Moraine Valley Concert Band MUS 175-176, 275-276 MU4 310-200 Audition Information Sheet – Fall 2019 All concert band members are asked to perform a brief playing audition to determine appropriate seating assignments. About the Audition Process: Auditions are a real and important part of any collegiate or professional music experience, learning to audition well is a skill that is as important to practice as your scales and rudiments. In addition, this audition will help determine an appropriate seating assignment for each player given their respective ability level. Please note that in order to help the band play at the highest level, those with the best auditions will not necessarily be placed on all first-chair parts. In order for the band to sound its best, strong players are need on all the band parts. Instrumentalist in sections where there is no one else but themselves on a part, are not required to audition. Note: All new members should plan on auditioning. Returning non-credit members who are uncomfortable with the audition may opt-out and be placed on a part at the discretion of the music director. All academic credit seeking students are expected to audition. Where and When? Fine and Performing Arts Center, room F-127, Thursday, August 29 during rehearsal. A sign-up sheet for time slots will be available during the first meeting and rehearsal on Thursday, August 22, 2019. Please bring your instrument to the first rehearsal and be prepared to play! Format of Audition? The audition will be one-on-one and evaluated by the ensemble director and/or an outside adjudicator. You should expect the audition to last approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Please see specific requirements for each instrumentalist below. Winds • Sight reading of a short excerpt from a published work for concert band (provided at audition) • Prepared etude (study piece) for your instrument – see selected etudes in accompanying pages below Percussion • Sight reading of a short snare drum and/or mallet excerpt from a published work for concert band (provided at audition) • A prepared etude on snare drum and mallets – see selected etudes in accompanying pages below Audition etudes for ALL instruments are provided below. This document is long, to save paper, it is recommended that you select and print only the pages you need for preparing for your audition.
