Operation

ISO/DIN Valves Shaft Adaptation

The Morin MRP Rack and Pinionactuator offers unsurpassed flexibility inmounting options. The design provides acommon sense approach to the multipleshaft designs allowed by ISO. The MRPaddresses the complexity of thisstandard with a standard of it’s own andoffers a comprehensive range ofadapters to suit many of the ISO“standard” shafts on the market today. This allows the MRP to be used ondiffering valve shaft designs in the sameplant without having the same sizeactuator models with different pinions.

Actuator Mounting pad of the MorinMRP: The dual-keyed input shaft allowsparallel or perpendicular mounting to thevalve flow and is designed to accept thedesired ISO adapter sleeve. Acomprehensive range of adaptersleeves is available to suit many valvestems.

Double and Single Acting Actuators

Both the double acting and spring return MRP actuators feature a compact design withthe same envelope dimensions. This flexible unit can be converted from double actingto single acting in the field without special charts to decipher color codes on whichsprings to use. The spring return actuator is available with spring sets from 40 poundsto 80 pounds in 10 pound increments. The springs are manufactured from heavygauge wire to assure long life and corrosion resistance.

Standard Double Acting

To OPEN Valve: In a double actingapplication, air pressure is introduced toPort B, pressurizing the space betweenthe pistons and driving the pistons outtowards the actuator ends. The volumeof air above the piston heads isexhausted to atmosphere. This causesthe piston racks to drive the pinion in acounterclockwise direction, resulting in aquarter-turn rotation. This rotation istransferred to the valve shaft, openingthe valve.

To CLOSE Valve: Air pressureintroduced to Port A, pressurizing thespaces above each piston head anddriving the pistons inward. The volumeof air between the pistons is exhaustedto atmosphere. This causes the pistonracks to drive the pinion in a clockwisedirection, resulting in a quarter-turnrotation. This rotation is transferred tothe valve shaft, closing the valve.

Spring Return

To OPEN Valve: In a single actingapplication, air pressure is introduced toPort B, pressurizing the space betweenthe pistons and driving the pistons outtowards the actuator ends while at thesame time compressing the springs. This causes the piston racks to drive thepinion in a counterclockwise direction, resulting in a quarter-turn rotation. Thisrotation is transferred to the valve shaft, opening the valve.

To CLOSE Valve: When the air pressureis relieved, the spring tension moves thepistons inward and exhausts the airthrough Port B. This causes the pistonracks to drive the pinion in a clockwisedirection, resulting in a quarter-turnrotation. This rotation is transferred tothe valve shaft, closing the valve.

Travel Adjustments

Within the mechanical connections of the drive between the valve and the MRP actuatorthere are several points of manufacturing tolerance, including valve disc or ball to stem, stem to adapter and adapter to actuator that must be compensated for in the operation ofthe assembly. Therefore, adjustment is necessary to ensure that valve operation is asprecise as required. With the MRP, Dual travel stops allow adjustment at both ends of thestroke. Maximum adjustment range of 82° to 98° rotation, including an over travel of +/-4°and an under travel of +/-4°.

The standard travel stops also providethe desired adjustment necessary forproper operation of various valve types,as detailed.

Resilient seated butterfly valves Shut-off occurs before the disc hasrotated a full 90° from the open position.Travel adjustment is therefore desirableto prevent over travel, which wouldresult in unnecessary operating torqueand premature deterioration of seat life.In the open position, adjustment isnecessary to ensure maximum flowthrough the valve and minimumdynamic forces acting on the disc.

High performance butterfly valvesThe double offset design of highperformance butterfly valves results inthe disc moving into the seat with acamming action. It is important that thedisc does not travel beyond the seatposition, otherwise damage to the seatwill occur.

Ball and Plug valves The ball or plug must be precisely in linewith the valve port to prevent damage tothe seat in the open position.Adjustment at the closed position isnecessary to ensure that complete shut-off is achieved. MRP actuators haveover travel adjustment of 4° +/- onedegree and under travel adjustment ofat least 4°, making them ideally suitedfor all quarter turn valve designs.

Torque Characteristics

Ball, butterfly and plug valves also vary in the characteristics of their torque curves.

Ball and Plug Valves: A ball valve, having seats loaded onto the ball, experiences alevel of ‘break out’ torque on opening, followed by a relatively low ‘run’ torque, beforean increase as the ball reaches the closed position. The torque curve for standard plugvalves tends to be similar to that of ball valves, but with a higher ‘run’ torque.

Butterfly Valves: A butterfly valve has a steeper torque decline and a lower ‘run’, dueto its lack of contact with the seat. The effect of flow, however, produces dynamictorque increase as the disc moves towards the open position.

Service Factors: The torque required to drive a valve varies markedly with applicationconditions. A quoted valve torque will normally assume frequent operation on a clean, lubricating fluid, at ambient temperature. If the valve is to be used infrequently, is on adry application, on fluid with particulate content, at high or low temperature or is to beused for emergency shut-down service, for example, correction factors must be addedto the valve torque requirements. The valve manufacturer should be consulted to verifythe extent of such correction factors.

For example: (Valve Sizing Torque x K-Factor = New Valve Sizing Torque)

Typical correction factorsFrequent use, lubricating clean fluid K = 1.0Infrequent use (less than once per month) K = 1.5Emergency shut down (once per year) K = 2.0Dry gas K = 1.25Paste, resin, slurry, etc K = 1.5Fluids with abrasive particles K = 2.0

Double Acting models produce aconstant level of torque outputthroughout the piston travel.

With Spring Return models, energy isused to compress the springs on the airstroke and the output torqueconsequently reduces throughout thetravel. Conversely, on the spring stroke, the energy of the spring diminishes astravel progresses, similarly reducing theoutput torque. When sizing actuators itis important to take into account the ‘endof air’ and ‘end of spring’ torques.

Sizing Actuators

Sizing

Actuators must be sized to have a torque output equal to, or greater than, the requiredvalve torque, taking into account unseating, run travel and reseating, where applicable.

1. Determine anticipated valve torque: To select the most appropriate actuator sizefor any given valve, it is necessary to determine the anticipated operating torque forthat valve. This should be obtained by consultation with the valve manufacturer andby taking account of the particular circumstances of the application, as noted above. The valve manufacturer will often include a safety margin in such data, so as toallow for inevitable variances encountered during manufacture.

2. Determine air supply pressure: Determine the minimum air supply pressure, which will be available at the installation. Using this, or the nearest supply pressureshown on previous page, select the actuator as follows.

3. Double acting models: Using the chart on page 5, select the actuator which willprovide the nearest torque output above the anticipated torque of the valve (+ safetyfactor).

4. Spring return models: Determine the desired ‘failure mode’, then determine thecritical torque points for the subject valve using table. Using the chart on page 5,select the actuator which will provide the nearest torque output (both ‘start’ and ‘end of spring’) above the anticipated valve torque (+ safety factor).

Valve Type Required Failure Mode Critical Torque Points

Butterfly Valve ‘Fail Closed’ Start of air torqueEnd of spring torque

‘Fail Open’ Start of spring torqueEnd of air torque

Ball Valves ‘Fail Closed’ End of air (full open) torqueEnd of spring (reseating) torque

‘Fail Open’ End of spring (open) torqueEnd of air (reseating) torque
