What is Presentation Studio?

Presentation Studio is the Morningstar tool for creating custom presentations. With flexible charting and reporting capabilities, and access to Morningstar databases, Presentation Studio helps you communicate the data behind investments. You have control over both the content and format of your presentations, enabling you to use charts, tables, images, and text to tell your story.

Before proceeding to the Presentation Studio features described in this document, please read Introduction to Presentation Studio.

In Presentation Studio, how can I customize plot shapes and colors in an X/Y Scatter Plot chart?

To customize the plot shapes and colors in an X/Y Scatterplot chart, do the following:

1. Open or create a portfolio report.

2. In the report, select or create a cell to hold an X/Y Scatterplot chart.

Note: Depending on the content of the report, you might need to first create a new page.

When you select a cell or component, it displays a blue border.

3. From the Component Bar, select the X/Y Scatter Plot icon and drag it to the selected cell.

When you select a component icon, it displays a image representing that component.

When you release the mouse, the X/Y Scatter Plot is displayed in the cell and reflects the Risk-Reward data of the portfolio, its benchmark, and the calculation benchmark.

Drag the icon to the empty cell.

4. With the component selected, click the Chart Settings menu. The Chart Settings window opens. Note that the Chart tab is selected.

5. To display the portfolio’s holdings on the drop-down field, from the Display menu, select Portfolio and Holdings (1st visible portfolio). This will help you understand how each investment contributes to the portfolio’s overall position.

Click here to display the Chart Settings.

With this selection, the chart will display markers for the portfolio and its holdings.




6. Select the Display tab.

7. From the Plot Overlay Color drop-down field, select the color you want to use for the markers representing the portfolio’s holdings.

8. From the Plot Overlay Marker drop-down field, select the size you want to use for the markers.

Click here to select the Display tab.

In this demonstration, a large circle is used.




9. In the upper-right corner of the Chart Settings window, click the X to close the window. In the X/Y Scatter Plot, markers representing the portfolio and its holdings display the color and shape you selected.

Because you selected Portfolio and Holdings (1st visible portfolio), the calculation benchmark is no longer displayed.


In Presentation Studio, how can I configure the sort options in a pie chart’s legend?



A Pie Chart component shows the portfolio’s allocation. When displaying asset allocation, the legend displays the assets’ weights with the highest weight first. You can change the sort options to alphabetical, either ascending or descending.

To configure the sort options in a pie chart’s legend, do the following:

1. In the report, create a cell to hold a pie chart.

Note: Depending on the content of the report, you might need to first create a new page.

2. From the Component Bar, select the Pie Chart icon and drag it to the selected cell.

Drag the icon to the empty cell.




3. With the component selected, click the Chart Settings menu. The Chart Settings window opens. Note that the Chart tab is selected.

4. From the Sort By menu, select Alphabetical.

Note the highlighted selections.




5. When you selected Alphabetical, the Order By option for Ascending was automatically selected. If you want to legend to sort Z to A, select Descending.

6. In the upper-right corner of the Chart Settings window, click the X to close the window.

The Ascending option sorts from A to Z.

The legend is now sorted alphabetically in ascending or descending order, depending on your Order By selection.


In Presentation Studio, how can I display the Morningstar Sustainability Rating in a Performance Reporting table?



To display the Morningstar Sustainability Rating in a Performance Reporting table, do the following:

1. Open a report, and select or create an empty cell.

Note: A selected cell or component displays a blue border.

2. In the header, make sure the Home tab is selected. Click Table > Performance, then drag Performance Reporting to the empty cell.

3. With Performance Reporting table selected, click the down arrow on the second column heading (B). A menu opens. From the Find By menu, select Sustainability. The menu changes to display Sustainability data points.


Data points are grouped by column sets.




4. From the list of Sustainability data points, select Morningstar Sustainability Rating.

5. Click Add. In the table, Morningstar Sustainability Rating replaces column B.

Select this data point.

This fund has a below average Morningstar Sustainability Rating, represented in the table by two globes.

In Presentation Studio, how can I show a target date glide path?

As target-date funds have become more popular, you might need a way to show allocations over time. The Glide Path component allows you to illustrate the asset allocation breakdowns of a product family.

Do the following:

In Presentation Studio, how can I change the sort options in a Performance Reporting table?



In a Performance Reporting table, you can configure primary and secondary sort options.

Do the following:



2. In the header, make sure the Home tab is selected. Click Table > Performance, then drag Performance Reporting to the empty cell.

3. With the Performance Reporting table selected, at the bottom of the window, click Table Settings. The Table Settings window opens.

4. Select the Display tab.

5. In the Primary Sort area, note that the default selection is Investment Order. From the Primary Sort menu, select a different option.

6. In the Secondary Sort area, note that the default selection is also Investment Order. From the Secondary Sort menu, select a different option.






7. In each Order By area, select Ascending or Descending.

8. In the upper-right corner of the Table Settings window, click the X to close the window.

Each sort can be ascending or descending.


In Presentation Studio, how can I compare investments with different dates for most recent data?


In Presentation Studio, how can I compare investments with different dates for most recent data?

Investments in the Morningstar database have different dates of “most recent” data; for instance, a weekly fund and a daily index. Suppose the weekly fund’s most recent return date was last Friday, and the daily index’s most recent date was yesterday (Wednesday). When comparing them, instead of using each instrument’s most recent return data, the Common Return End Date setting uses the last date on which both instruments released data (in this case, last Friday). Values from the same date give you a more accurate comparison.

Do the following:

1. Open a report with instruments having different return dates.

2. Select (or create) a component with start and end dates.

3. From the End Date drop-down field, select Common Return End Date.

4. The Rolling Returns chart now displays the data based on the common return end date.

The Rolling Returns chart reflects the Last Month End date.

Common Return End Date is at the bottom of the menu.

Note the difference when evaluated with a common end return date.

How can I view the Morningstar Sustainability Rating for a model portfolio?

The new Sustainability Ratings component allows you to view the Morningstar® Sustainability RatingTM for custom portfolios so you can better understand their ESG exposure and competitive strengths, and share the information with clients.

How can I compare the Morningstar Sustainability Rating for multiple portfolios, client accounts, or proposals?

In the new Sustainability Ratings component, you can calculate a Morningstar Sustainability Rating for model portfolios, client accounts, or proposals.

How has changed in adding data from Microsoft® Excel® to an investment list?

With this release, when you copy data from Microsoft® Excel® and paste it into an investment list, only the “best-matched” search results are displayed. “Best-matched” results are based on your import preferences and global settings.

How can I create and edit a custom column set in a portfolio workbook?

You can now create and edit a custom column set in a portfolio workbook, just as you would in an investment workbook.

What’s new in Portfolio Editor?

In the Portfolio Editor window, you can now learn portfolio and holding characteristics by accessing the new data sets (via the Component Settings icon).

In Markets workbooks, the Export to PDF feature has been removed temporarily, as we work to improve and expand this capability to all components throughout Morningstar Direct Cloud.

What’s coming up in Morningstar methodology?

At the end of September 2018, a new methodology for the Morningstar Sustainability Rating goes into effect.

On August 23, 2018, a new methodology for the US Regional Asset Allocation goes into effect. The enhancements are as follows:
