ABOUT THE MORRIS
Listed on the National Historic Register, the Morris was built in 1922 as the Palace Theatre. Designed using a mix of lavish architectural styles including Italian Renaissance, Spanish Revival and Baroque, the theatre is rich in exquisite detail: hand-painted cherubs, crystal chandeliers, Versailles-style arches and ornate plaster moldings. A hand-stenciled and gilded blue dome crowns the theatre, rising 65 feet above the audience. Built as a vaudeville house, The Palace Theatre also played silent movies and later, “talkies.” It has been the home to two world premieres, including Knute Rockne: All American in 1940, which brought 24,000 fans to the Palace doors. Rock and roll took the Morris stage in the ‘60s and ‘70s with such acts as James Brown, Pure Prairie League and Frank Zappa and the Mothers of
Invention. The South Bend Symphony Orchestra and the Broadway Theatre League also maintained residence in the theatre. After 70 years, the Morris began to show its age and it became apparent that it was in need of a brand new stage house and a complete renovation and restoration. In 1991, the City of South Bend and South Bend Entertainment, Inc., embarked on a public/private partnership to raise the funds needed for the renovation of the Morris. Construction began in March 1998, and was completed in February 2000. It also boasts upgraded technical equipment and enlarged performance and backstage spaces, as well as a completely restored interior.

Located between Chicago, Fort Wayne, Detroit and Indianapolis, the South Bend/Mishawaka Designated Market Area ranks 77th in the nation, 2nd behind Indianapolis in the State of Indiana. The population within a 25 mile radius of South Bend exceeds 500,000 and within a 45 minute drive, the population figure approaches a million! A recent study of this marketing area reported the mean age to be between 18 and 49 with annual retail sales in excess of $8.1 billion. The South Bend International Airport supports more than 120 scheduled daily flights for 10 airlines. Two bus lines and the Chicago South Shore Railroad also operate out of the transportation complex. Five rental car agencies are located in the terminal. Five major highways lead into South Bend, including the I-80/90 Toll road. US 933 runs directly into the center of South Bend and the loading docks of the Morris.

on Main St. All day parking is $3, event parking is $5. Garage hours on non-show days are 7am –
7pm. The garage extends operating hours on event days.
Street parking on Main Street or Colfax Avenue is limited to one hour between 6am and 6pm.

Control Booth An approximately 6’ deep by 20’ wide control booth is located in the center of the main floor, against the back wall. It is surrounded by a 3’ tall half-wall with an 8” ledge. It takes a 150’ snake to reach from backstage.

The cities of South Bend and Mishawaka are located in St. Joseph County, Indiana. St. Joseph County is located in the center of Northern Indiana, the Michigan Border is to the North, Laporte County borders the west and Elkhart County borders the east. The area is popularly known as “Michiana”. The “Michiana” area, encompassing 10 counties, has a population of approximately one million . To be precise, St. Joseph County is located 100 miles east of Chicago, 5 miles south of Michigan/Indiana Border, 138 miles north of Indianapolis, 80 miles west of the Ohio/Indiana border and 15 miles east of the Central/Eastern Time Zone Boundary. The Morris Performing Arts Center is located in the center of South Bend, accessed by Business 31/33. AIRPORTS: South Bend International Airport is located 3 miles from downtown South Bend.
