STUDENT CENTER SPOTLIGHT: “Be the ONE” Stand Up Week: Monticello Middle School had its an- nual Stand Up Week last week. The theme this year was, “Who will be the ONE?” Throughout the week, students were exposed to activities and discussions teaching the importance of being the one to stand up for resolving conflicts, showing empathy, having courage, confidence, kindness, and compas- sion. These are critical skills for our middle schoolers to support positive peer interactions. Last week students were involved in an interactive program with Climb Theatre designed to help build resili- ency when faced with stress or con- flicts in life. The MMS community was thrilled to welcome Climb Theatre, which is sponsored by the Peacemak- er’s Association. It is our hope that the Stand Up Week lessons have helped students understand the differ- ences in each other and aide in healthy coping skills essential in deal- ing with peer conflicts. MIDDLE SCHOOL REGISTRATION FORMS DUE ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21st

9th grade on line registration is scheduled for the morning of Thursday, February 22, at the Middle School.

FROM THE NURSE: We are in the cold and flu season, and need to take extra precautions to stay healthy.

If a student has a fever of over 100 degrees, they need to stay home until they have a normal tem-

perature for 24 hours without fever reducing medicine. This is to allow them time to recuperate as well

as not spread their illness to others. If parents want to send over the counter medication to the school for their child to

take, it must come in the original container. No medication will be given when sent in a baggie or an envelope. For

the safety of the students, the medication directions on the manufacturer’s label will be followed. If extra or increased

doses are requested, a doctor’s authorization must be obtained. Prescription medications also need to come in the

original pharmacy bottle. Most pharmacies will give you an extra bottle for school when requested.

Please call the health office at (763)-272-2120 with any questions or concerns.

Please also call the Middle School Attendance Line & leave a message 24/7 @ (763) 272-2110

We all want to have a safe and healthy 2018. Thank you, Monica Schwickerath, Licensed School Nurse

The MMS Math Team wrapped up their season

competing in their final meet January 16th in Elk River. Our Math Team took 1ST PLACE in this meet and also in the previous meet. Those wins helped earn the team a 2ND PLACE finish OVERALL in the division!!

8th grader Gavin Kucera also earned the MOST POINTS as an individual in the entire division. This is only the 2nd year MMS has had a Math Team back in action for quite some time. We are so proud of them!

Joshua Strand, Aiden Thornton, Larissa Forstie

On Friday, January 19, the Monticello Middle School conducted their annual Geography Bee. Students in grades 6-8 took a prelimi-

nary test at the beginning of January to qualify for the Bee, and from that the field was narrowed to 21 participants. Seventh grader, Aiden Thornton, finished the competition as the 2018 Bee Champion with 8th graders, Joshua Strand and Larissa Forstie, right on his heels. Aiden will now take the National Geography Bee qualifying test. The top 100 finishers in the state will advance to the state bee which will be held at SCSU later this spring where they will be competing for a $50,000 scholarship, a family vacation and entry into the National Ge-ography Bee in Washington DC!

From the MS Activities Director’s desk ~

Spring is right around the corner . . . well sort of, but in the Middle School activities office we are quickly

getting ready for the 2018 spring sports season. Through our fall and winter seasons, we have had a

total of 473 student-athletes compete in our middle school athletic programs.

In the spring, we offer a number of opportunities for 7th & 8th grade girls & boys. Girls can participate

in golf, softball or track. Boys can join baseball, golf, tennis or track.

All Middle School spring sports will start on Monday, April 2nd. Practices will be Monday - Thursday from approxi-

mately 2:45 - 4:30.

Practices:

Baseball and softball will practice at the fields at the high school. Student-athletes will ride their regularly-

assigned bus to the high school, change in the locker rooms, and then walk out to the fields.

Tennis and track practices will be on the tennis courts and the track at the middle school.

Golf will practice at Vintage Golf Course. Students will ride a ‘to-be identified’ bus that will drop them off at the

course.
