A MESSAGE PRESIDENTFROMOUR

2 Bronco Express Fall 2015 MONTINI.ORG

“The growth of our programs and expanded facilities wouldnot be possible if it were not for the support and generosity ofthe members of our school community.”

Dear Alumni and Friends,

roughout our 50 years of providing a Lasallian education, one ofthe pillars of strength of our school has been the many talented anddedicated teachers and coaches who have “Touched the Hearts” ofour students throughout their educational careers. I have had theprivilege to meet and work with many of these individuals. In all my conversations with them, each saw their work, not as a job, but as a vocation.

In this issue of Bronco Express we feature Maryann O’Neill’s 30th anniversary as a teacher and administrator at Montini Catholic (page 6), as well as the appointment of Mr. Kevin Beirne as Assistant Principal of Student Services (page 7). Mr. Beirne is taking over forKathy Filipiak, who retired from that position at the end of the lastschool year but remains as a part time member of our faculty andstaff.

Maryann and Kathy exemplify what Montini Catholic is all aboutand why we are a great school. “Mrs. O” and “Miss Flip,” as studentsand alumni respectfully refer to them, have dedicated a great deal oftheir lives to serve our students and better our school community. From classroom instruction to coaching, moderating and administer-ing our school, both have always gone the extra mile to develop andlead programs that have advanced our Lasallian mission.

Mr. Beirne also brings to our school that same dedication and workethic. He is an outstanding teacher and administrator and was a keymember of our technology committee that developed and introducedour Digital Learning Program last fall. We are pleased to have Mr.Beirne join our school administrative team and are sure he will continue the fine work that Kathy provided.

During this 50th anniversary year, I have had the opportunity tospeak and meet with several former faculty members. Many of themwill be with us at our 50th Anniversary Celebration on June 4th atthe Drury Lane Oak Brook Terrace. All have expressed their pleasurewith the growth of our academic, extracurricular and spiritual programs and with the direction our school is going. Our growthwould not be possible if it were not for the support and generosity of the members of our school community. e financial support wereceive in the Annual Fund is critical in maintaining and growing our academic, spiritual and extracurricular programs that we provideour students.

is is the time of the school year that we reach out to every memberof our school community to request a gift to the Annual Fund. Somealumni have mentioned to me that they view a gift to the AnnualFund as a gift to “e Black Hole” of the school’s operating budget.

Gifts to the Annual Fund result in revenue to enhance the following:

• Equipment and staffing for academic and extracurricular programs

• Community Service Opportunities

• Financial Aid

• Professional Development for Faculty and Staff

• Technology

A gift to the Annual Fund, no matter the amount, truly makes a difference. It is the most important development program that wesponsor because every student benefits. Gifts can also be spread outover twelve months and can be restricted to a specific program.

During this 50th Anniversary school year I invite you to “Make aDifference” in our Lasallian Mission of Education by making a gift to the Annual Fund. For more information about the Annual Fundplease refer to pages 10 and 11 of this issue of Bronco Express or visitour website at montini.org.

As always, I am truly grateful to all the members of the MontiniCatholic school community for their continual support and generosity to our students, faculty and staff. It is sincerely appreciated. All my best to you and your loved ones for a wonderfuland family centered Christmas and a blessed and healthy 2016.

“May Jesus Live In Your Hearts…Forever “

is June, a passionate team from Montini’sCatholic community traveled to Granada,Nicaragua for a week long mission trip, thefirst of its kind in Montini's service history.Teacher, Mrs. Hilda Castor, and friend, Mrs.Catherine Pendergast, accompanied CampusMinister Michael Blanchette and five stu-dents on the trip. "We were very excitedabout bringing our services to our brothersand sisters outside of our own country," saidBlanchette, who organized the trip by part-nering with International Samaritan, anagency serving victims of severe poverty indeveloping countries.

Inspired by the parable of the good Samari-tan, International Samaritan works to allevi-ate hunger, homelessness, and endemicdisease across the world. According to Inter-national Samaritan, volunteers such as Mon-tini Catholic not only lend physical andeducational support to their missions, butmore importantly, they bring hope to thepeople served.

"is was an opportunity to make a differ-ence," said Blanchette. "One morning wevisited LaJoya Garbage dump community.is is where the single moms go each day, todig through garbage to get items they cansell." e team learned that the womenmake about $5-7 dollars per week. "emoms shared their stories with us, of hardwork, prayer and hope."

Montini volunteers were given the task of

building a home for a single mom, her eightchildren and one grandchild. "e mom andchildren would greet us every morning," saidBlanchette. "ey spent the day with us, andwould join in the work that we were doing."

"We all knew that the work we were doingwould have an impact on the lives of thesefamilies,” said Blanchette. “We didn't quitegrasp how powerful the experience would befor us all." Montini Catholic junior, HaleyHowarter, one of the volunteers travelingwith Blanchette, was also very humbled byher mission trip experience. "Each day whenwe went to the work site, it was seeing thesmiles on the kids faces was a motivation forme to give my all in the work we were doingto build the house."

Blanchette is proud to be helping Interna-tional Samaritan raise awareness in theUnited States about the living conditions ofthe poor in garbage dump communities inthe developing world. Blanchette and stu-dents will return to Nicaragua next summerto help build another house.

Montini’s Campus Ministry attempts to fundministry trips through various fundraisersthroughout the year. Students also pay alarge portion of the cost, with the schoolfunding chaperones. Friends wanting to helpour Campus Ministry students in their mis-sions may consider a donation to our AnnualFund (see page 10). Donations can be directed to community outreach.
