The prices of Manganese ore have been increasing in the past

month. Due to such increase in the global prices, MOIL increased

the prices of Manganese ore in the domestic market. The prices of

Manganese ore having Mn-44% and above were increased by 7.5%

and the grades lower than 44% were increased by around 10%

MOM. The prices for Silico Manganese grades were increased by

15% and the fines were increased by around 10% MoM.

MOIL revised the prices of different grades of Manganese ore for

the first quarter of CY20. Prices of Manganese Ore has been

rebounding for the past few weeks. This can largely be attributed to

the Manganese ore supplies from South Africa and Gabon

decreased as the small miners shut down their mines when the

prices hit below USD 4/dmtu. Manganese ores availability is an

issue from Zambia and Brazil due to rainy season there and this has

created a cascading effect and a Manganese Ore shortage in the

domestic market was experienced which in line pulled the

Manganese ore prices for the first quarter.

OresState-owned, MSTC-Karnataka, conducted the e-auction on 18

Jan’2020. The auction received an overwhelming response, as the

entire quantity of Manganese ore was booked in the auction. Total

25,704MT quantity of Manganese Ore was offered in Jan’2020

auctions. This month, the ores from Sandur Manganese & Iron Ore

(SMIORE) Mines were put under the hammer.

Manganese Ore imports increased by about 7% in Dec'19 M-o-M in

line with the shortage of materials. South African carbonate ores were

the most imported ore with 67% of total imports. South Africa and

Australia remained the top two exporters for Manganese Ore to India

with 67% and 22% shares in the total imports. Meanwhile, the imports

in CY19 remained stable on Y-o-Y basis.

Manganese Ore production increased by 19% M-o-M in Dec’19. MOIL

accounted for 50% of the total production in Dec’19 with 142,000MT

production. Meanwhile, MOIL contributed to 46% of the total

Manganese ore production by India in CY19. SMIORE and TATA Steel

remained the two largest miners after MOIL with 11% shares each in

the total production in CY19. MOIL increased its production

significantly by 8% M-o-M. Meanwhile, the sales by MOIL increased

by 48% in Dec’19, as compared to the previous month.

State-Owned, Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) conducted the

e-auction on 27th Jan’2020. The auction received an

overwhelming response, as almost the entire quantity was

booked at approximately 36% higher than the set base price. The

quantity of Chrome Ore offered was significantly lower in the

past two months from OMC.

Odisha contributes almost entirely towards chrome ore

production in India. Chrome Ore Production in Dec’19 was noted

to be 415,150 MT. TATA steel remained the largest miner in

Dec'19 with 36% of the total production, and the production was

up by 7% M-o-M. Meanwhile, production levels were

significantly up for OMC, IMFA and other major miners as well.

Indian Chrome ore imports increased by 16% in Dec'19 as compared to

previous month. South Africa and Oman remained the two largest

exporters of Chrome Ore for India with 89% and 11% share in the total

imports. Imports increased on M-o-M significantly; meanwhile, imports

in CY19 remained stable as compared to previous year.

Indian Silico Manganese Prices increased in line with supply crisis in

the market in the initial weeks. Meanwhile, due to increased prices

of Silico Manganese many Ferro Chrome Smelters shifted to Silico

Manganese and the existing Silico Manganese producers started to

work with full capacity, however, this created a situation of

oversupply and the prices came down marginally.

Indian HC Silico Manganese Exports decreased in Dec'19 by 2% M-o-

M from 53,892MT in Nov'19 to 52,816MT in Dec'19. Meanwhile,

Exports in CY’19 decreased by 11% as compared to previous year.

UAE, Japan, and Malaysia remained the top three countries to import

Indian HC Silico Manganese with 16%, 14%, and 9% shares in the total

exports in CY19 respectively. UAE decreased its imports of Indian HC

Silico Manganese in DEc’19 by 20% M-o-M basis. Bangladesh also

decreased their imports of Indian HC Silico Manganese in DEc’19 by

13% respectively as compared to the previous month. However, Japan

and Malaysia increased their imports from India in the month of

Dec’19 as compared to Nov’19 by 14% and 57% respectively.

the Ferro Manganese producers converted into LC/MC Ferro

Manganese and Silico Manganese as the imports hampered the

domestic market. In the intervening time, this also created a

shortage of supply in the domestic market.

Indian HC Ferro Manganese Exports increased by 46% in Dec’19 as

compared to the previous month. Meanwhile, the exports in the

period CY19 were stable as compared to the previous year. UAE,

South Korea and Canada remained the top three importers of Indian

HC Ferro Manganese with 33%, 21% and 8% share in total exports

respectively.

PricesIndian Ferro Chrome prices increased amid reduced production.

Most of the producers reduced their production levels due to the

down-trending Ferro Chrome market. Moreover, a few producers

also shifted to Manganese alloys production due to the sudden hike

in the Silico Manganese prices. However, with such a shift, the

quantity of Ferro Chrome that was coming into the market was

reduced. Therefore, the pressure on the Ferro Chrome prices was

reduced for short term in January and then the prices remained

stable for the remaining weeks.

Indian Ferro Chrome Exports reduced by 30% in Dec’19 as

compared to previous month. China, South Korea, and Japan

remained the major importers of Ferro Chrome from India. Chinese

Imports increased by 63% M-o-M. China Japan and South Korea

were the three major importers with 41%, 20% and 18% of the total

imports of Ferro Chrome from India in Dec’18. Meanwhile, exports

for Japan hiked by 91% in Nov'19 M-o-M.

PricesThe Indian Ferro Silicon market was facing severe shortage of

material as most of the producers are overbooked and are unable to

deliver until February. On the other hand, Producers were also

witnessing a good number of inquiries from the export market but

they had no material to cater to the demand. Producers in the

Northeast of India are still worried about the tight supply of raw

material for producing Ferro Silicon. In addition to this, Charcoal

supply from Southern part of India was also tepid during Jan’2020.

Indian Ferro Silicon imports increased considerably by 189% from

16,937MT in Nov'19 to 49,010MT in Dec’19. Bhutan was the

largest exporter of Ferro Silicon for India. Indian imports from

FERRO ALLOYS

. Karnataka Auctions received overwhelming response and the total

percentage

Chrome Ore auctions received overwhelming response as, as almost

the entire quantity was booked at approximately 36.53% higher than

the base price.

MOIL increased the prices of different grades of Manganese Ore for Q4

(Jan-Mar) FY19, by approximately 2.5-7.5% on the prices prevailing as

on 01.01.2020.

Major Highlights

Mining lesses with chromite leases will not be allowed to

participate at national e-auctions conducted by the Odisha Mining

Corporation (OMC). The State Cabinet has taken this decision to

ensure fair price discovery of chromite ore, a scarce resource.

Vedanta Limited will acquire management control and as per

approved Resolution Plan, it will hold 100% of the paid-up capital

of FACOR.

Due to CoronaVirus outbreak in China, Ferro Silicon producers

remain stressed about procuring carbon materials.
