Sussex County Opportunity Program in Education Anti-Bullying/Suicide

Prevention Macro Project

PREPARE: The Problem

Recent epidemic of adolescent suicides in Delaware

In a typical Delaware High School classroom of 30 students, four will seriously consider suicide and at least one will attempt suicide.

It is the tenth-leading cause of death among DE residents and the third-leading cause of death for those aged 15–24.

Lack of Education for adolescents about suicide- not understanding the permanence and trauma of the issue

Data Gathering

Researched the Delaware area regarding suicide, bullying and related topics

From 2001 to 2005 a total of 460 people died by suicide in Delaware, or approximately 92 every year.

That means seven to eight Delawareans took their own lives each month on average, equivalent to one suicide death approximately every four days

Annual adolescent suicide rates per population of 100,000 are double in Delaware (10.5) than the national average (4.5)

Specific Circumstance of the Problem

The Center for Disease Control has actually been sent into Delaware to conduct a investigation on the worrisome string of adolescent suicides.

In particular, Poly Tech High had four suicides that occurred from January-February

Suicides have been linked to bullying

Suicides have been linked to rejected LGBT teens

Data Gathering

Began with a bully survey:We asked the students how they felt about bully’s in their school then gave them a questionnaire to fill out about bullying behaviors
