BANDON — "The Death of Socrates and the Birth of Political Philosophy" is the topic of a free discussion at 3 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Bandon Public Library's Sprague Room.

This introductory class explores basic themes of political philosophy through the writings of Plato. Audience members will be introduced to a conflicted Socrates, Plato's teacher. Through a close reading of the short dialogue "Crito" participants will explore fundamental political questions about the nature of law, loyalty, civil disobedience and the conflict that arises when ideals of justice clash with the authority of the state.

What is the merit of gover-nance? Are there times you've thought the law is so bad maybe it should be broken, as has been the case with luminary figures, such as Thoreau, Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr. How might that look? What would be lost?

Socrates, the wisest ancient philosopher, asks us to consider these tough questions as those pres-ent embark on a civil discussion of politics stripped of the headlines from cable news. Participants should feel encouraged to bring to bat their own contemporary experi-ences.

This discussion is led by Dr. Jason Kropsky who holds a Ph.D. in political science and has resided in Oregon for the past four years. Prior to moving west, he taught courses in political theory, American government and interna-tional criminal justice.

BANDON — The Bandon Historical Society Museum will be celebrating “Mary Capps Appreciation Day,” at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, at the museum. The event is free.

A descendant of the pioneering Boice family, Mary Capps faithfully preserved the history of Bandon, Langlois and northern Curry County. Her husband Edgar was a descendant of the pioneering Lowe family and son of Ed Capps, the mayor of Bandon at the time of the 1936 Bandon Fire. Mary and Edgar were charter members of the Bandon Historical Society.

Before her retirement, Mary taught in the Bandon School District. She and Edgar main-tained a ranch on Two Mile Road.

Mary Capps was instrumental in organizing

the museum when it moved into its current build-ing in 1996. She wrote a “Museum Memories” column for many years and, with Edgar, was the go-to person when a group wanted a speaker about local history. She conducted countless museum tours.

“Mary has been a guiding light through the life of the museum,” said Director Gayle Nix. “We are honoring her with a reception, a mayor’s proc-lamation, cake and coffee. Join us at the museum on Friday of Thanksgiving weekend, as we give thanks for all that Mary Capps means to us.”

The Bandon Historical Society Museum is located at the corner of U.S. Highway 101 and Fillmore Ave.

BANDON — Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy a free meal on Thanksgiving.

Bandon Holiday Meals volunteers will be serving the 2019 Thanksgiving meal from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 28, at The Barn, located at 1200 11th St. SW in Bandon.

Holiday Meals started more than 30 years ago as a way for the community to enjoy the holiday with one another and get to know their neighbors, and that is still the spirit of the event. Volunteers and businesses donate food items and/or time to serve community members. The meal consists of turkey and ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuff-ing, yams, green beans, coleslaw, cranberry sauce,

rolls, assorted desserts and beverages (coffee, juice, water). Last year, more than 400 meals were served or delivered.

The meal is free, but donations will gladly be accepted at the door. Anyone in the Bandon area who is homebound and unable to attend the com-munity meal can pre-order a Thanksgiving dinner, and Holiday Meals will have it delivered.

Those who are homebound can call Colleen Wiesel at 916-221-0318 to order a Thanksgiving meal for delivery. Volunteers are still needed. To volunteer, call Ginny Hall at 541-404-4702. Organizers are asking for no dessert donations this year.

BANDON — Shop in Bandon this holiday season and enjoy special thanks from the local business community, sponsored by the Bandon Chamber of Commerce.

Shoppers are invited to redeem receipts from retail businesses in Bandon's 97411 zip code for a commemorative Irish coffee-style mug or a large yard holiday ornament at the Visitor Center.

Shop Bandon participants may collect one of the commemorative glasses or large yard orna-

ment with $60 total of receipts. Receipts must indicate products purchased between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Nov. 30. Utilities, groceries, pharmacy, contracted services and filling station purchases are exempt. (One mug or one ornament per per-son, per receipts total of $60. Maximum four of any/both. Limited availability, first-come, first-served.)

After the shopping frenzy, relax and mingle with friends at the Alive After 5’s Nog Walk/Wine Walk from 3-5 p.m. and at 5:30 p.m. head to the Bandon Chamber Visitor Center parking lot for the annual lighting of the Community Christmas Tree.

BANDON — The next Bandon Showcase offers something never before seen on a local stage, featuring an adventure tale told through heart-stopping aerial routines and amazing acrobatics.

“Aureum” From Halcyon Shows will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the Sprague Community Theater, 1202 11th St. SW in Bandon.

"This is sure to be an unforgettable experience for the whole family," said Bandon Showcase president MaryAnn Soukup.

The show will also feature an outreach for local youth. In addition, the Bandon Rotary Club is holding a food drive for Bandon Feeds the Hungry. Everyone attending who brings non-perishable items will receive a raffle ticket for prizes to be given away.
