from 3.98 per-cent. That’s just above therate of 3.87 percent reachedin February, the lowest sincelong-term mortgages beganin the 1950s.The 15-year mortgage, a
popular option for refinanc-ing, plunged to a fresh low of3.11 percent from 3.21 per-cent last week. The previousrecord of 3.13 percent was hitlast month.Mortgage rates are lower
because they tend to trackthe yield on the 10-yearTreasury note. Last week’sdisappointing report onMarch job growth led moreinvestors to sell stocks andbuy Treasurys, which are con-sidered safer investments. Asdemand for Treasurys in-creases, the yield falls.Yet the low rates are un-
likely to draw in many morepeople looking to buy a homeor to refinance their mort-gage.Some would-be buyers are
still skeptical about purchas-ing a home with prices stillfalling.
