Moose Scoop Callao Moose Family Center March 2020 Governor’s Corner Greetings to all my Brothers & Sister's. Hello there, my brothers & sister’s. Sure has been a good winter so far, nice if it keeps up. I for one have enjoyed the mild temps. The legion sponsored steak dinner was a doozie. 93 steaks were sold & almost all were eaten in. The legion sponsored steak dinner was great. That's true but would never would have happened if it had not been for the many helpers. Set up, food prep, cooking, serving & the thing sometimes overlooked those that clean up. This was a truly great event, beginning to end. Thanks to each & everyone. Enjoined DJ turtle as well. Looking forward to getting the generator installation by the end of March. This one will handle the whole building. We're moving ahead, a bit at a time, but never fast enough it seems. Officers keep up the good job. Ballots are on the bar. Be sure to sign up & be a big part of the move ahead. I'll never forget to thank all the workers & volunteers that make it all work. THANK YOU EACH ONE AND ALL YOU ARE OUR BACKBONE EVENTS : March 1 st District 3 meeting Montross lodge 1 pm. March 4th Westmoreland Sheriff Balderson will be here with the K 9 to show his appreciation for the K 9 vest we donated. Come to meeting to see. March 7th there will be corn hole. Sign up at 5:00 pm. Greetings to all members and co-workers, Well it looks like we will be having a new year starting soon with new officers in place. I have enjoyed being Senior Regent this year and wish the next Senior Regent much success in the upcoming year. The WOTM Valentine's Day Basket drawing was a Hugh success, thanks to all who helped make it great. Considering the mishap, it turned out very well. The WOTM cook the dinners on the 1st Thursday of every month, please let me know if you would like to do a dinner on one of those nights. Any help is greatly appreciated. We are always looking for ways to raise money, so please let us know of any ideas you may have to help the WOTM, ALL IDEAS AND THOUGHTS ARE WELCOME. Please come and join us at the WOTM meetings held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays @ 7pm. We would love to see you there. Until next month……..Thank you so much, Cindy Headley Senior Regent Callao WOTM (804) 313-0968 (Text Preferred)

Interesting History They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot & then once a day it was taken & sold to the tannery. If you had to do this to survive you were "piss poor." But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn't even afford to buy a pot; they "didn't have a pot to piss in" & were the lowest of the low. The next time you are washing your hands & complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500s. Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and they still smelled pretty good by June. Since they were starting to smell, however, brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married. Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women, and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it . . . hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water!" Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof, resulting in the idiom, "It's raining cats and dogs." There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed, therefore, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence. The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt, leading folks to coin the phrase "dirt poor." The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping

Page 16 of 27 Downloaded from www.virginiamoose.org Posted: 2/28/2020

Page 17: Moose Scoop · Toyota Owners 400 Richmond Raceway MRN, 1 p.m. FOX 4/26 GEICO 500 Talladega Superspeedway MRN, 1 p.m. FOX Page 6 of 27 Downloaded from Posted: 2/28/2020. 5/3 Dover

outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entranceway, subsequently creating a "thresh hold." In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while, and thus the rhyme, "Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old." Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, "bring home the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and "chew the fat." Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous. Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the "upper crust." Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up, creating the custom of holding a wake. England is old and small, and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So, they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive, so they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift.) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, saved by the bell or was considered a dead ringer

For several years, a man had been having an affair with an Italian

woman. One night, she confided to him that she was pregnant.

Not wanting to ruin his reputation or his marriage, he paid her a large sum of

money if she would go back to Italy to secretly have the child.

Also, if she stayed in Italy to raise the child, he would provide child support

until the child turned 18.

She agreed but asked how he would know when the baby was born.

To keep it discrete, he told her to simply mail him a post card, and write

'Spaghetti' on the back when the child was born.

He would then arrange for the Child Support Payments to begin.

One day, about 8 months later, he came home to his confused wife.

'Honey,' she said, 'You received a very strange post card today.'

'Oh, just give it to me and I'll explain it later.' he said.

The wife obeyed and watched as her husband read the card, turned white, and

fainted.

On the card was written:

Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti.

Three with meatballs, two without.

The Tommy Moose® program aids in helping children overcome fears and anxiety during times of stress. Donated to Law Enforcement, Fire, and other Emergency workers, Tommy Moose plush dolls are presented to children in various traumatic situations. In addition to this service, the Tommy Moose character has grown to personify happiness, safety, and security through personal appearances, books, and on children's goods.

Tommy originated as a Moose community service project in Connecticut and soon spread throughout the US and Canada.

Since 2002, over 100,000 Tommy Moose plush dolls have been donated to shelters, hospitals, and emergency workers, who in turn deliver them to children in need of some comfort when facing some of life’s biggest challenges.
