54,000 registered verified sites in 212 countries(many more are not registered)
Registered sites contain 41 million users,4.4 million courses and 1.1 million teachers
Over 1500 sites have more than 10,000 users

Many people want an LMS like this:
• A private, secure place• Replicate/enforce traditional roles• Students seen as needing to gain
competencies and knowledge• Content is structured and “fed”
to the students to be learned• Students are tested on
comprehension and retension via Quizzes

But an LMS can also be like this:• A focussed community of practitioners• Everyone is a teacher and learner• Connected activities that use different
strategies to gather data, reuse it, analyse it, practice skills and so on.
• Integration with the rest of the internet• Content is gathered/produced by
the students continuously • Assessment takes place continuously
in a number of ways (everything is assessable), by all participants
