1. Cardiovascular: while brute strength has its place in surf training, you also need to be able to endure long periods of exertion. You don’t want to be exhausted after just a few minutes of paddling. Running is the most common way of increasing car-diovascular fitness; try varying terrains and altitudes to help you get the most out of your workout.

2. Core stability: the importance of core strength for virtually all physical activity gets more and more attention everyday, and it’s no different with surfing. Almost all of your time is spent resist-ing the force of the water, so it’s critical for your abs and back muscles to be in good shape. Crunches, abdominal presses, planks, and bridges are good surf-ing exercises in this area.

3. Upper body: you use your chest and shoulders quite a bit while surfing, especially when paddling and when popping up to ride a wave. The bench press is probably the most popular upper body exercise, but other useful ones are lat pulldowns, tri-cep pulldowns, curls, and even simple pushups.

4. Flexibility/mobility: one of the most overlooked ar-eas of fitness, and not just among surfers, is flexibility. Stretching will

make you more flexible and mobile, which will allow you to accomplish more on your board. You can do simple stretching exercises almost anywhere, and yoga is an option for a more structured activity. Pretty much every muscle can benefit from stretching,

including hamstrings, calves, pectorals, and the lower back.

5. Lower body/balance: strengthening your lower body will help you balance on your board and make more ad-vanced moves. Properly working out your legs also will help you avoid injury to your ankles and knees. Examples of lower body surfing ex-ercises are squats, lunges, hip abductions and adductions, and calf raises. If you’re not improving your body in each of these five areas, surfing can still be enjoy-able, but you’re selling yourself short. Don’t be afraid to spend more time in the water, ride more waves, and have more fun. Don’t let an-other surf season go to waste! To learn even more about the five types of surf-

ing exercises, including details on training schedules and specific drills, see this compre-hensive surf fitness program developed by a licensed sports fitness coach.Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Adam_Patterson

asterns felt a lot lon-

ger than it actually was this

year. When we first arrived

on Saturday the waves

were totally out of control. We watched a guy

jump in to paddle out and he was a quarter

mile down the beach in about 2 minutes flat,

no exaggeration. It was no surprise that the

competition was delayed until Tuesday. Sun-

day we met up with the ESA All Star coach,

Pat Emery, who drove us to a place called the

cove where we found gigantic A-frames that

were a little bit more organized with a current

that made you walk about a mile back once you got out. With the contest delayed until Tuesday no one had a problem with going back there again on Monday too. When the contest started on Tuesday it was still pretty heavy and the ESA switched to a two beach format and played around with the heat schedules to get some of the more experienced surfers in the water first. I think we counted over 10 broken boards on that day alone. As the week pro-

7am sharp and ran until 6pm and sometime’s longer. By the time the

younger divisions started, it was chest to shoulder high with occasional

head high sets rolling through. It was very humbling to watch as these

kids skyrocket in the air almost every heat and cool to see the parents

and friends that gathered to cheer these surfers like one big family. The

last day of the contest began with knee to thigh size waves and was a

challenging day for everyone in the water but to their credit the competi-

tors put on quite a display of skill and determination and did an incredible

job given the conditions .Our congratulations go out to all competitors and
