The Parish LetterMy dear Friends,

"O Little Town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie! O Holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray."

Written by Phillips Brooks, the Bishop of Massachusetts, 1891 to 1893.When I shall sing this beautiful carol over Christmas, I shall think of the remarkable author of its words : Phillips Brooks. Phillips, (yes, a rather strange variation of Phillip as his Christian name,) was born in 1835 in Boston. From 1855, he was a teacher for two years, but he wasn't really able to cope with this, and he was sacked. At that time he thought of himself as a complete failure, and wrote in a diary - "I do not know what will become of me . . . I do not seem to come to much now." But, after a time, he entered Virginia Theological Seminary, and he was ordained deacon in 1859 and priest in 1860, in the American Episcopal Church. It is wonderful to think that through his influence, three of his five brothers, Frederick, Arthur and John were also to be ordained. In his early days, Phillips was involved much in preaching about the horror of the American Civil War, and he consistently opposed the evil of slavery. He had a significant platform for doing this in his position of Rector of Holy Trinity, Boston.Holy Trinity Church, Boston is regarded as one of the architectural masterpieces in the whole of the United States, and Phillips had a particular role in steering through its construction. It is a building that reflects the richness of good liturgy and its power to inspire and convert. The City of Boston in his time was a place of chaotic expansion and great social need and inequality, and Phillips was exhausted by ministry. Perhaps he dreamt of what might have been peace and stillness when he wrote: " How silently, how silently, the Wondrous Gift is given!" Perhaps he was moved by reflecting upon the contrast of the peace of Bethlehem with the noise and violence of Boston at that time. But through all the demands, Phillips was to write that his only ambition was to be a parish priest, but he thought that he was "not much of one".

In 1880, he was invited to visit Europe, and he preached in Westminster Abbey, and at Windsor before Queen Victoria. In 1886 he declined an invitation to be Bishop of Pennsylvania. Sunday by Sunday he preached to growing numbers in Holy Trinity Church, and he influence was increasing right across the mushrooming city. In 1891, he was again invited to be a bishop, and this time he accepted being consecrated as the Sixth Bishop of Massachusetts. It was a tragically short time in that office, since he died in 1893, after an episcopate of only fifteen months. He never married. His death was a major event in Boston. One observer wrote: "They buried him like a king. All barriers of denomination were broken down. Roman Catholics and Unitarians felt that a great man had fallen in Israel ".Various quotations are attributed to him, including "Do not pray for easy lives, pray to be stronger men" and "Be patient and understanding, since life is too short to be vengeful or malicious."I hope you have a wonderful Christmas, full of joy and peace, - and that at some moment you might reflect on the lovely words of "O little town of Bethlehem" and it's remarkable author, Phillips Brooks.

Simon.

Thank YouI would just like to say a very heartfelt ‘thank you’ to everyone for your cards and very generous gift as I begin my retirement. The money will be spent mainly on film, paper and chemicals for my darkroom in Cornwall and I shall think of you all whenever I am developing and printing my photographs. I am also grateful for all the messages and good wishes that I have received over the past months and for all the prayers that have been offered for my recovery, they really are very much appreciated. I would also like to pay tribute to and offer my thanks for the ministers, churchwardens and all others who have worked tirelessly to care for everyone in the benefice and keep the churches running during my illness. I know that all your efforts are equally appreciated by all who live here.As Lizzie and I begin the process of moving away, we wish you every blessing for the future and please be assured of our prayers as you prepare for a new chapter in the ministry of the Ashburton and Moorland Team. With all good wishes,David Sherwood.

Widecombe Fair Notice- Widecombe Fair, as well as celebrating rural life and investing for the future, hopefully makes a small surplus each year…depending on the weather.- The Mem & Arts of the limited company behind the Fair dictate that any surplus is donated to good causes in Devon. The 2017 financial result is close to being finalised and it is likely that there will be a small surplus again this year even after the Tax Man has taken his share. - There is usually one major beneficiary each year and some donations are made routinely, for example to the local Rotary Clubs and the Parish Link, but the Widecombe Fair Committee also welcomes applications for funding from other organisations – the Committee is already in receipt of a couple of these.- Generally, donations from the Fair are between £50 and £250 per organisation, though more can occasionally be donated.- Applications should be for a specific purpose, not just for ‘improving funds’ and should be submitted by email to the Company Secretary at [email protected] or in writing to the company registered address: Hannaford House, Poundsgate, Newton Abbot TQ13 7NX.- Applications must be received by 31st December 2017 such that they can be considered in January 2018. A decision on donations will be advised by 31st Jan 2018.

Merry Christmas

TurkeyIt was Christmas Eve in a supermarket and a woman was anxiously picking over the last few remaining turkeys in the hope of finding a large one. In desperation, she called over a shop assistant and said ‘Excuse me. Do these turkeys get any bigger?’ He patiently replied: ‘No, sorry, they’re all dead.’

St Raphael, Huccaby

Carol ServiceFinal reminder about the Carol Service on Friday 22rd December at 6pm. This will be a candlelit service together with light and heat from the wood burning stove. The Revd. Geoffrey Fenton will be leading the celebrations.Last year’s service attracted a wonderful crowd despite the dreadful weather, and we would love to see the Chapel full again this year. There will be mulled wine and home-made mince pies after the service and we hope that you and your friends and family will be able to join us in this wonderful start to the Christmas weekend. If you would like to do a reading, we are always looking for volunteers, so please let me know. (Churchwarden details at front of magazine).Thank youOver the last few months we have received several gifts in the form of cards created from watercolours painted by local people to be sold in aid of Chapel funds. More recently we received an offer of another watercolour of the Chapel, which we were pleased to accept. This painting was created by a lady who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, but who had lived in Huccaby as a child and had very happy memories of the area. Sadly, she died a couple of years ago and her husband wondered if we would like her painting to raise funds for the Chapel. We were also given an artist’s print of the picture, beautifully framed, to hang in the Chapel together with cards and envelopes to sell.We now have three paintings of the Chapel which we intend to auction next year as part of our 150th anniversary celebrations. More information will be put on our website www.straphaelshuccaby.org and in this magazine next year.ReflectionsAs we near the end of 2017 it is interesting to look back. Whilst it has been a challenging year for the Benefice in many ways, we have been very lucky at St Raphael’s.We have been well supported by Geoffrey and Marion Kaye our Lay Reader who have both worked very hard to encourage us all as well as performing all the more obvious duties such as weddings, funerals etc. Our Rural Dean, Revd. Simon Franklin has also ensured we have had cover for all our services – thank you to him and the Lay Readers who have come to St. Raphael’s.On a practical level, we now have our toilet; our Quinquenniel inspection did not find any major issues to be dealt with; numerous repairs have been carried out and most importantly, we have had such wonderful support from our visitors and members of the local community in helping to keep the Chapel open and well-maintained. Thank you to everyone!

If you would like to be a part of a hugely respected organisation, come along to one of our monthly meetings for a taster to see if WI is for you, you would be more than welcome. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm in the Church Hall on Tor Royal Lane, Princetown. It will cost you £1. You are welcome to attend two meetings as a taster. We are a fun group of mixed age range ladies and we do have a good laugh. Do come and see what we get up to.

Our meeting on Wednesday 1st November was a big success with almost all members turning up for what was a really a fascinating and fun evening. We were entertained and enlightened by Colin and Ann Tyrell of Horrbridge on the ‘private lives of hedgehogs’. These two amazing people take in injured or ill hedgehogs and nurse them back to health before releasing them back into the wild. One came along to the meeting but because it is really hibernation time for them, this dear little thing was resting on a hot water bottle covered in a blanket and placed underneath the heaters in the hall. So cute. Very worthwhile talk.

Our final meeting of the year is our own Christmas Party on 5th December at the training restaurant of Plymouth City College. Looking forward to it.

One last thing, please can I remind any State Pensioners who are reading this, that you only have until December 2nd to get your RSVPs in, either to the Post Office or by contacting Catherine Fildes on 01822 890293.

All that remains now is for me to wish you all a very happy Christmas on behalf of us all at High Moorland WI. Next meeting is not until February 2018 when we will be doing yoga with Una Miller of Postbridge.

If you would like any information on High Moorland Women’s Institute or details of the events listed above, please give me a call 01822 880395 or email [email protected].

Dartmoor Forest Parish Council– Extracts October 2017

Parish Clerk: Steve Cox. Telephone: 01822 258549 Email: [email protected]. Website: www.dartmoorforestpc.net

BT Payphones in Princetown the parish council has agreed to accept the offer of BT for the pay phone, installed by the Post Office, to be retained for at least two years then the decision, as to whether Princetown has a public phone box, will be reviewed again. Heartswell Mr. David Wells from Heartswell, a registered charity committed to supporting heart patients, their partners and carers across the West Country provided a background to the charity and its activities. Cllr. Gregg Manning presented Mr. Wells with a cheque for £500, as a donation from the parish council for its work, particularly the recent installation of a defibrillator in Vennville House, Princetown. Defibrillators the council agreed with the recommendation of South West Ambulance Service that the existing cabinets in Postbridge and Hexworthy should be kept unlocked to enable quick and easy access in the event of an emergency. It was agreed that a notice with the access code should be posted on the Hexworthy defibrillator. It was also agreed that Cllrs. Worth & Turnbull would disable the faulty locking mechanism on the Postbridge cabinet. Moorland Community Speed Watch Cllr. Gregg Manning reported that the it is being investigated whether the two Vehicle Activated Speed signs which had been severely vandalised could be repaired. Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT) Night Landing Site we are pleased to announce further generous donations to the appeal; West Devon Town & Parish fund have donated £1400, Tavistock Lions have donated £250, Princetown Charity Shop have donated £500 and the Mid Devon Cycling Club (organisers of the Dartmoor Classic cycling event) have donated £1295. In addition, Mr. John Druett, a Princetown resident has personally raised £140 and the Princetown Village Fair income is now £480. Therefore, the fundraising target for the installation and maintenance of the site has now been reached. A remarkable achievement for the communities of Dartmoor Forest and beyond to achieve in less than 6 months. Thank you to everyone concerned. The site drawings are being redrafted to complete the planning application. It is hoped that the site could be installed early in the New Year. Minutes of Parish Council Meetings. Widecombe Village Hall Steering Group (WVHSG) is now a formally constituted group carrying out a feasibility study into the viability of designing and building a new purpose-built village hall in Widecombe.

Regular updates will now be posted on our website and on parish noticeboards at Leusdon and Widecombe Halls. The community survey results have now been published and are very positive and

we have recently submitted a grant application form to Awards for All to enable us to get professional support in completing the feasibility study.

We are now inviting Parishioners and those local to the area to apply for annual membership (£5 individual / £10 family) in order to receive direct updates and an invitation to our AGM where members will have the right to vote. Application forms can be obtained from Widecombe Post Office, on our website or by emailing us using the address below.

If you would be interested in joining the Steering Group as a committee member please contact Yvette on 01364 631543 or using our email address below.

28% of respondents had directly hired the hall, for various private and public events with attendance between 10 and 100 people.

Existing use of other halls83% of respondents had used other village halls over the past 12 months at various frequencies, mainly less frequently than Church House.Views on Church House95% of respondents expressed a view on the adequacy of the existing hall. 1% said the existing hall is wholly adequate for all the needs of the parish, 29% felt the existing hall is mainly adequate, 51% said it is mainly inadequate and 13% felt it is wholly inadequate. 5% did not express a view.Asked whether they would support the idea of a new hall, 95% expressed an opinion. 51% strongly agreed, 38% mainly agreed, 3% mainly disagreed and 3% strongly disagreed. 5% declined to state a position.Facilities of a new hallVarious potential facilities were proposed. The questionnaire attempted to only focus on additional facilities, since certain fundamental items such as disabled access are legally required and would be a part of any new building. Nonetheless respondents typically restated these items since these are typical complaints about the existing hall. Of these additional facilities, extra catering facilities and facilities for larger groups were most popular. Investment in acoustics and additional meeting rooms were also highly rated.

Location of a new hallBoth Hayes Field (45% of respondents expressing an opinion chose this as favourite) and the Fair Field (42% of those respondents expressing an opinion) were similarly rated in terms of location, with the Parish Field (13% of respondents expressing an opinion) being rated much more lowly.

Other commentsA wide range of useful comments were made in addition.
