Introducing your public transport network

With new emerging communities and more people travelling around Moreton Bay, the region has experienced a great deal of growth. To ensure services meet the needs of a growing region, we have worked with you and our delivery partners to create a network that is

easier to use and reflects the current needs of the Moreton Bay community.

On 4 October 2016, the Redcliffe Peninsula line opened and the local bus network changed to meet the new train services.

Getting to know your new network

There are plenty of exciting changes and improvements to this new network. Some of the highlights include:

• the new Redcliffe Peninsula train line• frequent train services• connections between buses and

trains• services into new and growing areas• an easier-to-understand network and

timetables.

A new train lineOn 4 October 2016, the much anticipated Redcliffe Peninsula line opened. The new train timetable delivers:

• more than 650 train services a week• high frequency trains every

six to 12 minutes in morning and afternoon peak travel times

• trains running express between Northgate and Bowen Hills stations, every day, stopping only at Eagle Junction station (in both directions)

• departures every 30 minutes in off-peak and on weekends

• consistent 55 minute journey from Kippa-Ring to Brisbane Central stations.

The Redcliffe Peninsula line timetable will maximise the benefits for the greatest number of customers across the northern rail corridor and will allow Queensland Rail to service the Moreton Bay Region with its existing train fleet.

The timetable provides a pathway for future timetable improvements once 75 New Generation Rollingstock trains are rolled out across the network.

Express services for Caboolture and Sunshine Coast linesThe Caboolture, Sunshine Coast and Redcliffe Peninsula lines will share the existing rail track with services from Petrie to Brisbane Central. This has allowed us the great opportunity to review the timetables on the northern rail corridor.

TransLink and Queensland Rail last changed the Caboolture and Sunshine Coast timetables in 2011. Since then, we’ve listened to your feedback saying you wanted more express services and reduced journey times.

2 3

Page 5: Moreton Bay Region public transport network Bay Region public transport network Connecting you to your local community Your handy guide to your new Moreton Bay public transport network

The new timetables will:

• provide express services all day, every day, in both directions between Northgate and Bowen Hills, stopping only at Eagle Junction

• simplify stopping patterns• reduce travel times by up to

13 minutes• add two extra inbound, off-peak

services from the Sunshine Coast each weekday

• replace Nambour to Caboolture shuttle buses with complete Nambour to Brisbane Central services.

Bus connections to train servicesThe new bus network will deliver:

• 157 additional daily trips• better connections between bus and

train, with 17 bus services connecting to Redcliffe Peninsula line stations

• increased frequency during peak hours on six bus services

• increased operating hours on four bus services

• better access to high-frequency bus services across the community

• services into new and growing areas• an easier-to-understand network by

reducing route numbers.

Page 8: Moreton Bay Region public transport network Bay Region public transport network Connecting you to your local community Your handy guide to your new Moreton Bay public transport network

How did we arrive at this new network? On Wednesday 28 October 2015, the Deputy Premier and then Minister for Transport announced community consultation on the new train timetable and proposed bus network.

The new Redcliffe Peninsula line timetable was designed to provide:

• more than 650 new weekly train services

• trains every six to 12 minutes in peak travel times

• express services all day• a consistent 55 minute journey

between Kippa-Ring and Brisbane Central stations.

The new bus network was designed to:

• deliver an integrated public transport network

• provide better connections between buses and trains

• avoid bus and train services following the same routes

• create an easier-to-use network• provide services to new and

growing areas• provide services to key activity

centres• improve service reliability. We’ve analysed travel data for every changing bus route in the Moreton Bay Region, worked with our delivery

partners to understand what is happening on the ground and sought your feedback through community consultation.

Community consultation was undertaken between 2 November until 13 December 2015. Opportunities for the community to contribute involved:

• a dedicated page on the TransLink website

• an online survey• nine community consultation

drop-in sessions• customer liaison officers on the

network encouraging people to provide feedback online or by visiting a drop-in session

• flyers, signage and media releases.Approximately 3,300 responses were received across all channels over six weeks. We considered all feedback as part of the new network.

10 11

Page 9: Moreton Bay Region public transport network Bay Region public transport network Connecting you to your local community Your handy guide to your new Moreton Bay public transport network

We understand you might have a few questions about your new bus network and connecting trains, so we’ve listed some frequently asked questions below. If you have a different question, please feel free to call 13 12 30 anytime.

Why have you designed the bus network this way? When we plan a bus network, we take into account a lot of things, including population, community travel needs, opportunities for network connectivity, bus stop placement, accessibility, traffic conditions and budget to name a few.

We take all of these elements into consideration and within the known constraints, we try to find the best possible solution for our customers. In this particular instance, we were driven to design a network that met as many of the community’s needs as possible, while delivering Queensland Government priorities.

After detailed analysis of passenger feedback and travel data, we incorporated these findings into the new network by:

• strengthening services, increasing frequency and reliability through timetable changes

• removing mode duplication to improve the efficiency of the network• altering service timetables to provide connections to new train services• redesigning sections of services to maximise their ability to operate efficiently and reliably • extending the coverage of the network to provide improved services to emerging and developing areas of the community • providing more convenient opportunities for passengers to transfer between modes.

Any questions?

This new design responds to both community feedback and existing network issues to provide a sustainable bus network that will support new infrastructure and the growing transport needs of the community.

Where can I get a copy of my new bus timetable? You’ll be able to grab a copy:

• by visiting translink.com.au • on-board your bus • by visiting your local library or tourist

information centre• by calling 13 12 30 and getting one

sent out to you.

Will school buses be impacted?Although this review focused on urban services, there may be some changes to school services being made by operators separate to this review. Please contact your operator for further information.

Will there be changes to trains at my local train station? On Tuesday 4 October 2016, a new timetable will be introduced on the Caboolture and Sunshine Coast lines. For details, see pages 75 – 83 or visit translink.com.au.

New Redcliffe Peninsula line stationsThe once-in-a-generation project, the Redcliffe Peninsula Line opened on 4 October 2016.

This has transformed the region, delivering:

• 14km dual-track passenger rail line from Lawnton to Kippa-Ring

• six new stations at Kallangur, Murrumba Downs, Mango Hill, Mango Hill East, Rothwell and Kippa-Ring

• an upgrade to Petrie station• 2,850 car parks• stabling (including train crew

facilities) for 10 six-car trains near Kippa-Ring station

• Three metre wide concrete shared path for cyclists and pedestrians along the entire length of the corridor.

BenefitsThe Redcliffe Peninsula line will:

• provide more reliable, economical and faster alternative to driving to Brisbane City during peak periods

• help reduce congestion on the road network, including the Bruce Highway, and free up capacity for journeys that can’t be made using public transport

• provide sustainable and active transport options that reduce carbon emissions – every full train on the new line will take about 600 cars off the road

• provide better access to major employment centres both within and outside the Moreton Bay region

• help attract investment to the area and create business opportunities

• act as a facilitator for growth along the alignment, with stations becoming hubs of new development in the region.

Station accessibilityEach station has been specifically designed to meet accessibility needs, features include:

• ramp access to station platforms• anti-slip surfaces, tactile ground

surface indicators and hearing loops• crossfalls on the platform to prevent

wheeled equipment, such as prams and wheelchairs from rolling towards the platform edge

• dedicated vehicle parking for people with a disability located close to the station entrance.

Car parkingEach station has been designed to accommodate vehicle parking spaces based on the expected future patronage.
