COVERAGE
The Coverage of Survey report has been extended to thirty one new units viz twenty
nine units of Wheat Milling & two units of Paper & Paper Board industries. Now this
report covers 1742 industrial units pertaining to Large- Scale Industries, which
contribute about 72% of the total Value Added of Large-Scale Manufacturing Sector in
the Punjab.
INDUSTRIAL
PRODUCTION
INDEX
Industrial Production Index for the month of April 2013 stood at 126.4 against
159.1 and 111.3 as compared to March 2013 and April 2012 respectively. Index
Series since July, 2006 is given as under:-
The production was lower in case of Dairy Products (7.0%), Sugar (90.6%), Starch & its
Products (12.6%), Jute Textile (8.9%), Plywood (12.8%), Paper & Paper Board (7.9%),
Pharmaceuticals (27.3%), Soap (12.5%), Synthetic Fibre (5.1%), Cement (9.4%), Steel
Bars/Angles (5.7%) and Air-Conditioners (12.9%).
The production was higher in case of Soft Drinks (41.0%), Cotton Cloth (11.7%),
Woollen Textiles (5.0%), Leather Tanning (9.5%), Footwear (30.0%), Fertilizers
(21.6%), Fabricated Metal Products (8.7), Tractors (23.1%), Diesel Engines (25.0%),
Electric Fans (27.8%), Electric Meters (122.5%) and Refrigerators/Deep Freezers (7.2%).

The production was lower in case of Cigarettes (8.2%), Woollen Textiles (11.9%), Basic
Inorganic Chemical/Acids (26.9%), Soap (18.7%), Steel Bars/Angles (19.0%), Fabricated
Metal Products (34.1%), Tractors (28.9%), Bicycles (20.7%) and Electric Meters (25.6%).

Overall production during the month of April 2013 was 20.5% lower than March
2013. The cause of lower production is the ending of sugarcane crushing season.

Overall production during April 2013 was 13.5% higher than April 2012. Higher
production can be attributed to the higher production of refined sugar during the
reference herewith.

Higher production was observed in case of Dairy Products (56.5%), Wheat Milling
(12.0%), Sugar (174.6%), Soft Drinks (7.5%), Cotton Cloth (19.4%), Jute Textiles
(63.6%), Leather Tanning (26.9%), Footwear (22.9%), Paper & Paper Board (7.5%),
Pharmaceuticals (7.2%), Paints & Varnishes (36.8%), Synthetic Fibre (14.6%),
Petroleum Products (89.0%), Glass Sheets (21.3%), Automobile Cars/Truks
(171.4%), Diesel Engines (400.0%), Motor Cycles (22.8%), Electric Fans (5.8%),
Electric Motors (20.8%), Air Conditioners (60.9%), Refrigerators/Deep Freezers
(20.0%) and Agricultural Implements (15.9%).

Overall production during July – April (2012-2013) was 5.4% higher than July–
April (2011-2012).
The production was lower in case of Cotton Yarn (22.8%), Leather Tanning (13.2%),
Basic Inorganic Chemicals/Acids (5.8%), Fertilizers (20.2%), Soap (7.2%),
Petroleum Products (88.0%), Glass Sheets (39.7%), Steel Bars/Angles (6.8%),
Fabricated Metal Products (17.1%), Diesel Engines (34.3%), Bicycles (6.1%) and
Electric Meters (8.9%).
Higher production was observed in case of Veg. Ghee/Cooking Oil (7.2%), Dairy
Products (5.4%), Wheat Milling (20.4%), Sugar (21.9%), Starch & its Products
(10.3%), Soft Drinks (13.3%), Cigarettes (7.4%), Jute Textiles (18.0%), Plywood
(20.0%), Paper & Paper Board (18.2%), Pharmaceuticals (26.9%), Paints &
Varnishes (8.8%), Tyres & Tubes (6.5%), Tractors (50.7%), Automobiles Cars/Truks
(104.7%), Motor Cycles (23.5%), Air-Conditioners (8.0%) and Refrigerators/Deep
Freezers (6.5%).

Report for the month of April 2013
COVERAGE
This report covers 285 Textiles Mills, out of this 247 units are spinning, 24 are weaving
and 14 are composite, where as 2 composite, 55 spinning and 8 weaving mills remained
closed during the month.

MANUFACTURING ACTIVITY APRIL- 2013
a) PRODUCTION, CONSUMPTION AND STOCK OF COTTON BALES
The mills purchased 525394 Bales of Cotton during the month, which is 12.7%
lower than March 2013. These mills consumed 707013 of Cotton Bales to manufacture Yarn
that is 0.1% lower than the last month. The stock of Cotton Bales at the end of the month was
2550030 Bales.
b) PRODUCTION, CONSUMPTION AND SALE OF COTTON YARN
The production of Cotton Yarn during the month was 78162 (‘000’) Kgs. which was 3.9%
higher than March 2013. The mills consumed 10688 (‘000’) Kgs. of Cotton Yarn to manufacture
Cotton Cloth during the month 79325 (‘000’) Kgs. of Cotton Yarn was sold by the mills during the
month, which is 5.4% higher than the last month. The Export of Cotton Yarn during the month was
20750 (’000’) Kgs. which is 9.8% lower than the last month.
c) PRODUCTION AND SALE OF COTTON CLOTH
The production of Cotton Cloth during the month was 30549 (‘000’) Mtrs. which is 4.3%
higher than the last month. 33812(‘000’) Mtrs. of Cotton Cloth was sold 16901 (’000’) Mtrs. of
Cotton Cloth was exported by the mills, which is 12.8% higher than the last month.
PRODUCTION OF MAN MADE/BLENDED YARN AND MAN MADE/BLENDED CLOTH
The production of Man Made/Blended Yarn was 38862 (‘000’) Kgs which is 0.4% higher
than the last month. The production of Man Made/Blended Cloth was 6669 (‘000’) Mtrs. which is
2.3% higher than the last month.
EMPLOYMENT AND WAGES/SALARIES
Total employment during the month was 172874. Out of this total employment, 146775
were production workers. Total wages/salaries for the month amounted to 1502.2 Million Rupees.

COVERAGE This report covers Twenty Seven Woollen Textile Mills of the Punjab
PRODUCTION The Woollen Textile Mills Produced 64 thousand Kgs. of Woollen Yarn, 163
thousand Kgs. of Knitting Wool and 46 thousand Mtrs. of Woollen & Worsted Cloth during
the month. The production of Woollen Yarn was 6.7% higher than the last month where as
Knitting Wool and Worsted Cloth was 1.2% and 17.9% higher than the last month
respectively.
EMPLOYMENT Total employment in the mills under report was 1645 that was same as the last
month. Out of this total employment, 1395 were production workers.

COVERAGE
This report covers Fifty Four Vegetable Ghee/Cooking Oil Mills of the Punjab Province:-
PURCHASE, CONSUMPTION AND STOCK OF EDIBLE OIL
The mills purchased 14996 Metric Tons of local Oil, 39819 metric tons of
imported Palm Oil and produced 3319 metric tons of other oil during the month. The mills
consumed 58429 Metric Tons Oil for the production of Vegetable Ghee/Cooking Oil during
the month, which is 1.0% higher than the last month. The stock of Oil and Vegetable Ghee
at the end of the month was 30316 Metric Tons.
PRODUCTION, SALE AND STOCK OF VEGETABLE GHEE/COOKING OIL
The Production of Vegetable Ghee/Cooking Oil during the month was 57179
Metric Tons including 9583 Metric Tons of Cooking Oil which was 0.4% higher than the
last month. The sale of Vegetable Ghee/Cooking Oil during the month was 57808 Metric
Tons, which is 2.2% higher than the last month. The stock of Vegetable Ghee at the end of
the month was 7766 Metric Tons.
EMPLOYMENT AND WAGES/SALARIES
Total employment in the Vegetable Ghee/Cooking Oil mills during the month was
3818 that is 0.1% higher than the last month. Out of this total employment, 2631 were
production workers. Total wages/salaries for the month of April, 2013 was 40.7 Million
Rupees.

PRODUCTION The production of Cigarettes during the month was 3673 Million Nos.
which was 3.0% lower than last month.
SALE AND STOCK Sale of Cigarettes during the month was 3962 Million Nos. which was
10.4% higher than last month.
Total employment in these factories during the month was 913, which
was 0.5% lower than the last month. Out of this total employment, 812 were
production workers. Total wages/salaries for the month were amounted to Rs. 31.7
Millions.

Cement. CEMENT The cement factories produced 1516412 M. Tons of Cement
during the month, which was 9.4% lower than the last month. EMPLOYMENT Total employment in the factories as reported was 6441, 0.3% lower
than the last month. Out of this total employment, 4580 were production workers.
Total wages/salaries for the month under report were 274.8 Million Rupees.

PERFORMANCE OF FERTILIZER INDUSTRY IN THE PUNJAB Report for the month of April 2013
COVERAGE This report covers Six fertilizer factories. These factories produced 252340
Metric Tons of Urea and 2025 Metric Tons of Super Phosphate where-as the production
of Amm. Nitrate and Nitro Phosphate was Nil during the month. The overall production
of fertilizer during the month was 21.6% higher than the last month respectively.
PRODUCTION OF UREA July 2011 to April 2013
SALE AND STOCK These fertilizer factories reported a sale of 197314 Metric Tons of Urea, 870
Metric Tons of Super phosphate. The stock of Urea, Super Phosphate, Amm. Nitrate
and Nitro Phosphate at the end of the month was 92331, 49988, 58 and 0 Metric
Tons respectively.
EMPLOYMENT AND
WAGES/SALARIES
Total employment during the month was 4831 which is 1.7% lower than the
last month. Out of this total employment 3194 were production workers. Total
Wages/Salaries bill for the month under report was amounted to 368.0 Million
Rupees.

PRODUCTION Overall production of the above 40 Pharmaceutical factories during the month was
0.5% lower and 25.0% higher than March, 2013 and April 2012 respectively.
These factories produced 210678 thousand Nos. of Tablets, 2249 thousand Ltrs., of
Liquids/syrups, 16745 thousand Nos. of Capsules, 10802 thousand Nos. of Injections, 20411
K.gs of Ointments and 4 Thousand Ltrs. of Glanicals (Tinctures/Spirits etc.). The production
of Liquids and Ointments was 2.8% and 22.7% higher whereas the production of Tablets,
Capsules and Injections was 3.2%, 10.5 and 4.2% lower than the last month respectively.
EMPLOYMENT Total employment in these factories during the month was 7572 which is 0.4% higher
than the last month. Out of this total employment 3354 were production workers. Total
wages/salaries during the month was133.9 Million Rupees.
