—CHAMPIONS 1951-1952— While searching through the many club papers and information that I have accumulated through the years and the many papers that various members have given me, I came across a group of papers given to me by Ted Kereczmann. (I am trying to clean out my

office and it seems almost impossible.) Naturally I took the time to go through them and found many interesting things, some of which I did not know. For example: On Sunday September 7, 1952 at our club hall at 2nd and Norris Streets a Victory Banquet in honor of our Soccer Champions of the Philadelphia League, 3rd Division, was held. The team naturally belonged to the German Hungarian Sport Club and their manag-ers were: John Piatka and John Weber. The mem-bers of the team were:

John Jacoby, Captain

The toastmaster for the evening was Frank Follmer and the Banquet Committee consisted of chairman John Jacoby, secretary Joan Wilwert and treasurer Steve Aughenbaugh. There was a small program featuring singers and magic tricks. Mike Stumpf and his orchestra provided the music for the evening. These men would now be about 80 years of age. Some we know have passed such as John Jacoby, Michael Betsch, Stefan Kempf, John Blank and Nick Hummel. Others I personally have not heard from or seen in years. They are Tibor Danko, John Giel, Freddie Scheliga, Frank Betsch, and John Gutekunst. Some of these I know are still alive but never come around to our club. However, Mat Noel’s son Michael and his wife Kathi are very involved in our club, and Mat comes around once in a while and recently attended the EPSA Anniversary Banquet with our club. —PICTURE OF THE MONTH— German Hungarians Participated in the

German-American Steuben Parade

Thank you to all our members, friends, and neighbors that marched with us and

celebrated our heritage at the parade this year! We can’t wait to again in 2016

Did you see the great flyer with all the girls in “dirndls’ advertising our Oktoberfest? They are (top row) Michelle Galgon Avrich, Marlene Fricker, Janet Malofiy, Mikaela Malofiy, Connie Reiter, Kristen Reiter, Kari-na Fricker, Lisa Fricker, Susi Hartmann, with Kyra Malofiy, Genevieve Avrich, Nichole Deely, and Emma Walter on the bottom row. GREAT PHOTO!!! Congratulations to Jocelyn Galgon and Chris Pinney who recently became engaged and were feted with a great party given by the future bride’s parents, Fred and Susan Galgon at their home. It was exciting to hear that Eddie Galgon got engaged to girlfriend Jodi Crouthamel. Congratulations and best wishes to them both! Great to see Peter and Kathi Piskei at the club recently, both at the Schnitzel Night and at the Oktoberfest. Peter had been very ill recently and is doing much better and looked fine and we were happy to see him and his

friends the Hotzes and the Gehlerts. Good to see all three families! Mikaela Malofiy and Michelle Paul, members of our Cultural Group and our Soc-cer Program recently traveled to New York City to attend the Parade given in honor of the USA Women’s First Place Champion Team. They had a great time and besides making some new friends, they unexpectedly ran into some Schuhplattler friends. Among those who traveled to the Philly on September 26th and/or September 27th, for Pope Francis’ visit was Marlene Fricker who traveled with a co-worker and Joe Reiter who traveled with his family. Joey Reiter, a member of our Schuhplattler Group is a student at St. Joseph University and was a volunteer for the event. I’m sure he has some interesting stories. Don’t forget to attend our Traditional Ger-man Hungarian Kirchweihfest on Saturday evening, November 14th. See you all there!

—SOCCER SHORTS— The Under—11 Girls, Strikers won a tough one this weekend. Already missing two play-ers to injury and sickness, the girls lost Carley ten minutes into the game after she suffered a broken arm while throwing her body on front of a shot. The girls quickly went down 2:0, but gathered themselves and put 5 on the other team to comeback and win the game 5:2. Shay had her first hat trick for the Strikers who are holding second place in PAGS with a 3-0-1 record. Best wishes to Carley on a speedy recovery! The home match schedules for all our youth teams is available and up to date at the soccer website. You can access that in-formation at www.ughsoccer.com. For those savvy with social media, you can follow what our youth teams are doing throughout the year with the hashtag #GHYouth on facebook.com and twitter. As always any team, player or fan can sub-mit news about youth soccer at the German Hungarians to the Publicity & Editorial Com-mittee through Robin Callahan. You can con-tact her via email at [email protected] or phone at 267.401.9949. We can’t wait to hear from you!
