Kirchweihfest is the most beautiful fest of the year. Members and friends of all ages look forward to this event. It takes a lot of preparation to make the second Saturday in November so wonderful. Three generations of German Hungarians spent three weeks arranging all the details for the big picture of this day. Excitement ran through our veins and fingertips as we put the finishing touches on the always festive centerpieces, an apple with a rosmarein branch inside. We practiced the Kirchweih stickle and pulled the littlest children through! The band set up their music stands with the signature red logo of “Die Heimat Klänge” upon them! When the day finally arrived, the hall was set, the dancers prepared, and the German Hungarians ready for the even-ing to come. We buttoned our vests, tied our aprons and smoothed our handmade tracht before, with smiling faces, greeted our friends from many different clubs near and far. Soon we were on the dance floor for the first polka of the night! Something that makes this event so spe-cial is seeing families of multiple genera-tions taking part together. Kirchweih is not only an event where I can catch up with my friends, but it is an event where my family is present. I can look around the hall in any direction and see smiling, loving faces. My brothers might be spending time at the bar

or laughing in conversation with cousins and friends. My grandparents could be en-joying their time with old friends, and my parents dancing their favorite waltz sung by my uncle. It is so special to me to be able to wear a shawl that my Grandmother made especially for me. It is important to me that this gets passed down to further genera-tions someday. As members of the cultural group, we appreciate when outsiders embrace our traditions. It is special to see the children’s group performing and getting excited to dress in their German Hungarian vests and shawls. We performed a dance with the little children as well as the older dancers. The dances performed were “Come Let Us Be Joyful”, “Siebenshritt, Ida Polka, Veilchen Blaue Augen, Sauerlaender Quad-rille, Dra Di Um, and Lambuerger Almtanz. —PICTURES OF THE MONTH— Our Youth Soccer Program, Members &

Friends in the News!

Adam and Tara Mellor were wed in Octo-ber and had their wedding reception at our club. Adam is the grandson of Adam and the late Helen Herbert. Adam Herbert is well known at our club as a former Chairman and member of our Board of Governors. He attends all events whenever possible and both he and his wife enjoyed being members at our club. The groom Adam Mellor, along with his sister, Larissa, was a member of our Cultural Group as a young boy. Rumor has it that the reception was wonderful and all had a great time. Congratulations Adam and Tara!!! Our deepest sympathy to Lilly Birett and her family on the death of her husband Wal-demar. Both Lilly and Waldemar immigrated to the USA, met here and married and be-came the proud parents of two sons. They became members of the Bayerischer Volks-fest Verein and both became active in that organization, Waldemar served in various positions especially as treasurer for a num-ber of years while Lilly was active in the La-dies Auxiliary. Waldemar became sick in 2014 and died on August 22, 2015. When the BVV moved to our club, the Biretts attended most of BVV dances and also the U.G.H. dances. This friendly gentleman will be sorely missed by both clubs. Johnny Blank recently visited from Vail, Colorado. He was able to visit our club a few times while here. We are always glad to see him and wish him well in his future in Colora-do. We wish a happy belated sixtieth birthday to our past president, Bill Galgon. He outdid us all by having two celebrations, one in a

little Italian Restaurant in Philadelphia with all his entire family, about 30 people, and one at his home with his friends with a lot of people. Great job, Marlene! We wish him many years of happiness. Our deepest sympathy to Susan Hartmann on the recent death of her aunt, Marie Merkl. Marie and her late husband Frank were formerly active members in our Ger-man Hungarian Sport Club, performing vari-ous ethnic dances with their friends. Marie was the sister of Susan’s father, Walter Schutz, who is a former president of the GH Sport Club. Our condolences to all. Recently heard from Anna Kempf, wife of Florian about some of the 1951-1952 Third Division Championship team members which we wrote about in our last newsletter. John, (Mooney) Giel is unfortunately deceased. Tibor Danko is living in Florida and usually visits each year spending some time with his former team mates. They didn’t see him this year! Frank Betsch is living in Fox Chase but doesn’t come around too much. Johnny Gu-tekunst still has a busy barber shop on Street Road in Bensalem. Nothing is known about Fred Scheliga, John Bohn and Michael Mathes. Frank Merschbach moved to the Poconos and his wife recently stated on Fa-cebook that she enjoys reading the Progress on the internet and that her husband used to play for our club. Enjoyed the update on these former members. Would love to hear from any old-timers, men or women, formerly involved with soccer or with cultural activities. Call Emily at 267-470-4828

—SOCCER SHORTS— Matthew Proll is a current member of the Cultural Group and a former youth soccer player. The young mem-ber has a history of fundraising since the age of 8 when he began rais-ing money for equip-

ment needed for his team. Last winter, Matt left his team, the Tornados. Upon leaving the team, he used his snow shoveling money and presented the team with a gift, a much needed sideline bench. The team was grate-ful and sad to see him go. He continues, however, to fund raise for the youth soccer program. He has made red and black brace-lets, which he sells, donating the profits to the soccer program. His latest fundraising effort came to fruition as a successful event the Penalty Kick Shootout that was held on November 20. Members and friends of all ages from our club, and surrounding clubs, came to participate. He even received sup-port from the Philadelphia Union for the event, who came to the event and set up a futsal ring for the kids to enjoy. The event was a huge success, brought many people out on a brisk Fall evening, and raised some funds for the soccer program. Matt isn’t done yet, and is already planning a cross bar challenge when the fields thaw out in early Spring, stay tuned for details. The club would like to say THANK YOU to Matt Proll. Your hard work and efforts to support the youth soccer program are greatly appreciated. It is important that we note the top three winners of the Penalty Kick Shootout. Con-gratulations to Danny Galgon, Brendan “Charles” Callahan, and Michelle Paul who placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively! Each win-ner was awarded a warm scarf with the club shield and their place on it as well. The Under-11 Girls, Strikers had a great fall season. They finished 2nd place in PAGS league play with a 7-1-1 record, two points behind first place. The girls capped off the season with a championship at the Hemp-field Adidas Fall Classic. They went undefeat-ed winning all three games in Division 1A, beating teams from PA East, Maryland and West Virginia and grinding out a hard-fought 2:1 win in the final. Congratulations to the Strikers! Well done, girls! The Under-13 Girls, Panthers took first place in the Schillinger Tournament recently. We are proud of their success and congratu-late them on it!

—CLUB & BAR HOURS— The Bar Chairman recently reported the follow-ing hours of operation for the club and the bar:

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday - 7:00-11:00pm

Sunday— 12:00 noon - 8:00pm

—PENNY PARTY— We would like to thank all for a job well done on Wednesday night, November 18th. Everyone on our Penny Party team does a great job with their roles and their tasks as well as jumping in and assisting whenever help is needed. The event was not only suc-cessful in the way we pulled it off, but finan-cially as well. Let’s work hard to get the same number of people (over 250 attended) to the spring 2016 Penny Party, so we can be successful in the future. Again thanks for all your help and please thank the kids for running the prizes. In the past, we were requested to have food available and in the spring we began selling hoagies, chips and a drink. This has been very successful as we had 50 sandwich-es on hand and sold all of them. Not only thanks to our workers but to all who attend-ed.

—CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS — With the German Hungarians

I had planned to open this piece with something to the effect of “If you are reading This paper you are most likely a member of our club…” Then I sat and realized, I do not know how many people read this publica-tion, and of that unknown number I do not know how many are members or friends of the German Hungarians. On December 20 “The Club” will be doing something that it has been doing for many years. This date our hall should be full as all of our members should be in attendance at Our Club Christmas Party! This party is not “the Children’s Christmas Party” and it is not “the Dance Group’s Christmas Party”. This is not “the Cultural Group’s Christmas Party”. This event is Our Club Christmas Party! It’s a party for all our members, their families, and their friends. The main point is if you are reading this, you are involved with the club regardless of membership and if you are involved with the club, the club wants to see you at the Christ-mas Party! Celebrate Christmas with Friends and with your German Hungarian Family.
