why try new fins?Future fins has been hard at work producing many different fins, for a wide va-riety of boards, for any kind of wave. We can’t stress enough how important it is to try these different fin styles to find whats right for your ability. If your a serious surfer looking to reach the highest level of performance, this is a necessary step to take in furthering your knowledge with surfing.Several Surf shops in NJ carry the Fin Tree System so take advantage of it. You simply walk in, leave your credit card, (so they have it on file just in case) and try any different fin style. It’s a no brainer -

A well designed fin does more then keep you from spinning out. The degree of foil - the curved cross section of the fin, along with the angle (how the fin tilts in relation to the bottom of the board), toe and other factors can add different dimensions to the feel of your board. The foils can create projection, torque, speed, maneuverability and release, and affect your board dramatically. Future Fins has created some of the most successful foils avail-able, with decades of experience and testing, along with pro riders input, and input from the average surfer going into every series.

Southeast

Regionals

Hundreds of competing surfers and their families gathered at Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine, FL, from April 16-18, to represent the 11 districts that comprise the ESA Southeast Region. As is the foundation of the ESA, many groups came together to make this year’ s event a success with the Christian Surfers Association on hand for logistical support and even providing breakfast for everyone each morning. The competitors andtheir families were even treated to a personal tour of St. Augustine’ s history by SAFL director Will Gresham himself, following the competitor’ s banquet on Saturday night at the Lightner Museum. Opening day on Saturday was fraught with a southwest wind that howled all day resulting in 1’ -3’ sideshore slop. The tricky winds, moving sandbars, and outgoing tide made conditions difficult, but there were waves and those that progressed through the opening rounds to the final rounds on Sunday and Monday were the best surfers of the day.The second day of completion saw the finals get underway in smaller but contestable surf. The northwest

Gathering Of The Southern Tribeswinds cleaned up the conditions, but drained the swell of its power, leaving the competitors to utilize their best competitive heat strategy to impress the 5-man panel of judges. The finals on Sunday, included Menehune Longboard, Junior Longboard, Womens Longboard, Ladies Longboard, Mens Longboard, Masters Longboard, Legends Longboard, Girls, Ladies, and Open Bodyboard. Central Florida (CFL) district and St. Augustine (SAFL) district accumulated a ton of points for their respective districts as the chatter amongst district directors increased to see which district would claim bragging rights as the most talent-rich district in the region.Day 3 started with a clean, offshore, smallscale groundswell but as the tide drained made conditions difficult. Moving from a beachbreak to a middle bar and finally to an outer bar that barely broke made conditions intriguing as the conditions changed from heat to heat. The good news is that after two days of doublebeaching heats, the competitors on Day 3 had the entire contest area to themselves. The heats of the day included the Junior Womens Final and the Open Final. And lastly on the Day 3 docket was the Tag Team Challenge, Daniel Glenn stole it in the dying seconds with the two best waves of the 40-minute, 4-man per team, 6-team challenge. SE Regionals finished with a birthday song to Chelsea Greasham, who was celebrating her birthday on Monday, and the ESA family is going to miss Burgess Autry as he retires his post as SE Regional Director. Stallwart that guy is! “It was great to bring my family here. I bring my 4-year old to as many contests as

I can and can’ t wait to get him into ESA. Also, big shout out to Lenny’ s surf shop! Thanks for the support!” Gigi Reiter, the only WFL participant at SE Regionals. “Always fun and a great win for me. I’ m having a contest in May to celebrate my Mom and I know it is going to be as much fun as I had here!” Haley Watson, Womens SE Regional Champ. “ It’ s been two weeks of a lot of heats, a few wins, but it is always nice to surf at home and sleep in my own bed. Now I gotta’ catch a plane to take down the Machado comp,” Open winner Keto Burns. “ The SE Region is stocked with veterans and newcomers to the All-Start team. He support they receive here is awesome and the successes they have make the team that much stronger,” Pat Emory, ESA All-Star coach. “ I was watching the heats before me and saw this sandbar working that no one was looking at. The heat started and I paddled right into my highest scoring wave. It was great! So happy about bring this huge first place trophy home!” Kayla Durden, Junior Womens winner.

Page 29: Moondoggie May2011

From being held at gun point as a boy while growing up in Cam-buri Beach, Brazil to paddling through a pack of tiger sharks in Costa Rica, profes-sional surfer Rodrigo Miranda has seen his fair share of scares throughout his life, but he only credits his survival to his most im-portant sponsor: his family.

Coming from a hard-working South Ameri-can family who went through tough fi-nancial times throughout his childhood, Rodrigo learned to appreciate even the smallest gifts at a very young age. He went from shaping his first board out of a piece of foam to having a quiver that in-cludes around 2,000 boards. Growing up in such a rough part of Brazil shaped his head-strong approach to escaping his home town. And he did it one wave at a time, contest after contest, sponsor after sponsor. Growing up in Victoria Island, Brazil, Ro-drigo came across some sketchy run-ins throughout his childhood to say the least. When he was 9 years old, Rodrigo’s dad gave him one of the sickest gifts a 9-year-old kid growing up in the ‘80s could ever want; a waterproof watch to wear while surfing. For the next two weeks Rodrigo proudly wore his fresh Casio (picture a retro G-Shock) to and from school, in and out of the water, 24/7, until one day while walking home from school with his back-pack, books and all, Rodrigo heard the sound “chi chi” that a gun makes when it’s being cocked. As he turned around, a mug-ger pressed the barrel of a .38 to Rodrigo’s forehead. Rodrigo suspected what he might want. “I’m thinking in my mind, f*ck he’s going to want my watch,” Rodrigo ad-mitted. Sure enough the mugger demand

ed the watch but not without a plea from the ballsy 9-year-old with the sick new watch. He pleaded “come on dude, my dad just gave this to me and you’re going to take it away!” The mugger began to pull back the trigger when finally Rodri-go handed over the watch and learned the hard way to “live to fight another day.” With the gun held to his back now, Rodrigo was told to walk through the crowded streets of his neighborhood and to not turn around or else he would be shot. Running home hysterically through the overcrowded, rugged and clammy streets, Rodrigo thought of how he would tell his dad. When it came down to it, he told him the straight truth “…I got a gun put to my head, he took my watch.” Rodrigo’s dad furiously got in his car to set out looking for the guy who ganked his son’s new watch that he had worked so hard for. “My dad was stopping any-one wearing a watch, grab their wrist and ask me ‘is this it?’” Rodrigo said. They never did find the mugger, but one thing is for sure; that must have been one sick watch.

That’s not the only danger Rodrigo has been in throughout his life though. Many years down the road he found himself in every surfer’s worst nightmare. While surfing at “little Fiji” in Costa Rica with a group of friends, Rodrigo paddled right into a group of 6 tiger sharks circling in the water. Paddling cautiously in the di-

Guns, Sharks and Baby FoodBy: Phil LeRoy

rection of the beach to try to avoid the sharks, the one thing he didn’t want to see happen, happened. They no-ticed him and submerged to where he couldn’t see them. The thought went through his mind. “Shit, these sharks are going to come from un-der and tear me apart!” He kept tell-ing himself “paddle, paddle, paddle, paddle,” as if he was trying to block out what was happening directly under him, when all of a sudden…he reached the beach. Tossing his board in the air in victory, he dropped to his knees and started kissing the sand yelling “OH MY GOD, Thank You!” Just another close call in the life of Rodrigo Miranda. As it goes for most surfers, a shark sighting didn’t keep him out of the ocean, just that particular spot for a little while. “Af-ter all, it’s the crocodiles you have to worry about in Costa more than the sharks,” Rodrigo said half-kidding.

Today, you’ll find Rodrigo Miranda living in both Port Orange, FLA or in Costa Rica with a fridge full of baby food for his children and a reminder from his wife to be safe. For the past 20 years he has also helped run a restaurant he and his dad opened in his home town of Brazil which provides affordable food for those struggling financially. “Coming from that same place where it’s always a struggle, I really like to give back to where I came from,” Rodrigo said. “Nothing’s ever been easy, but I have a beautiful wife who I fell in love with the first time I saw her, I have beautiful little ones, a beautiful fam-ily and a beautiful life now.” As long as Rodrigo is catching Bombs he can deal with anything that comes his way; whether it’s guns, sharks, or baby food. Aguadilla was home of the Ramey Air Force Base and its former base airport was converted into Rafael Hernandez Airport, considered one of the most active commercial airports on the island. Puerto Rico surfing first started in the 1950’s. Since then, it has grown in local popularity, and even gained international recognition after hosting the 1968 World Surfing Championships. The surf season in Puerto Rico stretches from late summer to early spring. Puerto Rico receives the majority of its swells during hurricane season as large storms move off the west coast of Africa, and during winter months as cold fronts and low-pressure systems move off the eastern seaboard of the United States, sending in long-period groundswell to the north- and northwest-facing beaches. Just recently, Kelly Slater won his 10th ASP World Championship title on, November 6th at Middles in Puerto Rico.

Professional surfer Jordy Smith, known for his big airs and radical maneuvers, was caught rubbing green “Flubber” on his board before landing a double backflip. “Flubber,” a rubber-like super-bouncy substance was discovered by Professor Philip Brainard and given to Jordy Smith as a birthday gift in 1997. When confronted about applying Flubber to his board, Jordy Smith confessed and described its effects as being “like BAM! WAPOWWWW!” Although Flubber was thought to be a myth outside of the Disney community, outbreaks of the substance’s abuse have surfaced in recent weeks, including noteables such as Blake Griffin, Robin Williams, and winner of Volcom’s kickflip challenge Zolton Torkos.

Flubber has the ability to energize anything it comes into contact with. Put some of it on a golf ball and it will bounce higher than the tree- tops. People with

Flubber-coated sneakers can jump so high that they’re almost flying. Wipe some on a surfboard and throw aerials like Jordy Smith. “…You know, I started using Flubber on sloppy, windblown, rampy days to make my sessions a little stronger and when I started landing Rodeo Flips and Supermans on the regs I just couldn’t, not use the Flubber,” Smith said. “It became a part of my life.”

The main Flubber refinery off the coast of Disney Land has been under strict scrutiny as of late. Spokesperson Walt Disney was unfrozen for a brief stint to qualm the controversy but did little to help the cause. “I love Mickey Mouse more than any woman I have ever known,” Walt Disney blurted out as a room full of confused journalists looked on. Before going back to his cryonic chamber full of liquid nitrogen Walt Disney was seen eating a gooey, green snack.

MDOG - How about some brief history on the shop, so let’s start at the beginning with the opening of Summer Sun.Danny - Well, I opened the store in... 1984. So it’s been 26 years now.MDOG - I was 1 years old!!! I had no idea you were open that long. (Danny’s laughing)Danny - Well you’ve been coming here since you were just around 11, 12 years old right?MDOG - Yup... that’s about right.... This was the only store I would look forward to when getting dragged to cape may on weekends. Obviously, I didn’t surf back then but was just start-ing out with skateboarding and I remember going to the mall when you were there at the time.Danny - Yes... the Carpenters Square Mall. When we origi-nally opened we started out with 2 cubicles, and they’re all the same size cubicles next to each other there. About 7 years later we had expanded to 5. In 1996 we moved the store here on Washington Street which was originally a jazz bar called The Shire. I remember when we would close the shop in Car-penters Square mall, we would come here for a beer every now and then and the music was excellent. They had a huge oval shaped bar which was pretty much right in the center of the shop here. Actually you can still see the trap door under the carpet where the bartender would run for a new bottle or whatever they needed at the time.MDog - You had some time to watch this town evolve over the years, so what was it like in the early 80’s compared to how it is now?Danny - Winters were dead. There was nobody other than locals around back then in the off season. To give you an ex-ample, at Carpenters Square we would open April 15th and be closed by October 15th. The population of visitors has grown tremendously. Cape May is now, more than ever a very desir-able location for tourist’s. The town has a lot of history behind it and over time people realized how beautiful the winter time can be here. In February, on a nice weekend tourist’s are here which helps a good percentage of business’s open. Now, I stay open year round, I don’t have to close down for the winter.MDog - Who are some of the companies you know and trust to consistently provide you with a quality product?Danny - Standing out in my mind... Quicksilver, Oakley, and Billabong, among others have all survived by focusing on de-livering a quality and desirable product to their consumers. Understanding the surf community is crucial, there’s a cer-tain mentality you have to relate to and without that relativ-ity how could you share the same passion. These companies

are owned and operated by surfers and they get it, they get what it’s all about. Companies that came in later like Hurley, Volcom, and Element have also done very well because of the motivation in doing what they know and love to do. The evolution of design with these brands over the years have been outstanding and helped increase popularity in the sport as well.MDOG - Obviously you have seen a rise in the surf com-munity and still growing.Danny - Absolutely! Surfing has become a very respected sport, and people outside the community recognize that. The amount of people who want to learn how to surf has grown, and now you see more and more women, and youthful surfers in the water. It wasn’t like that back then. This rise in popularity has been great for the local surf shops and made us a very lucrative business which kept us alive.MDOG - What do you think has played a major role with the increase of interest in the surfing industry?Danny - I think traveling helped. In the late 90’s and early 2000 there were a lot of people with expendable income. Massive amounts of people would travel to different places like Hawaii, and the Mexican coast which shed some light as to how many breaks there are out there with different sized waves. Traveling, along with the exercise involved, and also in my opinion the social activity you become a part of. It is a very personable community of people and those that don’t surf would never take this into consideration. Not to mention how fun it is. anytime you’re having a bad day and jump in the water, It truly changes your frame of mind.MDOG - Anything, within the way you conduct business change along the way?Danny - the internet has become a big factor in what I offer here in the store. The amount of product and availability on line I can’t come close to. I offer a clean display with com-panies that stay true to the small business owners by not offering sales through their own web sites. It shows they want us to be a part of the industry and I appreciate that, Keeps me in business.MDOG - Last wordsDanny - I really love the work I’m involved in. Every day is an adventure and doesn’t feel like work at all. People who come here on vacation are always happy which gives me a great feeling of accomplishment. Even the younger kids that come in are always respectful, and want to talk about surf-ing or skating and I’m always receptive because I can relate to their excitement. If you find a job you love to do, you will never work another day in your life -
