Sunlight (Zoustar) could prove to be
the most desirable and expensive
mare to head to a southern
hemisphere public auction in more
than a decade with the three-time Group 1
winner considered a chance to crack the $3
million mark when the long-awaited Magic
Millions National Broodmare Sale starts today.
The headline act among a select group of
potential seven-figure race mares who will go
through the ring this afternoon, Sunlight (Lot

of the world’s biggest thoroughbred breeders
and, if the key protagonists elect to go head-to-

achieved by Listen Here (Elusive Quality) at the
same sale in 2016.
A new benchmark for Magic Millions could
be reached, but whether the competition from
domestic and international parties will be
strong enough, during the Covid-19 pandemic,
to see the former Tony and Calvin McEvoy-
trained sprinter reach the $5 million price
tag, the southern hemisphere record held
by Milanova (Danehill), would appear to be
remote.

While Sunlight’s appeal is obvious,
fellow high-profile race mares who are expected to hit the million-dollar
mark are Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Unforgotten (Fastnet
Rock) (Lot 92) and Invincibella (I Am Invincible) (Lot 12) who was
successful in the 2019 Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m).
“Any other year you’d expect Sunlight to break a record. She’s like no
other mare we’ve ever offered before,” Magic Millions managing director
Barry Bowditch said on the eve of the company’s first public auction since
the onset of the pandemic.
“Physically, she’s a star and she’s done it all on the racetrack and she’s
also got a great pedigree behind her.
“We’re expecting her to sell extremely well, but who knows (how
much she will make) as she’s going through unreserved, as is Unforgotten
and Invincibella.”
While the top end of the market is tipped to remain vibrant, the impact
of Covid-19 is expected to see the buying bench be cautious and not take
unnecessary risks in the current marketplace.
Willow Park Stud’s Glenn Burrows has a draft of 38 mares at this week’s
sale and is hopeful that the market sentiment from recent sales continues
on the Gold Coast but concedes that buyers will be selective.
“On the first day of parades the number of individual inspections that
we’d had was actually slightly ahead of last year’s day-to-day comparison,”
Burrows said.
“Unfortunately, that was a flash in the pan as we are now down 68 per
cent on our parades in comparison to this sale last year.
“We’re getting people coming here looking at one, two or three mares
and, keeping in mind I’ve got almost 40 nice mares in the sale, this is a
worry.

“Obviously buyers are being extremely
specific with their wish list and, as a consequence, I can see a proportion
- say the top 20 per cent of the sale - realising towards their worth but then
within the larger percentage, there will be incredible buying opportunities
with mares being sold at well discounted prices.
“With service fees owing on these mares, people like myself have to
meet the market and sell to survive.”
Bowditch is optimistic that the market at the National sale will remain
resilient despite the understandable decline in foot traffic on the ground.
“You look at the trend worldwide over the past three months. Most of
the sales in the north have held up quite well, the sales in Australia have
held up well and, more importantly, racing continued in this country, so
the wheel’s kept turning,” he said.
“Until Covid hit, we were on a record year for yearling sales, so the
breeders have got plenty of money in their pocket from the sales earlier
in the year and hopefully they seize this opportunity by keeping their lists
long and bid on plenty of mares over the next three days.”
The demand for high-class mares was evident at The Chairman’s Sale
in May which was topped by dual Group 1 winner In Her TIme (Time
Thief) who made $2 million while the virtual auction averaged $431,769
(56 lots sold).
Newgate Farm principal Henry Field expects that demand for elite
level breeding stock to be maintained on the Gold Coast.
“The quality bloodstock here and in the northern hemisphere has
held up particularly well on the private market and the public market,”
Field said.
“I expect the market here for the better horses will be robust and I
think there will be plenty of competition for the better offerings.”
One of those is the dual Australian Group 1-winning mare Viddora (I
Am Invincible) who was bought privately from connections in Europe last
year and covered by Lope De Vega (Shamardal) to southern hemisphere
time.

Field said: “We’ve been fortunate to
consign a number of mares who have sold for north of a million dollars
in the last five or six years and every mare we’ve brought to market at that
level has been sold with plenty of competition on them.
“We’re a selling farm, so we’re here to sell her, but in saying that if by
chance the market was very soft then she’s a mare you’d have no issue
taking home.
“She really reminds me of a mare like Response that Arrowfield and
the Yoshida family bought off us a few years ago. She was a top race mare,
a multiple Group 1 winner who was beautiful and has gone on to produce
(Golden Slipper Stakes winner) Estijaab.
“Viddora’s got a Lope De Vega in her belly and I’m sure she’ll produce
a magnificent foal.”
Traditionally the largest breeding stock sale in the southern
hemisphere, the Magic Millions National Sale was pushed back from its
normal May-June slot in the hope of being able to conduct a live auction.
That was threatened with the second coronavirus wave in Victoria,
which led to some participants from that state hitting the road at the start
of the month.
An outbreak in western Sydney also forced Bowditch to further delay
the National sale by a week to ensure stakeholders who were at the Inglis
July sales series could attend.
Baystone Farm’s Dean Harvey, who along with agent Sheamus Mills
and Rochelle Adams, is one Victorian who made the dash across the
border to ensure he made it to the Gold Coast to oversee his draft of 20
mares.
“We’ve been out of Victoria for nearly a month now. We went up
through Scone in NSW for a few weeks and managed to look at a lot of
mares up there, which was good, but it’s also been a long trip and I’m
looking forward to getting the sale under way,” said Harvey who described
the coming few days as “the great unknown”.
Shalwa (O’Reilly), who scored a valuable maiden stakes win in the
Helen Coughlan Stakes (Listed, 1350m) at Doomben in May, will be
Baystone’s sole mare to go through the ring today, before offering a string
of mares on the following two days.
“Our first lot through is a really nice stakes-winning O’Reilly mare
called Shalwa. She’s been a very good racemare and she’s been popular
with her pedigree, so she should sell really well,” he said.
“We’ve got some other mares with big pedigrees in foal to the right
stallions. There’s a nice mare by High Chaparral (Highway) in foal to
Trapeze Artist and we’ve got a few in foal to Written Tycoon as well
(Nelum, Queen Of The Air and Romantic Era).”
The 147-lot opening session starts at 2pm before two full days of
selling tomorrow and Wednesday from 10am.
The National Weanling Sale will be conducted on Thursday and
Friday, continuing a hectic week for vendors, agents and buyers alike.

Nine for Super OneNewgate Farm sire Super One (I Am Invincible)
added a ninth first crop winner to his tally
when One Lotto (2 g ex Potluck by Excites)
made a successful debut to take out a maiden
1150 metres at Devonport yesterday. The John
Keys-trained gelding scored an easy length and
a half win over Weldborough (Mawingo), with
Freelancer (Wordsmith) another length away
in third. One Lotto was bought by his trainer
for $45,000 at the Magic Millions Tasmanian
Yearling Sale from the Armidale Stud draft
after first being sold for $20,000 at the Inglis
Australian Weanling Sale from the Middlebrook
Valley Lodge draft. One Lotto is the first winner
for Potluck (Excites), a Sydney metropolitan
winning grand-daughter of stakes-winner
Snapshots (Success Express) from the family of
three-time Group 1 winner Sea Siren (Fastnet
Rock). Potluck has a weanling filly by Winning
Rupert (Written Tycoon) and is in foal to Flying
Artie (Artie Schiller). Super One will stand for a
fee of $11,000 inc GST in 2020.
Big names to step out at Randwick trialsA host of feature race contenders are scheduled to
continue preparations towards their new-season
returns at a star-studded set of barrier trials at
Randwick tomorrow. In the opening heat of the
morning over 850 metres Group 1 winners Con Te
Partiro (Scat Daddy), Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock)
and Kolding (Ocean Park) are among the entries,
along with well-performed gallopers Splintex
(Snitzel), Star Of The Seas (Ocean Park), Prague
(Redoute’s Choice), Hightail (Written Tycoon)
and Home Of The Brave (Starspangledbanner).
Group 1 winners Kings Will Dream (Casamento)
and Probabeel (Savabeel) are among the
headline entries for the second heat, also over 850
metres on the Kensington track, while the eight
horses entered for the third heat of the morning
include dual Group 1 winner Fierce Impact (Deep
Impact) and star New Zealand mare Melody Belle
(Commands). Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m)
placegetter Brandenburg (Burgundy) and
Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) placegetter
Mamaragan (Wandjina) are also among the
entries for the third heat.
Handicap return for Cup hope NonconformistGrahame Begg is eyeing a 1400-metre handicap
at Caulfield on August 29 as the starting point
for his Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) hopeful
Nonconformist (Rebel Raider). The rising four-
year-old was last seen when landing the Alister
Clark Stakes (Gr 2, 2040m) at Moonee Valley
back in March, making it three wins from his first
six starts. “He’ll have a jumpout at Sandown on
August 5 and he’ll have another jumpout on the
18th and then he’ll proceed to the Memsie Stakes
meeting at Caulfield,” Begg told Racing.com. “I
doubt I’ll run him in the Memsie Stakes first up.
There’s a 1400-metre open handicap on the same
day and I’d say that will be the race that I’ll run
him in. I think you’ve got to be at your top to win
Group 1s first up and possibly a lot of horses in the
Memsie will have had a run under their belt in the
P.B. Lawrence. I’d rather go to the softer option
because I think it’s a fair transition from three-
year-old grade going into your four-year-old year.”
Cumani eyes early spring with CreedenceMatt Cumani is hopeful he can turn Creedence
(Helmet) into a spring performer after the stable
newcomer showed his credentials with a strong
winter campaign. Creedence has had three
starts for Cumani, winning twice at Flemington,
and now the trainer is hoping the gelding
can be competitive against tougher spring
opposition. Creedence turns six on Saturday
and connections of the gelding see this year
as potentially the final chance at having a shot
at the spring. "He's not a spring chicken and
the owners are pretty keen to have a go at the
spring," Cumani said. "And he seems to have
done enough to suggest he might be up to that
level. We could look at a race like the Heatherlie
or if we don't want to drop him too much in
distance there's an open handicap at The Valley
in the penultimate weekend in August and then
we'll see where he takes us, but I'd love to have
him in a race like The Naturalism.”
Low key return for Mr QuickieTrainer Phillip Stokes is likely to kick off Mr
Quickie's (Shamus Award) campaign below the
top level but he will still nominate the Group 1
winner for some of the big spring features. Mr
Quickie had a jump-out at Pakenham last week
and Stokes is planning to likely start the gelding
in a 1400-metre handicap after he has two more
jump-outs in the coming weeks. "We're just going
to start him off in a lower rating race just to try to
get him back winning again," Stokes said. "He'll
obviously be nominated for Caulfield Cups and all
that, but he will only go there if his form warrants
it. Last time in he started off first-up in the All-Star
Mile and wasn't beaten that far, but we're going to
just lower the expectations and maybe just start
him off in an open handicap this time around
and work it out after that. He had a very soft jump-
out at Pakenham on Wednesday and he'll have
two more of those and we'll have him nice and
forward for a 1400-metre race at Caulfield."

Fasika nearing comebackJoe Pride is planning to give his star sprinter
Fasika (So You Think) a trial at Warwick Farm
next month in preparation for a racetrack
return in September. Pride is eyeing the
Sheraco Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Rosehill on
September 12 as the likely first target for the
Group 1 placegetter. "She has 100 per cent
developed and in quite dramatic fashion,"
Pride said. "I am super excited and if she is
ever going to win Group Ones, it is going to
be now." The rising five-year-old, who has
four wins and four placings from her ten
starts to date, finished second in the Sheraco
last season behind subsequent Golden Eagle
(1500m) third Mizzy (Zoustar).
Millions aim for Anderson pairTop Brisbane gallopers Ballistic Boy (Smart
Missile) and Profit (Dundeel) will bypass the
southern spring carnivals to concentrate on
the Gold Coast's Magic Millions in January.
Both had been in the early betting markets
for some of the Group 1 races in Sydney and
Melbourne but trainer Chris Anderson opted
to stay put after monitoring the pair as they
spell at Washpool Lodge. "I suppose the
spring was an option but when it boils down
to it the Magic Millions is big money and we
can give both horses a really good break," he
said. "They both had big winters because we
had to keep changing the programs for both
with the races being swapped about. Ballistic
Boy will tackle the Magic Millions Cup while
Profit will be aimed at The Wave. Those are
races which really suit.”
Eaton savours Lightning winApprentice Jessica Eaton was delighted to record
her first black-type success at Morphettville
on Saturday where she impressed onboard
emerging filly Parlophone (I Am Invincible) in
the Lightning Stakes (Listed, 1050m) for former
boss Mick Price and training partner Michael
Kent Jr. “It was quite a thrill, very happy, she’s
pretty special,” Eaton told RSN 927 yesterday.
“To be able to ride her was massive and she’s
obviously a classy animal that’s got a lot of
improvement yet to come.” Eaton is on a three-
month loan to trainer Michael Hickmott as she
embarks on the final year of her apprenticeship
and the 26-year-old will have to decide if she
will extend her loan beyond that or return to
Victoria. “I’m pretty happy with how things
are going, obviously with Covid and racing in
Victoria things are pretty tough, so I see myself
staying in South Australia for a while and
ironing out the rest of my apprenticeship here,
and doing the most I can to get as much success
and experience.”
Adkins undergoes surgeryFollowing a heavy fall in the opening race at
Rosehill on Saturday, jockey Andrew Adkins
has undergone surgery at Westmead Hospital
where the procedures have been described as
successful. Adkins fell from the ill-fated Danny
Williams-trained two-year-old Hot ‘N’ Hazy
(Snitzel) and Racing NSW’s Dr Duckworth
yesterday reported that the rider had a rod
placed in his tibia and a plate in his clavicle.
Adkins also had a drain out of his chest after his
lung collapsed due to fractured ribs sustained
in the fall. He will now be placed in a high
dependency ward for close monitoring. Hugh
Bowman, who rode the winner Smart Image
(Smart Missile), was questioned by stewards
after the race with the inquiry adjourned to
allow Adkins to give evidence.
Bakos banned for painkiller useQueensland apprentice Anna Bakos is the latest
jockey to be suspended after taking a prescribed
painkiller. A random test taken after Bakos rode
trackwork at Deagon on June 15 revealed traces
of morphine and codeine. Bakos told stewards
she had taken Panadeine Forte after undergoing
dental surgery. At least five Queensland jockeys
or trackwork riders have recently tested positive
after taking medication for pain relief. Bakos,
who has been in good form on provincial tracks
since relocating from NSW earlier this year,
was banned for two weeks, a timeframe which
expires tomorrow.

Tokyo City Cup date changeThoroughbred Racing South Australia (TRSA)
announced last week that they have changed
the dates of three Listed races in order to
enhance the SA feature race programme.
The Tokyo City Cup (Listed, 1800m), a set
weights and penalties race, has been moved
from its traditional mid-to-late September
date to Saturday, October 31. “It’s currently
programmed just three days after the Balaklava
Cup, which is a 1600-metre race,” said TRSA
handicapper Rhett Cook. “The shift to this date
makes the Tokyo City Cup two weeks after the
Murray Bridge Cup, which is also a mile race,
and allows a proper gap and progression for
South Australian horses.” Meanwhile, the three-
year-old Morphettville Guineas (Listed, 1600m)
has been shifted from September to Monday,
March 8. The move delivers a feature three-year-
old race on Adelaide Cup Day. Additionally,
the weight-for-age Durbridge Stakes (Listed,
1100m) has undergone two major changes; it
has been moved from October to January 30
and its distance has been reduced from 1200
metres to 1100 metres. “This move will allow
horses looking at targeting Melbourne autumn
features an ideal start point in South Australia,”
Cook added.
NSW meetings lostThe two meetings scheduled in NSW yesterday
were postponed without a race being run
because of wet weather sweeping the coastal
regions. The Coffs Harbour meeting was called
off before scratching time due to surface water
being on the track, while the Sapphire Coast
meeting was called off before midday after rain
hit the area and left the track being unsafe for
racing. Today’s Cessnock meeting is also in
doubt, with stewards to conduct an inspection
at 6am (AEST) to determine whether the
track is safe for racing. It was rated a Heavy 10
yesterday.
NEW ZEALAND
Travelling Light heading to Ruakaka
Trainer Ben Foote is delighted with Levin
Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Travelling Light
(El Roca) as she works towards returning to the
track in early September. The three-year-old
will head to Ruakaka next week and the plan is
to run at the trials meeting on August 4 to get
her fit for her spring campaign, which could
start with the US Navy Flag Foxbridge Plate
(Gr 2, 1200m) at Te Rapa on September 5. “I’m
taking her to Ruakaka on Wednesday and she
will stay up there for the week,” Foote said. “She
can trial up there on the 4th which is part of her
preparation. She is 27 kilograms heavier than
when she last raced so she has matured nicely
over the break we gave her. She is pretty forward
and very well at present as the Cambridge
Jockey Club has let the Group 1 horses do their
slow work on the grass this year which has really
helped. We’ve got four races earmarked for her
in the spring, kicking off with the Foxbridge at
Te Rapa, then the Group 1s on the first two days
at Hastings, and hopefully the Golden Eagle in
Sydney if we can get there.”
Emotional win for Letz’av Bubbles’ connectionsWhen three-year-old Letz’av Bubbles
(Showcasing) broke her maiden at the third start
at Avondale on Saturday it was an emotional
victory for her owners, the Shirl's Girls
syndicate. The group was put together by Karyn
Vincent, administration manager at Rich Hill
Stud, and is in honour of her mother, Shirley,
who passed away just over two years ago. The
syndicate comprises of friends and family of
Shirley, who bred the filly with her husband
Murray, son Craig and friends Karen and Kevin
Fursdon. “I think there are about twenty people
all up in the horse, once you add in the partners
of the official shareholders,” Vincent said. “It’s a
group of family and Mum’s close friends who are
in the horse including several first-time owners.
Seven or eight made the trip to Avondale and
made their presence felt as there was plenty
of noise when she looked like she was going
to win. We didn’t all get to celebrate together
as people had their own commitments, but by
the look of the pictures I’ve seen this morning,
there were plenty of glasses of bubbles raised to
toast the victory.”

Ataahua Dreamtime helps Ridley to doublePromising three-year-old Ataahua Dreamtime
(Tavistock) kicked off a double for local trainer
Neill Ridley at Riccarton Park on Saturday when
breaking her maiden over 1100 metres at her
second start. “She has got a fair bit of ability,”
Ridley said. “She was ready to go before the
Covid-19 lockdown occurred and I thought
we might have picked up a fillies’ race on the
way through but she has got her win now. She’s
done enough for the time being and will go out
in the paddock for a couple of months as she
still has some filling out to do. The heavy tracks
don’t really suit her so it is a good time to have a
break. I know the phones have been ringing but
her owner is not keen to sell which suits me.”
Ridley then doubled up when Athene (Raise
The Flag) took out the last race of the day. “She
had gone a good race first up over 1000 metres
in far stronger company so I thought she was a
good chance,” he added. “She keeps improving
so with some more time on her side I think she
can win a couple more.”
Hannam suffers broken legPopular central districts jockey Robert Hannam
faces another extended stint on the sidelines
after breaking his femur during track work last
week. This comes less than three years after he
was out of action for eight months due to an
ankle injury. “I was just on my way back off the
track after riding trackwork, it was quite early
on Thursday morning, and it was quite a windy
morning,” Hannam said. “The horse just got
a bit of a fright and ended up kicking me and
breaking my femur. It’s been a bit of a bad run
over the last few years. I had my ankle break
when I was riding in India a couple of years
ago, and I’d actually only just had my screws
and rods taken out from that over the last few
weeks. Just when I thought I was getting back
to normal, this happens." The 54-year-old, who
has 25 wins for the season, hopes to be back in
the saddle towards the end of this year. “The
doctors said I’m looking at a minimum of six
to eight weeks’ recovery time,” he continued.
“Things are still a little bit up in the air at the
moment and we’ll have to wait and see, but I’m
picking that I’ll be absolutely itching to get back
into it by the end of that time.”
INTERNATIONAL
More Group 1 glory for Barney RoyBarney Roy (Excelebration) registered his
third Group 1 victory and his second since
returning from an unsuccessful stint at stud
when scoring as favourite in the Grosser
Dallmayr-Preis - Bayerisches Zuchtrennen (Gr
1, 2000m) in Munich yesterday. The Charlie
Appleby-trained six-year-old did just enough to
hold off the challenge of Quest The Moon (Sea
The Moon) by a neck, with Patrick Sarsfield
(Australia) a further length and a quarter away
in third. Formerly trained by Richard Hannon,
Barney Roy now has seven wins from 14 starts,
including six successes in stakes company.
First for Coulsty
Rathasker Stud’s first season sire Coulsty
(Kodiac) recorded his first stakes winner
yesterday when Santosha (2 f ex Princess
Zoffany by Zoffany) kept on well to bag the
Princess Margaret Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Ascot.
The David Loughnane-trained juvenile won on
debut last month at Lingfield before running
third last time in the Duchess Of Cambridge
Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Newmarket on soft ground.
Returning to a better surface, she got the better
of Hala Hala Hala (Exceed And Excel) by
three-quarters of a length, while Caroline Dale
(Lethal Force) was the same distance back in
third. The favourite More Beautiful (War Front)
returned sixth of the seven runners. Santosha is
one of four winners from eight runners for the
Group-winning sprinter Coulsty, who stands at
Rathasker Stud in Ireland where his fee for 2020
was €4,000.
Three for GregorianPlainchant (2 f ex Nadinska by Doyen) became
third stakes winner for fellow Rathasker Stud
resident Gregorian (Clodovil) when taking
out the Criterium du Bequet (Listed, 1200m)
at Le Teste de Buch yesterday. A winner over
course and distance on her second start last
month, Plainchant got the better of the favourite
Stardevote (Starspangledbanner) by a length
and a quarter yesterday while the pair were three
lengths clear of Tea Dance (Adaay). Gregorian
started his career at the National Stud in England
however relocated back to his breeders’ Rathasker
Stud in 2019 and his fee for this year was €6,000.
20 for NathanielA surprise victory for Lady Bowthorpe (4 f ex
Maglietta Fina by Verglas) in yesterday’s Valiant
Fillies’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) capped a memorable
weekend for Nathaniel (Galileo) at Ascot. A day
after Enable’s historic third win in the King George
and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 4f), the
four-year-old registered a milestone success, with
the four and three-quarter length win providing
the Newsells Park Stud resident with his 20th
individual stakes winner. The William Jarvis-
trained mare belied her starting price of 12-1 as she
came home readily clear of 25-1 chance Farzeen
(Farhh). Look Around (Kingman) was another
head away in third at 11-1. A half-sister to recent
Group 2 winner Speak In Colours (Excelebration),
Lady Bowthorpe is the second foal out of the
winning Verglas (Highest Honor) mare Maglietta
Fina, who herself is a half-sister to the dual Group
2 winner Tullius (Le Vie Dei Colori). Nathaniel
stood for a fee of £25,000 in 2020.
Franconia triumphs againThe regally-bred Franconia (Frankel) completed
back-to-back wins since stepping up to stakes
company with a comfortable success in the Lyric
Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 1m2¼f) at York yesterday.
Representing the King George-winning
combination of Juddmonte Farms, John Gosden
and Frankie Dettori, the three-year-old filly had
no problems obliging as 1-3 favourite, beating
Gold Wand (Golden Horn) by three-quarters of a
length, with Bighearted (Farhh) another four and
a quarter lengths away in third. Franconia (3 f ex
Winter Sunrise by Pivotal) is a half-sister to Group
1 winner Winsili (Dansili).

Three for ViolenceMedaglia d'Oro's (El Prado) son Violence sired
his third individual elite level winner when
Volatile (4 c ex Melody Lady by Unbridled’s
Song) made all the running to take out the Alfred
G Vanderbilt Handicap (Gr 1, 6f) at Saratoga on
Saturday night. Now the winner of five races
from six starts and with a 100 per cent record
this year, the Steve Asmussen-trained four-
year-old beat Whitmore (Pleasantly Perfect)
by a length and a quarter, with Mind Control
(Stay Perfect) another half a length away in
third. Volatile, a US$850,000 purchase by Kerri
Radcliffe Bloodstock and Three Chimneys Farm
from the Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency consignment
at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale,
is the second stakes winner from the stakes-
winning Unbridled's Song (Unbridled) mare
Melody Lady. Her first, Buy Sell Hold, a full
sister to Volatile, won the Kentucky Juvenile
Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Churchill Downs for
Asmussen in May 2017. Violence stands at Hill
'n' Dale Farms for US$25,000.
112 for Speightstown
Speightstown (Gone West) sired his 112th
individual stakes winner when Shirl’s Speight
(3 c ex Perfect Shirl by Perfect Soul) took his
unbeaten record to two with victory in the
Marine Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Woodbine on
Saturday. The Roger Attfield-trained three-
year-old beat Lucky Curlin (Curlin) by two
and three-quarter lengths with Dotted Line
(Signature Red) another length and a half away
in third. Bred in Kentucky, Shirl's Speight is
out of Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (Gr 1,
11f) heroine Perfect Shirl. His four-year-old
brother, Perfect Speighty, is a winner, and
he has a two-year-old unraced sister named
Speightstown Shirl. Multiple Grade 1-winning
sire Speightstown stands at WinStar Farm for
US$70,000.
Maximum Security makes winning debut for BaffertMaximum Security (New Year’s Day) made his
first start for Bob Baffert a winning one when
running out a gritty winner of the San Diego
Handicap (Gr 2, 8.5f) at Del Mar on Saturday.
Having switched from trainer Jason Servis, who
is facing charges for doping, the four-year-old
collared the front-running Midcourt (Midnight
Lute) at the line to win by a nose, with a gap of
six and a quarter lengths back to Higher Power
(Medaglia d'Oro) in third. Maximum Security
was landing his ninth success from 11 starts,
although his victory in the Saudi Cup (1m 1f)
in February is under investigation following
Servis' indictment.
Starship keeps winning run goingCanada’s Horse of the Year Starship Jubilee
(Indy Wood) made it four wins from as many
starts in 2020 when just getting the better of
Call Me Love (Sea The Stars) in the Ballston
Spa Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f) at Saratoga on Saturday
night. The Keven Atard-trained seven-year-old
scored by a neck, with favourite Sistercharlie
(Myboycharlie) another length and a quarter
away in third. Starship Jubilee has now won
18 of her 36 starts, with 11 of those successes
coming in stakes company.
Stradivarius faces six in Goodwood CupEurope’s star stayer Stradivarius (Sea The Stars)
will face six rivals when he attempts to become
the first ever four-time winner of tomorrow’s
Goodwood Cup (Gr 1, 2m). A ten-length winner
of the Ascot Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m 4f) last time out,
Stradivarius looks to face his toughest test for
some time with the John Gosden-trained six-
year-old having to concede 15lb to Irish Derby
(Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner Santiago (Authorized).
Justify faces possible Santa Anita Derby disqualificationUS Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat Daddy)
faces potential disqualification from the 2018
Santa Anita Derby (Gr 1, 9f) after a settlement
agreement was broadly reached between the
California Horse Racing Board and Mick Ruis,
who saddled Bolt D'Oro (Medaglia d’Oro) to
finish second. Ruis filed a lawsuit against the
CHRB earlier this year after Justify was revealed
to have tested positive for the banned substance
scopolamine. The test result was uncovered by
the New York Times last year, with officials at the
CHRB taking no action against Justify despite
California having a rule at the time which stated
horses testing positive for such a substance
must be disqualified. The CHRB contended that
it conducted an investigation into the positive
test and determined that the horse accidentally
ingested scopolamine, which can be found in
the plant jimson weed, as part of its feed and
dismissed the case. However, on Friday, Ruis's
attorney Darrell Vienna said in a press release
that the CHRB approved the outlines of the
settlement agreement at a recent closed session
and a disqualification hearing would take place.

BY RICHARD FORRISTAL - RACING POST
A Group 1 that should have been
run two months earlier, a mare
who was supposed to be in the
breeding shed, an absent trainer
and a jockey making the most of another Covid-
19-inspired opportunity.
The 2020 Tattersalls Gold Cup (Gr 1, 1m 2f)
was unconventional in many respects, although
not in its outcome. Magical (Galileo) was sent
off a red-hot 2-9 favourite to secure back-to-
back wins in the mile-and-a-quarter Curragh
contest, and she did not disappoint.
She might not have been as flamboyant as
she had been on her Pretty Polly Stakes (Gr 1,
1m 2f) reappearance, or when running out a
seven-length winner of this race in 2019, but
she was utterly professional.
With the coronavirus quarantine
restrictions keeping Ryan Moore at Ascot and
Seamie Heffernan suspended, who did the
steering over course and distance 28 days
earlier, it fell to Wayne Lordan to ensure the
brilliant five-year-old’s latest assignment went
to plan.
Lordan, riding Magical for just the second
time, was not going to be a hostage to fortune.
He promptly went about setting the fractions to
suit himself, with Buckhurst (Australia) and Leo
De Fury (Australia) tracking him.
As they swung into the straight with less
than half a mile to run, Lordan gradually began
to wind up his mount. While Magical did not
conjure anything particularly spectacular,
the chasing duo could not live with her when
Lordan gave her a couple of flicks a furlong out.
Aidan O’Brien's daughter of Galileo
(Sadler’s Wells) scored by two and a quarter
lengths as Sir Dragonet (Camelot) and Search
For A Song (Galileo), who sat together in
the rear early on, came through to pick up
the pieces in second and third, with Armory
(Galileo) keeping on for fourth.
In a season being lit up by Magical, her
nemesis Enable (Nathaniel) and stable-mate
Love (Galileo), the Curragh’s decision to have
Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Want to Have Fun as
the soundtrack for her walk back in was apt. As
another of racing's marquee events took place
without a paying customer in sight, that at least
made for a fleeting, if contrived, relief from the
sterility of sporting life as we now know it.
"She is a great mare," said O'Brien on the
phone subsequently, missing out here due to
a two-week suspension following his Covid-19
breach on the night of the Irish 2,000 Guineas
(Gr 1, 1m).
"The only reason she is here now is because
of the progress she made over the winter and
she had progressed again from the Pretty
Polly, so we are delighted the lads kept her in
training."
This was O'Brien’s ninth win in the race
and Magical’s sixth at the highest level. With
Love being aimed at a Knavesmire showdown
with Enable in the Yorkshire Oaks (Gr 1, 1m
4f) the Juddmonte International Stakes (Gr 1,
1m 2f) could be next for yesterday’s dominant
heroine, although she could wait for the Irish
Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f), which she also
won in 2019.
"She might get a little bit of an easy time of
it now, but the options would be the Juddmonte
International and the Irish Champion Stakes. She
could wait for the Irish Champion, but we’ll see."
O'Brien suggested the same ten-furlong
Group 1s will be considered for Sir Dragonet,
who turned the tables on his Alleged Stakes
(Gr 3, 1m 2f) conqueror Buckhurst in finishing
second for a fourth time in succession.
Lordan previously rode Magical in the
2018 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1 1m 4f), in
which she could yet cross swords with Enable
once more. Paddy Power were among the
bookmakers to leave her unchanged at 14-1
for the autumn Longchamp feature, although
Unibet opted to trim her to 12-1 from 16.
"It’s a treat to get a ride on a filly like her,"
Lordan beamed.
Of the less emphatic style of victory
compared to her Pretty Polly rout, he added:
"She zinged along in front last time. Today she
was a little bit more relaxed, and I’d say that was
the only difference. I felt if anyone was going
to get to me, it was going to help me. From
the minute you sit on her until you get off her,
she feels like she has a presence. She is a high-
quality filly."

It's super six for Magical as she breezes to victory in the Tattersalls Gold Cup
Magical RACING POST (PATRICK MCCANN

BY MICHAEL LEE | SPG TURF CLUB
Churchill (Smart Missile) gave his
Singapore Derby (Listed, 1800m)
aspirations no harm with a
display of outstanding resilience
in yesterday’s $70,000 Class 3 Division 1 race
over 1200 metres.
That second Kranji win was highly
reminiscent of his maiden win in a Class 4
event over 1400 metres second-up on February
28. That night, from a wide alley as well, he had
to press on for most of the back straight under
jockey Vlad Duric before finding the lead and
going on to score.
If that win was all guts and glory, multiply
that factor by at least five for yesterday’s win.
With replacement jockey Ryan Munger up, the
strapping galloper was caught five to six deep
for almost two thirds of the speed dash.
With well-fancied rivals like Surge (Exceed
And Excel), Hugo (Smart Missile) and Filibuster
(Ilovethiscity) on his inside, most thought
Churchill would show the white flag upon
straightening, but that was underestimating
Ricardo Le Grange’s bulldog.
It soon became evident that Churchill had
actually only been humming along despite his
scenic route on the outskirts. Once Munger
popped the question, the game galloper went
through his gears, actually skipping clear by
two lengths when he was entitled to get the
staggers.
Those who had run along on his inside
were the ones who were running on fumes
instead, while the swoopers could not pull
much ground off him either. In the end it
was the fast-finishing Beau Geste (Street Cry)
who won the fight for the minors one and a
half-length away, a head clear of Chocante
(Fastnet Rock).
The run of the race has to be Absolvido
(Rip Van Winkle) who after tailing off badly,
stormed home to just miss fourth place by a
nose to Ironside (Jimmy Choux). The winning
time was 1min 11.97secs for the 1200 metres on
the Polytrack.
With that second success, Churchill, a
former Sydney one-time winner when known
as Front Sight and prepared by Newcastle
trainer Kris Lees, has bulged his win account
past the $75,000 mark for The Racing Club
headed by iRace boss Steve Levar.
After such an odds-defying run,
connections would have every reason to
harbour loftier dreams for the Smart Missile
four-year-old, namely the Singapore Derby on
September 6. It was a feature race he had been
aimed at anyway before Covid-19, and now that
it is open to five-year-olds and will be staged on
September 6, he is still eligible.
“It was a big, big win. He’s a big horse who
was drawn out and Ryan used his stride to go
forward,” said Le Grange who was capping a
great day with a treble after Sweet Angeline
(Rubick) and Gold Prize (Orpen) scored
earlier.
“Unfortunately, the horses kicked up on
his inside and Ryan didn’t want to break his
momentum. That horse has both class and
courage.
“I’ll have a chat with Steve but the Derby
would definitely be a race to look at for him.”
Le Grange dedicated that hat-trick of wins
to his father Jack who is currently recovering
from surgery.
“I’d like to spare a special thought to my
Dad, who had surgery in the US yesterday. This
one is for you Dad, and here’s to wishing you a
speedy recovery.”
Sweet Angeline picks up where she left off
Promising filly Sweet Angeline’s (Rubick)
fighting spirit again came to the fore as she
posted a second win.
At her Kranji debut on April 3, in what was to
become the last race of the pre-Circuit Breaker
three-month suspension, the three-year-old beat
all comers by doing it the hard way, pressing on
from a wide course before digging down deep in
the home straight for a tenacious win.
She again had no luck at the barriers when
resuming in yesterday’s $50,000 Class 4 Division
2 race over 1200 metres, having drawn 10 from
11, not to mention she had to contend with the
steadier of 58 kilograms this time.

Derby beckons after big-hearted victory from Churchill
Churchill SINGAPORE TURF CLUB

But, with champion jockey Vlad Duric
staying on her back, she used her natural speed
to again take up a forward position, albeit
unable to cross with main rival Knight Love
(Shanghai Bobby) kicking up on the rails from
a better gate.
Legend Rocks (Mahisara) in the end rolled
forward to show the way for the two main
protagonists, but Duric was again on the front
foot when he was the first to heel his mount
along at the top of the straight.
Sweet Angeline immediately shot to the
front. The favourite Knight Love was caught
a little on the backfoot on the inside running
rails but clawing his way back, while Delaware
(Shooting To Win) was making inroads on the
outside with a stinging challenge, shaping up as
the one who could upstage the two top picks.
But absorbing the pressure from either
side with aplomb, Sweet Angeline ($13) fought
back tooth and nail to go and hold a one-length
margin on Knight Love. Michael Clements’
US-bred debut winner lost no admirers with
his gallant effort, just nosing Delaware out for
second place. The winning time was just a tick
under 1min 12secs.
Sweet Angeline, who raced as Chia for a
record of one win in six starts in New South
Wales, has now established a two-from-two
record in Singapore for around $55,000 in
stakes earnings for the TRC Stable.
“It was a tough courageous win from Sweet
Angeline. It’s great training horses like her,” said
Le Grange.
“It’s so good to see her win the way she did.
The biggest thing about her is she wants to win.
“She’s now won two tough races. They
never left her alone, she gave them so much
weight, but she kicked again.”
Le Grange went on to saddle a second
winner when Gold Prize made all in the $20,000
maiden race over 1200 metres.
The Argentinian-bred four-year-old was
opening his account at his fifth start after
overcoming some adversity early in his career
at Kranji.
“It’s great this horse won. A massive thanks
to the Gold & Chelsea Stable, the Yong’s,” said
Le Grange.
“He had a tendon injury after the first start
and the owners have been very patient.
“Today the plan was to ride him positive
and Ryan ended up in front and it worked out
well in the end.”
Flying start for Heartening Flyer
Heartening Flyer (Excelebration) lived
up to his name when he got off to a flier with
trainer Michael Clements predicting bigger and
better things for the colt post-race.
After two barrier trial wins put the writing
on the wall, the three-year-old certainly franked
that impression from the way he was coasting in
a handy spot in the $75,000 restricted maiden
Division 1 race over 1200 metres.
Once he swept past the weakening leader
Lady Fast (Ferlax), he looked a moral, but
Brutus (Rubick) would not give him peace
inside the concluding stages.
The $8 hotpot looked on the ropes as his
lead was whittled down, but under Louis-
Philippe Beuzelin’s deft handling, he raised
another gear to hold Brutus at bay by a neck.
The Shadow (Dissident) took third place
another four and a half lengths away.
Heartening Flyer ran the 1200 metres on
Polytrack in 1min 11.84secs and was bringing
up around $40,000 in prize-money for the Tivic
Stable, better known for their top sprinter Bold
Thruster (Turffontein) who also races with
Clements.
Pleased with what he saw, Clements has
already locked away Heartening Flyer’s next
outing.
“It was nice game win, 1200 metres first-
up is never easy for a young horse,” said the
Zimbabwean-born conditioner.
“I was really pleased with how he travelled,
and up the straight, he kicked nicely. He was
probably lacking in experience when he looked
a bit lost once he hit the front, but when the
other horse came up, he quickened up again. I
have found a novice race over 1200 metres on
turf for him on August 16.
“He’s a long-striding horse and in my
opinion, such horses are more comfortable on
grass.”
Interestingly, that win saw Beuzelin
leapfrog over Ruan Maia to take second place
in the Singapore jockeys’ premiership. The pair
were tied on 17 winners before the race.
Maia had a chance to hold his spot when
Brutus came with a rush at the 150 metres,
but despite his efforts, the Brazilian could not
overhaul his French counterpart.
