Buildings and Grounds Drawings Collection

Accession 2009.004.01 5 CU. FT

Scope and Content Note This collection is a classic artificial collection composed of drawings generated by the

Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) or its contractors for building renovations, restorations projects, and garden and ground design projects including construction plans for roads and parking lots and planting plans for the grounds, especially gardens. Some of the drawings represent proposals for projects, but most are actually work plans for projects already completed. Researchers may find these drawings helpful in understanding the evolution of the property since 1961, when Commission took ownership of the property. This collection also contains two plat drawings showing the property owned by the Snowden family around 1800 and hand-drawn drawings of the Mansion by an architect around 1918. All of the drawings in this collection will offer researchers a window into the changes to the grounds and the buildings that have taking place over time at Montpelier Mansion Historic House Museum. Processing Notes:

Three people have worked on this collection, Rosemary Hose, Jessica Leventhal, and Karen Whitehair

Ms. Hose served as the first true Collections Manager at Montpelier Mansion. She attempted the initial organization, rehousing, and numbering scheme. Unfortunately, in practical application the system proved unworkable. [Please note: Some of the numbers from this original system can still be seen on the drawings even after attempted erasure.]

Ms. Leventhal served as a summer intern in 2007. She reorganized these materials so that they were grouped by purpose of drawing and type of drawing which helped make access easier. She also re-housed the materials properly according to this reorganization, and created a finding aid and folder listing. She also reviewed drawings found near the site manager’s desk and made a list of items she thought most appropriate to be included in the collection, but did not get a chance to incorporate them before her internship ended.

Ms. Whitehair served as the second Collections Manager at Montpelier and created this finding aid. Her work was to review and build upon what Ms. Leventhal started, accessioning the materials including assigning an accession number, incorporated the additional materials suggested by Ms. Leventhal, completed the rehousing effort, and created a formal finding aid.

The conditions of the material vary. Some are in good shape. Others are tattered and torn. The few drawings that were actually used by the contractor during the projects have plaster residue as well as contractor’s notes written in pencil. Please be sure to handle all items with care so that we can preserve them as a permanent record of the transformation of the buildings and grounds here at Montpelier Mansion.

Montpelier Mansion Buildings and Grounds Drawing Collection 2009.004.01 PLEASE NOTE: This collection is not finite and as new materials come in they will be incorporated into this collection with additional series being added. Series Description:

This collection has been divided into eleven series. These series are described below: Series I: 1983 RENOVATION PLANS

This series contains the drawings created by James Wollon and his crew for the 1983 renovation of the mansion.

Series II: KITCHEN AND RESIDENCE RENOVATION 1995

This series contains drawings showing the planning for the changes to the servant/caretaker wing of the mansion. These drawings show how the caretaker’s residence was transformed into office space as well as how the old kitchen was changed into the modern caterer’s kitchen. There are even notes from the Friends of Montpelier on one set of the drawings asking for clarification or for actual changes to the plans.

Series III: MOISTURE ABATEMENT

This series contains drawings showing the current drainage system of the house with some notation of earlier efforts to drain water away from the foundation. This series consists mostly of documentary information or proposals to address the moisture problem.

Series IV: MISCELLANEOUS ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS

This series contains hand-drawn drawings of the mansion with extensive notations. These drawings may be copies of those generated by Laurence Fowler for the 1918 renovation, but this is uncertain. It also contains line drawings denoting the basic structural features.

Series V: MISCELLANEOUS MECHANICAL DRAWINGS

This series contains drawings show the heating and cooling system currently found in the mansion.

Series VI: OUTBUILDINGS

This series contains architectural drawings of the Carriage House and a Historic Architectural Buildings Survey (HABS) drawing of the Summer House.

Series VII: GROUNDS DRAWINGS—GENERAL

This series contains drawings showing the evolution of the property from c. 1800 to today including topographical maps as well as drawings showing the plans for road and parking lot construction and a drawing of the plants found on the grounds.

The materials in this grouping include hand-drawn drawings as well as finished drawings created by software systems. It also includes related photographs showing significant architectural features and the students at work during their visit to Montpelier.
