We can tend to get bogged down with the daily events of our lives and we are looking for more time to accomplish things. It is like when we organize our desks, that certain room that has gotten out of control or even donated items we no longer use to a charity, etc. We feel so much better and say, “How did I ever let things get to this point?” Plain and simple, it happens. Life happens. Then the most awesome thing occurs, God gently nudges us to remind us of our blessings, puts us back into place where we need to be. Pastor Dan reminded us in his sermon Sunday about how when we veer off the path at times and it changes our direction. Then we need to stop for a moment and re-orientate ourselves. So true! I have the honor and blessing to lead chapel for our Preschool on Mondays and Tuesdays and this past week I was talking with the kids about George Washington and chopping down the cherry tree (because of Washington’s birthday) and how he lied to his father. After telling his dad he didn’t chop down the tree George fessed up and said he did it, and George’s father forgave him. Each day I have six chapel helpers, so, I gave them each a picture, three had trees, two had George chopping down a tree and one had a tree standing tall with fruit. I stood behind them and said, tree, tree, tree, chopped tree, chopped tree, said sorry, new tree. I explained that is how forgiveness works with Jesus. Once we say I am sorry we are forgiven and are new. The simplicity comes right here…a boy stood up and said AGAIN. So I did…tree, tree, tree, chopped tree, chopped tree, said sorry, new tree. Then a chorus of kids said AGAIN. I did this about four times. What made me smile was this concept of simple faith, the simple things and simple explanations which can help remind us of the magnitude of God’s grace and mercy he showers upon us each and every day, if we pay attention, recognize and claim them. Listen to a child pray or explain something and that will change your perspective. Grace and Peace Samantha

WEEKLY MESSAGE: by Samantha Wesley

Greetings!

I was pondering this past week about the word simplicity. In the Merriam-Webster

dictionary simplicity is defined “as the state of being simple, uncomplicated, or

uncompounded.” In our adult lives there are things and events that become very

complicated and frustrating. We can tend to get bogged down with the daily events of

our lives and we are looking for more time to accomplish things. It is like when we

organize our desks, that certain room that has gotten out of control or even donated

items we no longer use to a charity, etc. We feel so much better and say, “How did I

ever let things get to this point?” Plain and simple, it happens. Life happens. Then the

most awesome thing occurs, God gently nudges us to remind us of our blessings, puts us

back into place where we need to be. Pastor Dan reminded us in his sermon Sunday

about how when we veer off the path at times and it changes our direction. Then we

need to stop for a moment and re-orientate ourselves. So true!

I have the honor and blessing to lead chapel for our Preschool on Mondays and

Tuesdays and this past week I was talking with the kids about George Washington and

chopping down the cherry tree (because of Washington’s birthday) and how he lied to

his father. After telling his dad he didn’t chop down the tree George fessed up and said

he did it, and George’s father forgave him. Each day I have six chapel helpers, so, I gave

them each a picture, three had trees, two had George chopping down a tree and one had

a tree standing tall with fruit. I stood behind them and said, tree, tree, tree, chopped tree,

chopped tree, said sorry, new tree. I explained that is how forgiveness works with Jesus.

Once we say I am sorry we are forgiven and are new. The simplicity comes right

here…a boy stood up and said AGAIN. So I did…tree, tree, tree, chopped tree,

chopped tree, said sorry, new tree. Then a chorus of kids said AGAIN. I did this about

four times. What made me smile was this concept of simple faith, the simple things and

simple explanations which can help remind us of the magnitude of God’s grace and

mercy he showers upon us each and every day, if we pay attention, recognize and claim

them. Listen to a child pray or explain something and that will change your perspective.

Walkertown Elementary School invites YOU to visit the school on Thursday, March 7th between the hours of 9am and 2pm for a tour of the school. You will have the opportunity to

volunteer to read to classes or share why reading is important to you. Walkertown Elementary is trying to create lifelong readers. Let’s be a part of the community and read to make a

difference. For more information, please call Barbara Cohen at 595-2311 or email her

[email protected].

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY...

“TEACH ME LORD”

Week 2 - Week of February 24th: “Teach Me Lord”

Scripture: Psalm 27 Symbol: Bible

Read Psalm 27, reflect on the passages and what images come to mind? How did this passage

speak to you? Make a list of what God does for us. Are there images from this passage that have meaning to your family? List those as well. What do the images teach us about God?

The Psalms are songs. Some are songs of praise. Others are songs of longing and sorrow for

God. Some are songs of joy. Try writing a Psalm this week. Choose an image of God that you wrote down on your list. If you feel more comfortable drawing instead of writing, draw

the image. Allow God to open your heart and mind to the endless possibilities that are placed

before us each and every day.

The Children of Morris Chapel have been actively helping others. In the Fall they made 26 Fruit Baskets for the Heritage Members, 200 Placemats for the Community Thanksgiving

Luncheon, and 32 Snack Bags for the Meal on Wheels recipients . They also decorated treat bags and created 75 special Christmas cards for the Bethesda Center. In addition to helping

assemble all the wonderful boxes for Operation Christmas Child and sending 60 specially

decorated Snowmen out to brighten someone’s day.

Recently, the Children delivered hand decorated “Comfort blankets” to three of our Heritage

Members. The amount of love continued to show as the children made 32 Valentine Treat bags for Meals on Wheels, 24 Valentine Cards for the Heritage Members and 55 Cards and Small

Treat bags for Creekside Manor.

Upcoming events include additional Comfort Blankets and Easter Baskets for Heritage

Members, Blessing Bags for the Homeless and special cards with visits to an Assisted Living

Facility.

The Children have a gift to serve and are being good stewards. We appreciate the support of their families and assistance in bringing them to events such as JAM, Children’s Church on

Sunday, and our special delivery events.

LAY PERSON OF THE YEAR

It is that time of year again when we nominate and recognize the individual(s) for Lay

the emails and return it to me by Sunday, March 17th. This forms will also be available

in the Sunday School classrooms, and may be found as a PDF on the Morris Chapel

website accompanying this issue of Chapel Echoes.

The Lay Person of the Year nomination was established to celebrate contributions made

by an individual to the local church. Nominations are reviewed and a selection is made by

a committee consisting of the Lay Leader, Assistant Lay Leader, and Associated Lay

Leaders. In order for a nomination to be considered, the nominee(s) must have been a full

member of Morris Chapel United Methodist Church for at least one year. Other factors to

be considered but not limited to would be active in Sunday School, active in the church, a

member of any committees, work behind the scenes in the Children’s Department, youth

leaders, Sunday School teachers, or simply accepts tasks and responsibilities when asked.

Thank you...Brad Cook.

Update from Staff-Parish Relations Committee

Hiring a Director for Youth Ministry

SPRC has been aggressively seeking a Director for Youth Ministry at Morris Chapel.

Thus far, we have held 2 interview sessions with representatives from our youth parents,

youth and all SPRC members.

During the first interviews, we did not find a candidate that we believed met the needs

of our youth and our church.

At the direction of SPRC, Pastor Dan extended employment offers to both candidates who were interviewed during the second interview session. Unfortunately, both candidates

declined our offer. One declined due to economic reasons and the other had three offers

and chose another offer.

SPRC met Monday February 11th and will be continuing this process and are reviewing

additional applications that have been submitted since the second interview process began.

Pastor Dan and SPRC want to thank you all for your continued support. Please

continue to pray for our current staff, SPRC, our youth and this process.

With sincere thanks,

SPRC and Pastor Dan
