Given the sparse, remote nature of many of Oklahoma’srural counties, high-bandwidth applications likevideoconferencing are an essential component todeveloping the state’s economy, enhancing public safetyefforts, and improving educational opportunities in tribaland economically distressed areas. The OklahomaDepartment of Libraries proposes to upgrade publiccomputer centers at 45 libraries in 44 counties across thestate, establish 36 library-based videoconferencingsystems, deploy 339 new workstations, and upgradebroadband connections for 42 sites. Participating librarieswere selected based on local poverty levels, broadbandpenetration in their service areas, and cost-effectiveness,among other factors. Total Award: $2,333,250
